Weight

14 kilos (it was 14.3 kilos at the doc’s on Feb 1st)

Height

About 91 cm

Teeth

19 teeth, or almost there… Right now, she has 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 incisors bottom jaw;  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw;  4 pramolars and 4 more back pramolars are making their appearance slowly but surely.

Developmental Milestones

  • Can go to sleep on her own at times, but still wakes up at night crying sometimes.  She’ll only want Mommy then.  These few nights she has also been screaming a lot at night.  Hopefully it’s just a phase and will end soon.
  • Her favorite position to fall asleep in is with my hand under her body and the other hugging her.  She won’t hesitate to ask “I want someone to hug me”, or she’ll even instruct me to “Sleep straight, Mommy” and then she will position my hands :P
  • Loves going to school and will proudly tell us all her friends’ names and also that she knows her brothers’ friends’ names.  She’ll also tell us what she did in school, and what she ate in school.  And she’ll boast that she’s a “big girl”.

Toilet Training

Toilet training has seen a vast improvement in the recent weeks.  She wears pull-ups when she is in school, which makes her feel like a “big girl”.  And now she will tell us when she needs to go pee pee.  When we are out, she’ll tell me, “Mommy, I need to go pee pee.  I’m wearing pull-ups so I can go.  I can hold, Mommy.”

I’ve told her that if she can keep her pull-ups dry, I’ll let her wear panties :)

Food and Feeding

Very adventurous in her food, and will try almost anything, as long as it’s not *spicy* :P

They won’t let me call them “Baby” anymore, but I still do..sometimes.

bigday1

Today both Ethan and Hannah got ready to go to school.  Ethan is in Kindergarten 2 this year and Hannah is starting off in Playgroup level.  They had both been looking forward to this day for months, and Ethan had been planning with his sister on how she should wait for him after dismissal, how he would hold her hand and take her to her class, etc.  The night before, Ethan was too excited to fall asleep, and I believe he only slept at around midnight.

It was a miracle we managed to get ready and left the house at about 8:15a.m. this morning.

bigday2

Then again, miracles happen when kids cooperate, wouldn’t you agree?

bigday3

So anyway, we arrived in school and we found out the kids’ new class names.  Ethan very independently walked up the stairs to his new K2 class and started playing with his friends again.

As for Hannah, since it is her first time in school, there is an orientation program that lasts till the end of next week, where the parent is allowed to accompany the child in class to sort of ease the process of being in school, away from the parent.  This is a very important step to alleviate separation anxiety where possible, and during this period, Hannah’s class will only run for 2 hours a day.

Well, she seemed okay today, and was willing to sit on her own listening to stories and doing her art and crafts.  She was also very happy and enjoyed herself while playing in the playground.  Of course, it certainly helped that she had already been going to this same school for her once-a-week parent-toddler class the previous year and her teacher was the same one she had.

Lunch, consisting of meesuah soup, was served at about 11:30a.m., and Hannah readily finished the entire bowl.  Afterward she even had a few slices of apples.

bigday4-1

bigday4-2

After her class had dismissed, we waited a few minutes for Ethan’s class to end and went for lunch.

In the late afternoon, Hannah fell asleep and took a very LONG afternoon nap.  Must have been tired from all that running around in school!

bigday5

Another day beckons tomorrow! :D

Weight

13.5 kilos or maybe more!

Height

Actually she was previously about 89cm or 90cm , but I recently took her height measurement, and it was around 91cm.

  • We can carry a decent conversation with Hannah now, and she is a joy to talk to.  She is very inquisitive in nature and asks a LOT of questions, including follow-up ones.

Hannah: Mommy, what are you eating?
Me: Oh, I’m eating tomyam noodles.
Hannah: Is it spicy?  Can I try?
Me: It’s a little bit spicy, Hannah.
Hannah: A little bit spicy?
Me: Yes
Hannah: Why only a little bit, Mommy? Why not a LOT?

  • She wants to be treated like a big girl most of the time now, and that has resulted in her rejecting the baby chair or high chair.  ”I don’t need the baby chair now, I’m a big girl!”.  And when taking her to the potty when we’re in the mall, “I can hold my poopoo Mommy, I’m a big girl now.”
  • Will ask for permission to do most things. “Mommy, can I drink some chocolate milk, please?” “Mommy, can I watch TV please?”
  • Can reason within means.  One recent episode stays in my mind (and will stay there for a long long time).  I was getting the kids to sleep and they both wanted to sleep together on the mattress on the floor.  I was afraid they would kick each other accidentally, so I asked Hannah to let Ethan sleep on his own.  And she replied, “I don’t hit my brother, Mommy…I LOVE my brother.” Awwwww…
  • Has an emerging fashion sense (and still learning).  She knows now that dresses go with Mary Janes and shorts go with sandals.  But occasionally, you’ll still see her in red socks and Mary Janes with a floral frock! :P
  • Tries her best to show her independence by feeding herself or dressing up, and when we try to assist her, she’ll protest and say, “No no, I CAN!!!”

Toilet Training

Toilet training for peepee still in progress.  She can more or less tell us when she needs to poopoo and successfully does it in the toilet.

Food and Feeding

Still very much a food lover and is not choosy when it comes to food.  Sometimes does not want the chicken pieces though, but still loving her fish balls and carrots.

Weight

13.5 kilos

Height

92cm (she has grown!!)

Teeth

I just noticed that her 4 back pramolars have begun to emerge.  So she’s going to get 19 teeth soon.  Right now, she has 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 incisors bottom jaw;  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw;  4 pramolars and 4 more back pramolars are making their appearance slowly but surely.  This would explain the bout of “nightmarish screamings”.

Developmental Milestones

  • Hannah is learning very quickly, judging by the amount of questions she asks all the time.  She asks Why, Who, What, Where, How endlessly and is fast becoming a chatterbox.  She is always fighting for “talk time” with her brother.
  • She takes pride in her achievements, however big or small they are.  If she discovers a particular pose (e.g. stand on one leg while lifting both hands up), she would do it and proudly and loudly proclaim, “See, I can do this!”
  • Hannah is showing a certain degree of shyness with people she is not familiar with or people whom she chooses to be shy with.  If she doesn’t want to verbally say hi, she would be contented just to wave.
  • Stubbornness is beginning to show and she has exhibited instances where she adamantly wants to get her own way.
  • Loves (jigsaw) puzzles and can occupy herself doing it.
  • Loves to point out little girls who “look like her” in videos she watches.  She’ll ask us, “Which one is like me, Mommy?”
  • Curious and inquisitive.  When I take her around, she’ll almost always ask, “Where are we going now, Mommy?” or “Where are we going first, Mommy?”, followed by “Then?” :)

Toilet Training

Very keen on peepeeing and poopooing in the toilet, even when we are not at home.  I need to get her those trainers soon so that she can utilize them properly when we are outside.

As soon as we come home from anywhere at all, she has a habit of going to the toilet and putting her kiddy toilet seat on the toilet bowl, and then she will carry the step stool by herself next to the toilet bowl and climb on it by herself.

Food and Feeding

Still very much a food lover and is not choosy when it comes to food.

Ethan and Hannah have been sharing our bedroom space ever since they came into our lives.

Ethan, who started from the crib, and moved to the cot and then to our bed and then to the mattress on the floor, had been indicating that he is all ready to move out to his own room, on the condition that the bedsheet is a Cars bedsheet.  You see, he currently has a Cars bedsheet, but it’s on a single mattress.  We figured it’s time we moved our little big man to his own room with his own bed, and currently our only available option is our 2nd bedroom which has a queen-sized bed.  So we had to get a Cars Queen-sized bedsheet set.

Hannah, on the other hand, has been wanting to sleep on her brother’s single mattress for the longest time, and has requested for a Barney bedsheet.

Coincidentally, we finally found the Cars bedsheet (in Queen size) last weekend, so we got it for Ethan and he was very excited when I washed it clean and laid it out on the bed for him.  He happily said goodbye to our room and moved to his new room with his new bedsheet.

The plan was for Ethan to sleep in the other room and for Hannah to move to the single mattress in our room, as a form of gradual transition.  But what we hadn’t expected was when Hannah requested to sleep on the single mattress in Ethan’s room too.  She wanted to be with her brother, apparently.

bedroom

That’s not all.

She asked me to LEAVE the room and said that she could sleep by herself.

On the first night, I sat at the foot of her mattress till she fell asleep.  On the second night, she asked me to leave the room.  On the third night, she wanted to lie down with me.   But now most of the nights, she can fall asleep on her own.

I was still a little apprehensive if she would be able to sleep on her own, so since Ethan and Hannah moved out, we have left both the room doors open, and on almost every night, Hannah has either wandered back into our bed in our room, or she has cried and I’ve carried her into our bed.

I say “almost every night” because last night was the very FIRST night that she slept through in the room with Ethan.  I woke up in the early hours of the morning and discovered that she wasn’t by my side.  When I checked on her, she was fast asleep, albeit she had rotated 180º!! :)

That’s a HUGE improvement and we are so proud of both Ethan and Hannah for making this transition.  Shows that they are growing up in leaps and bounds…

…but why does our room feel kinda empty now? :(

Weight

13.5 kilos

Height

88cm

Teeth

Still 15 teeth: 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 incisors bottom jaw.  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw.  4 pramolars.  4 more back pramolars have not made their appearance.

Developmental Milestones

  • Hannah’s scribblings and drawings are sometimes taking shape.  She would come and show me what she has drawn: sometimes it is a flower, sometimes a tree, sometimes an animal.  Oh, she loves animals!
  • Likes to help me around the house.  For example, “Mommy, come, I help you keep the vacuum cleaner!”
  • Hannah imitates what we do really really well.  The other day, she watched me make cake pops and then later that evening, she was “serving” me Lego cake pops, all with different flavors!
  • Still wants to do almost everything by herself: buckling up her seat belt, putting on her clothes.
  • Loves to read and to be read to.
  • Can participate in church by singing the “Alleluia!” together with her brother. :)
  • Hannah is still sometimes a little shy around strangers but when we start walking away from them, she’ll immediately ask, “Mommy, who is THAT?”

Toilet Training

Toilet/potty training is still ongoing.  Hannah has shown a really keen interest on going to pee in the toilet and sometimes she would tell me she wants to pee.  Her chart is filling up relatively fast and she has since obtained two rewards (of which I will share in a separate post).

I’m happy to note that poopoo accidents are becoming lesser now, and I was very pleased that she was even able to tell me on one occasion that she had the “poopoo feeling” when she had diarrhea.

Next step: I will be introducing training pants for her soon!  Yay!!

Food and Feeding

Very adventurous when it comes to food, Hannah will ask to “Let me try” whatever we are eating.  She even enjoyed the kiam chye boey I cooked the other day.  She loves dragon fruit now and will eat so fast, we have to hurry up and eat some too, lest we don’t have any left for ourselves.

getwell1

What do you think Ethan’s doing?

He asked me for a piece of recycled paper, pencil and color pencils and he said he wanted to write a note.  This is what it said:

getwell2

This evening, Hannah had a small accident in Queensbay Mall.  She tried to climb up the escalator as it was riding up and somehow tripped and grazed her shin.  Although Daddy was holding her hand, the cut was rather deep and there was slight bleeding.

Ethan was very worried about his sister and kept asking, “Is Hannah okay?” …and when Daddy cleaned up her wound at home, and Hannah didn’t cry much, Ethan commented that Hannah was so brave.

That was when he asked me for some paper to write her a note.

Ain’t he the best brother ever? :)

Still 15 teeth: 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 incisors bottom jaw.  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw.  4 pramolars.  4 more back pramolars have not made their appearance.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can walk up and down the stairs by herself.  When she goes up the stairs, she sometimes alternates her feet as she climbs up.
  • Sometimes she can put on her pants and shoes by herself.
  • Hannah can draw a (rough) circle and a straight line; she loves to experiment and scribble with color pencils.

Communication and Social Skills

  • She is talking really well for her age, and expresses herself clearly.  ”I don’t like that smell, Mommy!” or “Who’s that?” or “I wanna go to sleep!” or “Help me to wash my hands, Mommy!”
  • She is showing a keen interest in playing with other kids, but sometimes is not willing to share yet.
  • She can wash and dry her hands on her own.
  • Loves to brush her teeth on her own, but I will also follow up by brushing for her too.
  • She is obsessed with colors and numbers and keeps on asking me what color is this and that and where is this and that number.
  • She’s learning some new shapes this month!  For example, she has learnt the hexagon and trapezoid :)
  • She can sing a lot of songs and sometimes will insist on singing them on her own.  The rate at which she picks up new songs amazes me!

Toilet Training

  • I’ve started a simple chart to record her potty training progress.  There are still some accidents but we’re getting there..

Food and Feeding

  • Hannah is showing a keen interest on wanton mee now.  She loves eating it and even devours the wantons with glee.
  • Drinks fresh milk and UHT chocolate and strawberry milk.
  • Loves jelly and all types of fruits.

Weight

13.1 kilos, from a recent weighing-in in Ipoh.

Height

86cm, also from that same session in Ipoh.

Teeth

Still 15 teeth: 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 incisors bottom jaw.  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw.  4 pramolars.  4 more back pramolars have not made their appearance.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can balance on one foot, with the other foot placed across the thigh of the standing foot…something like the Yoga Tree Pose.
  • She can turn the door knob open by herself (on tiptoe).  She can only open the door from outside-in though.
  • Wants to put on her clothes and shoes by herself.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah can recognize the basic shapes and some of the secondary shapes now.  When we draw the shapes out, she will say “square”, “triangle”, “rectangle”, “circle”, “star”, “heart”, “oval” and even “diamond”.
  • She can identify most of the basic colors now, and will also sometimes ask what we get when we mix two colors together.  Her favorite color changes from day to day depending on her mood and what she wears.
  • Hannah can identify which is left and which is right.
  • She can also differentiate between a boy and a girl.  She can say that she is a girl and Ethan is a boy, and even for the people she has met, like relatives, she can correctly distinguish the gender.
  • She’s getting more and more interested in playing with other kids, and frequently names some of her friends in her parent-toddler class.  She is quite the sociable one, this one.
  • Loves scribbling and drawing things with color pencils.  It helps to harness her imagination and build her creativity.  She’ll even ask me to take a picture of her with the picture when it’s done.

Toilet Training

  • Thought she was about to be toilet-trained for poopoo, but lately Hannah has been having frequent accidents.  I might start a sticker chart soon.

Food and Feeding

  • As of sometime near the end of July 2011, Hannah has been 100% weaned from the breast.  She now drinks fresh milk and UHT milk, and also has her dairy intake from cheese and yogurt.
  • In addition to chocolate milk, she has begun to show an interest for strawberry milk too :)

hannah-mommy

My personal breastfeeding goal in terms of duration is 2 years.  I don’t see it as a chore to breastfeed, on the contrary, I find that breastfeeding is less troublesome compared to bottle and formula feeding.  In addition, since Ethan had been breastfed for 2 years, it goes without saying that Hannah should also be breastfed for roughly that same duration.

That was my plan, I told myself, unless she weaned herself off.

When Hannah was approximately one month shy of her 2nd birthday, I decided to try to wean her off her daytime breastfeeding sessions.  I didn’t want to use Bonjela because I had heard that it contained a substance that was not safe for kids (there was no report of this danger back when I weaned Ethan off).  So I decide to go natural this time round and used bitter gourd.

I started by slicing the bitter gourd up and manually squeezing the juice out, then I used it to apply on my nipples.  Nope, didn’t work.  Not potent enough.

So I then chopped up the bitter gourd and added a little bit of boiled water, and then I puréed it in the blender.  With that one medium bowl of bitter gourd purée, I applied it to my nipples immediately before breastfeeding Hannah.  She immediately rejected it.  I did this for 2-3 days in a row, and after that Hannah was completely weaned off the breast during the daytime!  I hadn’t expected this method to work so fast, but it did!

Sometimes she would instinctively come for a feed and then it was as if she suddenly remembered and then she would back off and make a face, saying, “Not nice anymore, Mommy?”

I didn’t suffer any breast engorgement nor blocked ducts because I didn’t really have any milk left anyway.

However, even though Hannah had been weaned off the breast during the day, she would cuddle up to me as soon as I had taken my night shower and asked to be breastfed.  And she would need that comfort suckle to fall asleep.

This was the hard part.

I knew I could simply use the bitter gourd purée to wean her off completely then, but something in me wasn’t quite ready yet.  Sometimes I would tell her that Mommy didn’t have much milk left, and that she was a big girl now and she would reply, “Can drink from cup?”, and I would say, “Yes Hannah…”.  But the comfort suckling still went on.  And I admit that I did nothing drastic to stop that.

And then some time in July of this year, Hannah fell sick with high fever and cough.  The first night she was on medication, she fell asleep out of tiredness without the need for comfort suckling.  She still got up at night and asked for milk though.  On the second night, I told her to try to sleep without breastfeeding because I was afraid she might throw up.  She quietly obeyed.

Then on the third night when she got better, she smiled and looked at me, “Mommy, have milk?” So I gave in.:P

hannah-mommy2

But I knew then that she was ready to be completely weaned off.  So following that, I told her that there was really no more milk left, and that all her friends drank milk from the cup and not from the breast.  She whined a little, but she listened and obeyed and eventually fell asleep in my arms.  No screaming or crying.  And she did not even wake up at night for milk.

Again, I did not see it coming and I had not expected it to happen so fast!  God really did answer my prayers again, and I am truly grateful that the weaning process happened rather smoothly.  It has been close to three weeks now that Hannah has been completely weaned from the breast, and I last breastfed her on Saturday July 23 2011.

Hannah still loves to cuddle close to me, and I suppose there is a close bond in terms of smell.  She still needs me to sleep beside her when she falls asleep, but she has achieved a grand milestone in independence.  Her dairy intake now consists of any kind of milk products: fresh milk, UHT milk, cheese, yogurt, etc.

With that, I know that I have successfully completed my second labor of love in 2 years and 4 months.  I have given her my best and I am so grateful to have this experience to carry with me through my life.  Breastfeeding is the most wonderful and rewarding journey any mother can take with their child, and I am so blessed to have been able to go through it not once, but twice over, cherishing every step and moment of it, and establishing a bond so strong with my kids that nothing can shatter.

** The first picture at the top of this post was candidly taken by Ethan :) **

lego-magination1

Hannah adores playing with Lego blocks and lately she is also using those blocks as a form of pretend play.  It’s interesting to see what these kids can create and she never fails to amaze me with her creative imagination.

Hannah has a tendency to collect and fix Lego blocks in a certain color hue, and she will hoard all the blocks of that color hue, refusing to let anyone touch it.

Hannah calls these her “chocolates”.  All the Legos which are flat and thin are “chocolates”.

lego-magination2

This is a “birthday cake” (notice it is a GREEN one made with Legos in hues of Green), with RED candles.  After she builds her cake, she’ll ask me to sing the birthday song and she’ll pretend to blow off the candles.  Then she will “cut” the cake using a Lego “knife”.

lego-magination3

And this is Hannah feeding her baby bear (”Bear-bee”) some milk using a Lego “milk bottle”.

lego-magination4

Look at that level of concentration right there… :)

I don’t even know where she got the idea of feeding a baby with a milk bottle.  She does not drink from a milk bottle…yet she holds the “bottle” and “feeds the bear” so well, don’t you think?

lego-magination5

creativity1

Ethan goes to a school that uses the “Learning through Play” methodology.  The kids are taught what they need to learn through arts and crafts, projects and simple stories they enjoy.  For example, in a Mathematics lesson, instead of drilling the concept of 1 + 2 = 3, the kids will pretend to buy things in a grocery store, e.g. “If  you buy 1 orange and 2 apples, how many in total do you get?”

In addition the amount of “homework” per se pales in comparison to other schools.  I am totally opposed to the idea of homework, especially at such a young age.  To have kids being drilled every day to complete their “work” is definitely uncalled for, in my opinion.  It brings unnecessary stress to the kids and to parents too.  Ethan only brings home homework once a week; 2 pages of handwriting (1 page of purely letters, lowercase and uppercase; and 1 page of words beginning with the letter of the week), and sometimes, 1 page of Chinese handwriting homework…and even then, I feel this is too much. :P

Ethan also brings back an English book and a Chinese book each week, as a move to inculcate the love of reading from young.  I applaud this move and feel that it is very useful as Ethan looks forward to reading it every week.

One of the aspects his school has been encouraging the kids on is in honing their creativity and storytelling skills, which I am truly happy with.  I’m impressed and am very pleased to see the progress Ethan has attained in this field.

When he was in Nursery, the kids were initially asked to draw what they thought or felt.  This gave the kids the freedom to explore their feelings and thoughts.  They were also prompted to express themselves verbally.  For example, in this following picture, Ethan was prompted “Love is…?” and he replied, “My purple bicycle.” “I love….?” and he replied, “The wind, kites and circles.”

creativity2

I found it fascinating that even his thoughts rhymed! :) (never mind that he does not own a purple bicycle!)

In this next creative writing exercise example, the theme was “When I was a baby…”.  The kids were asked to draw what they did as a baby and then narrate to the teacher.

creativity3

Ethan’s picture showed:

  • When I was a baby, I played with baby balls (depicted in top right)
  • When I was a baby, I played with a toy rectangle (bottom left)
  • When I was a baby, I drink breast milk (picture of the breast at the bottom right.. LOL) - I found it heartwarming that even till then, one of his fondest memories as a baby was being breastfed! :)

Another example of creative writing and imagination:

creativity4

As time went on and Ethan entered K1, the kids were then encouraged to create and write their own stories using their own ideas.  It may seem very difficult for kids their age, but you’ll be amazed at what stories these kids could come up with!  The kids would then draw out their ideas to illustrate it in a clearer manner.

An example of Ethan’s short story, as dictated:

creativity5

And one of “Creating a Fairytale”:

creativity6

creativity7

Such vivid imagination, don’t you think?

The next step which Ethan is being encouraged on now is creating and writing their own thoughts and stories.  Words are formed by way of trying to sound and blend the phonics of the alphabets together.  Some of the words might be spelled wrongly at first but what is being focused on is the idea that is created and not the spelling of the words.

creativity8

It’s a great start, isn’t it?  And I find that this is certainly better and more interesting that mindless drilling of words and letters and numbers…but that’s just me.

Anyway, Ethan is sharpening his listening and comprehension skills now; the teacher tells a story and the kids are prompted to repeat the story in their own words.  It’s an activity I hope to enforce at home too. :)

Apart of creative writing, I’m surprised the school curriculum includes some topics which I’ve either forgotten about or not aware of, like a few weeks ago, when Ethan told me there were FOUR layers in the rainforest: Forest Floor, Understory, Canopy and Emergent.

creativity9

Wow.

See?  We can learn things from kids every day too! :)

Weight

12.5 kilos.  (turns out my estimation of her weight had been wrong all this while, because when she went to visit the doctor recently, she was weighed in at 12.5 kilos only)

Height

Around 86cm

Teeth

Turns out I have been wrong all this time.. from the recent dental checkup, the dentist has counted that Hannah has only 15 teeth now (and not 17 teeth, as I’d thought): 4 incisors on the upper jaw,3 incisors bottom jaw.  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw.  4 pramolars.  4 more back pramolars have not made their appearance.

Motor Skills

  • Likes to pretend she is walking on a balance beam, be it at the side of the bed or on a self-constructed imaginary *beam* made of cards on the floor.
  • Still likes to jump on the trampoline.
  • Attempting to put on shoes by herself (and being rather stubborn about it)
  • Insists on buckling up by herself and shows her *strength* in doing so, by making a “tremendous effort” sound.  Favorite phrase: “Nooooo!!!  I can do myself!  Close the door, Mommy!”
  • Learning about textures and smells by sometimes grabbing hold of food and moulding with bare hands.  Gives me a headache, but I try to laugh it off as a process of learning.  SIGH.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah has started asking WHY.  ”Why Ethan go school, Mommy?”  ”Why we go home, Mommy?”
Hannah (pointing to a dot on the crook of her elbow): What’s that, Mommy?
Me: Oh, that’s a small dot from yesterday, when the nurse took a blood sample from your arm, remember?
    Hannah: But why Mommy?
Me: So that she can test if you are all right.
    Hannah (makes pitiful face): Painful….

For the record, she did not cry a teeny bit when the blood sample was taken.  So proud of my girl!

  • She can use “Thank you” and “You’re welcome” pretty consistently now.
  • Says “Sorry” readily when she accidentally causes hurt.
  • She loves to hug her blankie to sleep.  It’s a lovely crochet one which was a gift to her when she was a newborn.  She’s had it ever since.
  • Hannah loves to role-play now.  She’ll pretend she’s cooking something for us, or that she’s serving us some food.
  • She adores her soft toys.  One of her current favorites is a little cuddly giraffe she names Isabella (name given by Ethan, but has stuck since).

hannah-isabella

  • Hannah can also be rather stubborn at times and demands her own ways.  We have had to introduce the “naughty stool” to her on a few occasions, and she has been able to apologize soon after that.
  • She can recognize most letters of the alphabet and most numbers now.  If she is not sure, she will ask, “What the that number, Mommy?”
  • Has a favorite color, which changes every day according to the color of her shirt/dress.  However, lately she has been telling me her favorite color is GREEN.  Because “Green means GO, Mommy!” :) (her wonderful teacher Ethan has also taught her that “Red means STOP” and “Orange means Slow Down”)

Toilet Training

  • Hannah is about 85% toilet-trained for pooping now.  She is able to let me know when she needs to go poopoo, and can independently sit on the throne till she is done.

Food and Feeding

  • Still in the process of weaning completely from the breast at night.  There have been a few nights where she managed to fall asleep by herself (while hugging me) and also slept through the night without the need to wake up for a comfort suckle.
  • There are a few non-favorites foods of Hannah’s now, namely spring onions, onions, “brown stuff in food”.
  • One of her current favorites now are fish balls.

Having a knack of solving puzzles seems to run in the genes, because now Hannah, like her brother Ethan, is beginning to show a keen interest on puzzles.

She especially loves to build words from word puzzle letters and she has sort of “hijacked” this toy from Ethan.  When she was first introduced to it, she needed a lot of help piecing the words together, but now she can more or less form all the words by herself.  She can even recognize a word simply by looking at just one of the letters from the word.  For example, she would grab hold of the letter E and tell us she wants to build the word TREE.  Then she would look for all the remaining letters and piece them together.  Sometimes she would ask for some help by saying, “How this one goes, Mommy?”  But eventually, she would be able to finish forming all the words, arranging them neatly on the floor.

puzzleme2

One quirky behavior is that Hannah would arrange all the animals together in a row, and then all the rest of the words in another area on the floor.  It’s as if she can differentiate which are the living things and which are the inanimate objects.  All with the exception of the word BUG.  We’re guessing she does not know that a BUG is an insect, which is a living thing.

And while arranging the word puzzle pieces, she would say to herself, ” This one goes here…this one goes here…ta-daaa!!!”

puzzleme3

Another puzzle that she has been into lately is what she calls her “princess puzzle”.  It’s a jigsaw puzzle  and granted, it is quite a tough puzzle to piece together for a 2-year old, but repeated practice has resulted in her being able to piece together almost the entire puzzle.  But because the pieces are quite small, some of them have chipped off.

puzzleme4

Despite that, Hannah is still able to guess and place the pieces correctly in position.  Sometimes she would even correct me when I accidentally place them in the wrong place!

And here’s the finished result:

dentalcheck1

We took both Ethan and Hannah to see the dentist for their twice-a-year checkup yesterday. Well, for Ethan, it was his 2nd time with this dentist, but for Hannah, it’s her first time ever going for a dental checkup.

While waiting for their turn, the kids were fascinated by the door sensor that went “Ding Dong” every time they’d go near it.  The waiting area was pretty spacious, which allowed them to roam around.  SIGH.  They obviously ignored our reminders to “keep it down!” :P

dentalcheck2

I took both kids into the treatment room, because I wanted Hannah to observe Ethan having his checkup first.  The dentist remarked that Ethan’s teeth were absolutely clean and told him to keep up the good work.  Our boy was beaming from ear to ear! :)

Then came Hannah’s turn.  She willingly got into the patient’s chair and did not wriggle or scream when the dentist ask her to open her mouth to check.  Such is the power of sibling influence :) and I was very impressed by her courage at such a young age.

dentalcheck3

Unfortunately though, the dentist detected a small cavity in Hannah’s 2nd upper right incisor, which she said had penetrated the dentin layer (not sure why Hannah had not complained of pain).  Anyway, the dentist did a composite filling for Hannah using slow frequency equipment that would not be so *scary* and loud for a two-year-old.

And Hannah did GREAT.  I’m so proud of her.  She laid very still as I held her hand and the filling was done in less than 5 minutes.  No wailings, no screaming and no tears.

I told Hannah she had to let Daddy or Mommy brush her teeth from now on (or at least take turns with her, i.e. “First Mommy will brush your teeth…and now it’s Hannah’s turn!”).  Sometimes she would insist on brushing her teeth herself, which could be the reason why she had a cavity in the first place.  Well hopefully, in 6 months’ time when they go for their dental checkup again, the dentist will give an “all clear” report! :)

chopsticks1

Doesn’t Ethan look like a pro using his pair of training chopsticks?  They were a gift from Pauline Kor Kor a couple of years ago (when Ethan was way too small for chopsticks), but look at my little big boy now…

chopsticks2

He is not really a fan of noodles or beehoon, but just last week, I just asked him for fun if he wanted rice or beehoon for lunch.  Surprisingly, Ethan said he wanted beehoon soup, so that’s what I served him! :)

chopsticks4

Add a pair of chopsticks to the equation and you have a happy camper of a toddler :)

Weight

Possibly 13 kilos.

Height

Around 85cm

Teeth

17 teeth: 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 or 4 incisors bottom jaw.  2 canines upper jaw, 1 or 2 canines bottom jaw.  6 pramolars: if I’ve counted correctly, it’s 4 on the upper jaw and 2 on the bottom jaw (with 2 more appearing slowly).

Motor Skills

  • Likes to skip
  • Likes to jump on the trampoline.
  • Can be more or less independent on playground play structures and shows no fear sliding down slides, even those tunnel-slides.
  • Attempting to work the hula hoop.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah’s getting into the hang of asking questions now, but she phrases it rather uniquely when she uses “What”.  She’ll say, “What the that smell, Mommy?” or “What the that animal, Daddy?” or “What the that color, Ethan?”.  We’ll then simply rephrase it for her, by asking her, “Oh, what’s that smell? That’s the smell of durians!”
  • She can sing many many songs, her most recent accomplishment is singing the popular A-B-C song.  Last night, I asked her if it’s okay that I record her singing it and she agreed.  Let’s see when I can get a recording to post here. :)
  • Tantrums are also getting regular.  Like any two-year-old, she wants to assert herself and test her limits.
  • Hannah is currently being trained to use “Please”, “Thank you” and “Excuse Me”.  Her brother is a very good teacher :)
  • She can count by rote from 1-39.  According to “Teacher Ethan”, Hannah will say “30″ after she counts 39!

Food and Feeding

  • Hannah is weaned off the breast during the daytime.  She still needs to be breastfed to sleep though, but now in the middle of the night, she can sometimes be soothed to sleep without the breast.  We use the “hug method” or sometimes the “snuggle next to Daddy method”, the latter of which is not very popular with Daddy. :P
  • She is very curious when it comes to food and wants to see whatever we are eating/drinking and wants to try it, if possible.
  • She likes to take cookies, tau sar pneah and her favorite ice cream flavor is “chocolate”, so she tells everyone.

Weight

12 point something kilos, maybe close to 13 kilos even.

Height

Around 83cm

Teeth

Well, well…she finally cooperated and opened up her mouth long enough for me to count her teeth, and whaddya know?  Our little Hannah has 17 teeth now!  Yep…it’s an ODD number.  She seems to be missing her bottom left canine/incisor though.  Will take her to the dentist next month for a checkup.

Motor Skills

  • She is more or less comfortable with her movements now, and can do most of the things her brother does.  She runs a lot though.
  • Hannah loves dancing and will move her body to the music when she hears it.
  • Hannah can feed herself rather well, with either a spoon or a fork.  Of course, there will be some mess when she self-feeds, but it’s part and parcel of learning.
  • Loves to reach and touch the buttons on the elevator.  She can only reach the bottom-most row though, so she can only press G.  But she will still proclaim, as proud as can be, “See? I press G!”

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah’s competitive streak is beginning to surface.  For example, when a song starts playing, and someone else sings, she’ scream, “Noooo!!! Hannah SING!”  Thank goodness her brother is matured enough to say, “Never mind Hannah, we sing it together, alright?”
  • Hannah is becoming curioser and curioser.  She loves to ask, “What are you doing, Mommy?” or “Where are we going now, Daddy?” and when we answer her, she’ll reply with a knowing, “Ohhh…” Or when we tell her what we are doing, she’ll request, “Let me see…”
  • She can also express her likes for certain things. For instance, when she hears a song she likes, she will say, “I like this song.  What’s this song?” or when she eats something she likes, she’ll say, “Mmmm…nice.  I like this one.”
  • When she does something wrong, or when she accidentally physically hurts me, and I wince in pain, she’ll say, “Sorry Mommy.”  She gets this empathic trait from her brother :)
  • Loves to *socialize*.  When someone is on the phone, she’ll run along and ask, “Say Hello?” and then she’ll say, “Hello Aunty!” or whatever into the receiver.  That’s right.  She’s not shy at all, this girl.

Food and Feeding

  • Hannah is weaned off the breast during the daytime.  She will only ask to be breastfed after I have taken my bath at night and when she is ready for bed.  I’ll work on weaning her off her night feeds soon.  Just don’t ask me when.
  • She is able to feed herself with a spoon or fork.
  • She can drink quite independently with a regular cup or with a straw.
  • She is very open to trying new foods, and can eat quite quickly too.  Her current favorites are carrots (boiled in soup) and tuna sandwich.

hannah-numbers

Last Sunday, we were all hanging out in our home, and Pete was playing with the kids.  He was holding a numbered flash card and he asked Hannah if she wanted the card.  Hannah was going about her *work*, moving blocks and stacking toys, walking around here and there, seemingly ignoring her Daddy.

Pete asked a few times if she wanted the card, but she didn’t respond.  He asked, “Hannah, do you want this?” and “Come Hannah, Daddy will give this card to you…”

Then all of a sudden, Hannah ran towards her Daddy, swiped the card from his hand and said, “I dowan FOUR!”

Pete was dumbfounded, because he was indeed holding the card with the number 4 on it.

You see, up till then, we hadn’t realized that Hannah could recognize numbers.  We only know that she could count 1-10 by rote.

Pleasantly surprised, we tested her newfound skill further by holding up a few other numbered cards, and she could tell us most of the numbers 1-9.  Sometimes she would confuse 9 and 7 because of their similar shapes, but it’s a great start.  Of course, Ethan tried to get Hannah to say the numbers 11-20 too.. LOL

The wonderful thing is that we didn’t even teach her how to say those numbers, because we don’t believe in forcing a young toddler to learn numbers or alphabets.  She just picked it up on her own, probably through observation. :) … or probably it’s just in her genes. :P … or perhaps because she is a breastfed baby! :)

Weight

12.3 kilos as weighed in at doc’s about 4 weeks ago.

Height

Around 83cm

Teeth

She still wouldn’t open up her mouth long enough for me to count accurately, but from what I could see/estimate, Hannah now has 16 teeth: 8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 4 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom) and left side (top and bottom); also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw, and 2 canines on the bottom jaw.  Her 4 other pramolars might have already started growing, but as mentioned, she wouldn’t open up wide enough for me to see.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah is a handful when we dine out.  She will sit and eat when she is hungry, but she she is full and restless, she’ll announce, “I’m full.  I wanna walk.”  And then attempt to climb out of her high chair.
  • She can put on her sandals by herself (bravo Hannah!), although sometimes it is on the wrong side.
  • Hopping and jumping skills have improved.  She can also manage jumping on the trampoline!  Since March, I’ve started taking her to the parent-toddler class once a week, and it has certainly helped to hone her social skills, as well as her motor and creativity skills.  She looks forward to each session and cheerfully participates in all the activities, especially the music and movement ones.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Beginning to show more and more of a stubborn personality, no thanks to genes from both Mommy and Daddy.  Uses the words “No!” and “No want!” (don’t want) when she wants to tell us what she wants.  But she also uses “Yeah” and “Yes”, so it’s a healthy balance.
  • Can carry on simple conversations with Ethan.  It’s really enlightening to see them communicate.  Of course, they also fight sometimes, but that’s a whole other story.
  • Hannah’s vocabulary continues to increase exponentially as she mimics and parrots almost everything Ethan says (especially).  Interesting words and phrases she says are, “Mother Goose!”, “Queensbay Mall!”, “Gurney Plaza!”, “Fatty Loh!” and “I no-no” (I dunno).
  • Some of her pronunciation is not that clear and accurate yet, but it’s good enough for us to understand what she means.
  • Hannah is also polishing up on her manipulation skills.  Sometimes when we want to lead her away from something, and we hold her hand and guide her away, she will scream at the top of her lungs and say, “Uhhh….my HAND!!!”, as though we are hurting her!

Food and Feeding

  • Hannah is more or less weaned off the breast during the daytime.  She will only ask to be breastfed after I have taken my bath at night and when she is ready for bed.
  • She is able to feed herself rice, porridge or pasta with a spoon, and is able to use her fingers to eat breads and buns.
  • She can drink quite independently with a regular cup or with a straw.
  • Loves oranges and papayas, and all kinds of soup.
  • Loves experimenting on new foods.  Once, she saw a small bowl of chilli on the table while we were having dinner, and asked for some.  Hannah said, “Try some, please?”, while pointing to the chilli.  “No, baby,” I said, “That’s spicy.  Maybe next time when you’re older, okay?”  She looked at me and said, “Drink water…” (meaning if it’s spicy, she can always drink water)

Potty Training

  • Potty training is still ongoing, and I am not really pushing her.  She understands that poopoo should go into the toilet and she says things like “Icky!” when she poopoos.
  • She likes to *pretend* to wipe herself clean, but insists that I wash her butt with water after every poopoo.

rio

Last Friday, on a whim, we decided to take BOTH kids to watch Rio.  We knew Ethan could sit through the entire movie, but for Hannah, it was a first.  True, she was only 2, but at home, she had displayed tremendous concentration when she watches videos and TV, we figured why not try it?  The worst that could happen was if she made a fuss, I would just take her out of the cinema.

We used one of those free child movie passes that came with a Happy Meal purchase.  We had to buy 2 adult movie tickets though, to get the free child movie pass, and it was only valid at TGV.  The only TGV in Penang is at 1st Avenue, so it was a first time watching a movie there for all of us too.  Hannah did not need a ticket, so she just sat on my lap.

rio1

The kids went wild with excitement and waited eagerly for our cinema number to flash, so that we could go in.

rio2

Inside the cinema, Hannah was kept busy eating popcorn, so she was very well behaved for about 45 minutes or so.  Once the popcorn was exhausted, she started playing with my mineral water, and fidgeting in her seat.  Note to self: in future, make sure the popcorn lasts the entire movie. :P

She began to wander up and down the aisles and wanted to try out the couple seats at the back row, the other seats beside us as well as the stairs.  The suddenly she wanted to go potty (for a big one).  So I had to take her out to the toilet.  Thankfully the toilet was very clean, and just a few steps away from our cinema :)

When we got back, Hannah was still restless.  Good thing though, that the cinema was very empty that day.  She snuggled up and tried to get some shuteye, but couldn’t.  In the end, we managed to sit through the entire movie, without too much of a fuss.

Would we do it again?  Sure, if it’s a suitable movie, and this time, I’ll make sure there’s plenty of popcorn to go round!

Oh, and I’m still perplexed as to why Rio has already been released in Malaysia, whereas the release date in US is only on April 15th!  Ethan LOVES the show though…when he wanted to go toilet somewhere near the end, he said, “Mommy I need to go to the toilet.  Can you please pause the show?”

Haha…yeah, we’re currently on a collecting spree for all the Rio toys from McDonald’s…(see first picture at the top)

Weight

Around 12 kilos or slightly more.

Height

Slightly more than 82 cm, but she certainly appears to be growing taller each day.

Teeth

She still wouldn’t open up her mouth long enough for me to count accurately, but from what I could see/estimate, Hannah now has 16 teeth: 8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 4 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom) and left side (top and bottom); bottom left pramolar is taking its time to grow!; also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw, and 2 canines on the bottom jaw.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can imitate actions (especially those in songs) really well, and can pick them up almost immediately.
  • Loves to climb up and slide down a slide, not showing any fear at all.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah can communicate really well with us now, and can carry on simple conversations, like when we ask her where she wants to go for dinner, she’ll reply “Pappa Rich!” or “McDonald’s!”
  • She adamantly insists that she is not a baby anymore.  When we ask her, “Is Hannah a baby?”, she’ll say, “NO! Toddler..”
  • She uses a few phrases rather often: “Don’t want”, “Don’t want anymore”, “Don’t do that!”, “Mommy COME!”, “See?”, “Here?”, “There?”, “Go away!” etc
  • Hannah is starting to choose the clothes she wants to wear.  Sometimes when I lay out her jammies, she’ll say, “No Mommy!  Not this one!”  and then she’ll lead me to the chest of drawers where her clothes are kept and wait while I open it for her to choose which one she wants.  She’s also very choosy on the diaper she wants to wear…
  • Tantrums are upon us, as she sometimes demands to get her own way.  We’ve had to put our foot (and feet) down on several occasions, with Hannah stubbornly refusing to sit on the naughty stool, kicking and screaming all the way.  Eventually she did calm down and sat on the stool, and said her “sorries”, but we’re anticipating *tough* days ahead.  SIGH.

Food and Feeding

  • Although Hannah is still breastfed, I’m in the process of weaning her off.  There have been days when she did not need to be breastfed the whole day, and only needed the breast at night.  There’s still a lot of work to be done, but we’re getting there.  Sometimes when I tell her there’s no more milk left, she’ll quietly obey, look at me and say, “Cup?”  And then I’ll just pour her some milk in a cup to drink from.  She currently takes fresh milk and chocolate milk and also a little bit of GainPlus formula, sometimes mixed with oatmeal.  Hannah is also taking yogurt in her daily diet, as an addition to her dairy supplement.
  • Loves all other food. :)

Potty Training

  • She is able to tell us when she needs to go poopoo and can poopoo in the adult toilet using a child toilet seat about 95% of the time.
  • Lately she has also started to pull her pants and diaper down by herself when she wants to peepee.  Sometimes she’ll say, “peepee”, and we’ve had success on several occasions.  She’ll smile happily when we hear the peepee trickle into the toilet and she’ll say, “Sticker!” (yes, I’m giving her a sticker for every successful time she peepees or poopoos in the toilet)
  • Of course there are times when she asks to peepee or poopoo but it’s just a false alarm :P

On March 2nd 2011, my little princess Hannah turned TWO.  As usual, I was again left in wonderment at where the time had flown.  It seemed like just yesterday that I held her as a wee babe in my arms, and now she has blossomed into a little toddler, all geared up for the terrible twos.

hannah-mar2-bday1

We went out for a family dinner at Friday’s for the simple reason that the kids love the food and service, also because they provide “birthday song singing” plus a slice of complimentary birthday cake/dessert.

hannah-mar2-bday2

And how old are you today, Hannah? :)

 hannah-mar2-bday3

Oh yeah, she couldn’t stop doing that…it was like she “knew” we were celebrating her 2nd birthday that day…

hannah-mar2-bday4

The staff at Friday’s asked Ethan if he’d wanted to sing Hannah a birthday song, using the salt shaker as a pretend mic, but in the end he had a bit of a stage fright.

hannah-mar2-bday5

Hannah…looking on in awe at the birthday dessert that was presented to her.

hannah-mar2-bday6

She blew out the candle perfectly!  She’s a professional now, I’d say! :)

hannah-mar2-bday7

…and she couldn’t wait to dig in!

hannah-mar2-bday8

Haha…she also insisted on *cutting* the cake!

hannah-mar2-bday9

And when we got back home, after the kids were bathed and dressed in their jammies, it was time for presents!  Here’s Ethan giving Hannah an extra loving big brother hug, while presenting her with a present from him.

hannah-mar2-bday10

Hannah screamed in delight when she saw what it was, and she exclaimed, “Baby Bop!!!”

hannah-mar2-bday11

After that, she peeled open the present Daddy and Mommy gave her excitedly.

hannah-mar2-bday12

And discovered a *new friend*: a baby doll!  I finally found a doll which is age-appropriate for her and which she absolutely adores!

hannah-mar2-bday13

Happy Birthday Hannah!

hannah-bday-pg1

Slightly more than a week away from Hannah’s actual 2nd birthday, we had a very simple lunch gathering/celebration in Penang.  We chose to have the lunch at the Chinese Recreational Club.  It was actually my first time having lunch there, with rice and dishes.  I had been there before, but it was for a wedding course dinner.

The kids were very excited (as they usually are) and Ethan (more than Hannah LOL!) was looking forward to celebrating his sister’s birthday.

hannah-bday-pg2

Also, another reason for the excitement was that Ah Kong and Ah Ma from Ipoh came all the way to Penang to join in the fun and celebrations.

hannah-bday-pg4

Took me some time to coax her into this gorgeous dress her Daddy bought her, but she was sweet-talked into it when I told her it was going to make her VERY pretty! :)  She had wanted to wear sandals at first too, but we managed to persuade her into her Mary Janes.  Don’t you think Hannah looks adorable? :)

hannah-bday-pg3

After our very satisfying and delicious lunch, we had a cake-cutting ceremony (we ordered a cheese cake this time round, and everyone had seconds!).  Hannah again proudly showed off her perfect blowing-out-the-candle skill, and enjoyed the cake and the attention.

hannah-bday-pg5

…and she was also extra eager to cut the cake:

hannah-bday-pg6

hannah-bday-pg7

Ethan also had *other* attractions besides the food.  Anyone and everyone who has an iPhone or iPad is immediately Ethan’s best friend, and on that day he was best buds with Tuah Kim Poh (with her iPad) and Uncle Yao (with his iPhone):

hannah-bday-pg8

Of course, Hannah was not distracted at all, and preferred to enjoy her yummy birthday cake!

hannah-bday-pg9

hannah-bday-kl1

Although it would have been a good 2 weeks more before Hannah officially turns two, we decided to have a birthday celebration for her in KL anyway.  This would also make it easier for the “Klang Valley” folks to attend the celebration.  And besides, we were planning a short vacation to KL anyways…one of the reasons being to visit that mecca of storage and organization solutions… :)

I was looking for a kid-friendly place to have the lunch celebration, and decided on Marmalade in Bangsar Village II.   I’d read great reviews about this restaurant which offers healthy and delicious food and was looking forward to having lunch there.   Reservations were made like 2 days before the event, and we were very pleased with experience.

The restaurant was abuzz with activity, and as we walked in, who should we bump into but Paik Ling and her family!  Good to meet her again after such a long time, and I was amazed by how much her boys have grown!

hannah-bday-kl2

And here, we have some random shots taken at lunch:

hannah-bday-kl3

Ethan *telling* us what he thinks of his Oreo milkshake.

hannah-bday-kl4

Enjoying Spaghetti Carbonara (for the first time!)

hannah-bday-kl5

Hannah: Love that dress you’re wearing, darlin’….where did you get it from?
Caitlynn: Ooohhh yes, I got it on sale at the *Princess Mall* last month!

hannah-bday-kl6

Contented in Pauline Korkor/Godma’s arms…

hannah-bday-kl7

Special yummy cookie treat for the birthday girl!  Unfortunately neither Ethan nor Hannah wanted to eat it.  Ethan said, “Mommy, if we eat it, the face will say, ‘Ouch! Ouch! Ouch!’”
So Mommy had to eat it all on her own…

And what about the food at Marmalade?  I was in full blogger mode that day, as I tried to capture as many shots of the food as possible… For starters, we had Healthy Nachos, topped with delicious minced beef and melting cheese…really good, especially with the three different dips: guacamole, salsa and sour cream!

marmalade1

We also ordered a plate of fries served with aioli.  Surprisingly, Ethan was very adventurous, and loved the aioli dip (maybe because it didn’t have such a strong garlic taste as expected)!  Fries were done to perfection, not too oily and not too soggy.  Just the way I like it.

marmalade2

Of course, the kids’ meals arrived first: Spaghetti Bolognese and Spaghetti Carbonara.

marmalade4

marmalade5

Hannah didn’t want to eat much (perhaps she was excited about her birthday?), but Ethan ate quite a lot…maybe cuz he wanted to go play in the kids’ play area (which I must say is a welcome addition to any restaurant).  I was pretty surprised he was willing to try the Spaghetti Carbonara that day too :)

Drinks we ordered: Day Starter on the left and Paw Paw Passion (Papaya milkshake) on the right.

marmalade3

Sounds of Havana: a very colorful salad, which tasted absolutely delicious…and of course, healthy to boot! :)

marmalade6

I had to order the Spaghetti Pesto with Chicken , which was highly recommended by Rinnah.  And I was glad I did.  The spaghetti was served perfectly al dente, and the combination of herbs and flavors infused into the pasta was simply sublime.

marmalade7

Hubbs ordered his all-time favorite, the Spaghetti Aglio Olio.  Almost everyone who tasted it said it was better than that Italian restaurant we like to frequent in KL.  Maybe because the aglio olio here is cooked in a more oriental way.  Me?  I love both versions!  Yeah, I’m a pasta freak :)

marmalade8

Moroccan Lamb Shank for the lamb lovers…the lamb was tender and very flavorful.  I didn’t try the brown rice served with it though, but those who did said it was done just right, and didn’t taste anything like brown rice should…whatever that meant. LOL

 marmalade9

And finally, we ordered a plate of the Turkey Ham, Bacon and Mushroom Quiche.  I was incredibly grateful I had space in my tummy for this dish, because it was SO good!  Had been ages since I had quiche, so I relished and cherished every morsel.

marmalade10

So after lunch, we headed back to Pauline’s house for cake cutting and presents.  This was the cake I baked for Hannah.  We brought it all the way from Penang, with me holding on to it in the car and then setting up the fondant pieces before the birthday song was sung.

hannah-bday-kl8

The ribbons at the side of the cake were not there initially.  I had to use them to salvage the cake the night before because it was falling apart.  Find out how I saved the cake here.

hannah-bday-kl9

Hannah’s surprised expression was priceless as she saw her favorite character on her cake: Baby Bop.  We had kept the cake a secret from her all this time.  I had shown the cake decorations to Ethan but everytime Hannah was within earshot of us, he would cheekily say, “Hannah - nothing!! hehehe…”

hannah-bday-kl10

Ethan asked Hannah to say hi to Baby Bop, to which she happily said, “Hi Baby Bop!”, while waving her hand.

hannah-bday-kl12

Hannah was smiling all the way when we sang her the Happy Birthday song.  She even knew how to blow out the candle on cue, without getting saliva all over the cake!  Everyone was SO impressed :)

The boys tried to *help* her to cut the cake…

hannah-bday-kl11

…but ultimately, the birthday girl got to do the honors…

** I don’t have the heart to throw out the Baby Bop figurine yet.  Just the other day, Hannah asked to let her “touch Baby Bop”. SIGH.

Our recent Chinese New Year celebration was nothing short of exciting.  As is usually the case, this year saw us travelling from Penang to Taiping on the eve, then to Ipoh on the 1st day, and then back to Taiping for a pit stop before heading back to Penang on the 3rd day of Chinese New Year.

Talk about a major cake overdose! :P  Obviously the kids didn’t mind…here they are, patiently waiting for me to cut the cake and serve them.

cny-2011-13

And then it was presents time!  Gift exchanges are so much fun when accompanied by hugs and love!

cny-2011-14

We arrived back in Penang on the 3rd day of Chinese New Year, which coincides with Ethan’s Chinese birthday (he was born on the 3rd day of the Lunar New Year).  We had yet another birthday celebration for Ethan, this time at home.  And since we could not get a freshly made cake from any cake shop we inquired from, and also, it was too late to bake a cake for him, Daddy very creatively volunteered to shape the cake we used during the Ipoh celebration into something new (perhaps he’d been watching too much of Top Chef!)…and voila!  Looks a bit like a piece from a jigsaw, if you ask me…

Dinner was pizza delivered to our doorstep, on top of the cookies and mandarin oranges we had at home.  And here’s how you should eat a slice of pizza!

Happy New Year everyone!  Hope the Year of the Rabbit will bring you boundless joy and blessings!

Weight

At a recent visit to the doc’s for her cough and cold, she was weighed in at 12 kilos.

Height

Slightly more than 82 cm

Teeth

She wouldn’t open up her mouth long enough for me to count accurately, but from what I could see/estimate, Hannah now has 16 teeth: 8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 4 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom) and left side (top and bottom); bottom left pramolar is taking its time to grow!;  also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw, and 2 canines on the bottom jaw.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can jump pretty well for her age, and for someone who is not even 2 years old, I would say that’s no mean feat!
  • She’s quite adept at climbing up the stairs by herself, and she even knows it’s safer to hold on to the railings.  But we still insist on holding her hand all the time, of course.
  • Also loves to run around, especially with her brother, but sometimes she’ll ask us to “carry” her.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah is very very sociable and friendly, and loves to say “hello” or “hi” to everyone she meets.  She also loves to play with other kids and will take the initiative to initiate play.
  • She is also very inquisitive, and keeps asking “What’s that?” while pointing at things, or “Who’s that?” when she sees someone she doesn’t know.
  • Hannah can count 1-10 by rote.  In fact I am rather surprised by the accuracy in her pronunciation too.
  • She can recognize the color “yellow”, “pink”, “purple” and “orange”.
  • She can express her opinion, i.e. “don’t want”, or make a choice as to which one of 2 or 3 items offered to her she wants.
  • She can say “NO” very very clearly.
  • Sometimes she does throw her tantrums and tries to get her own way.  In many ways, Hannah is even more stubborn than Ethan was, and she does not respond with fear to the word “NO” when we say it.  However, we’re glad that she’s learning how to say “Sorry” from her brother, although it might take some time before she actually learns the meaning of it.
  • Hannah understands the meaning of *possession*, and can tell which things belong to her, to Ethan, to Mommy or Daddy.  When asked “Whose is this?”, she’ll respond “Hannah’s!”

Food and Feeding

A new snack that she absolutely loves is the arrowroot chips that are so popular during Chinese New Year.  I have to restrict her intake too, as this girl can eat this snack non-stop.

Hannah is still breastfed and she still asks for “milk” especially at night.  Sometimes when she asks for “milk”, I’ll tell her Mommy does not have any more milk.  Her response would be to say “A bit left” (meaning there’s only a bit of milk left) or she would say, “Other side”.

Potty Training

She can successfully poo poo in the potty 95% of the time now, which means less dirty diapers for me to deal with!  Yay!!!  She’ll tell me she wants to “poopoo” and when I take her there, she’ll sit for a while, sometimes fiddling with a paper wipe.  At times, it will be a false alarm, but we’ve had success on most occassions.

As I did with Ethan, I’m putting Hannah straight on the adult toilet with a child toilet seat.  It makes the transition to the adult toilet seamless and it’s also less of a hassle to clean up.

After she does her “business”, she always requests for me to “wash butt” for her.

The day Ethan had been looking forward to finally arrived.  We had wanted to have his birthday celebration in school on his actual birthday on January 31st, but one of his teachers would not be around then, so we decided to have it the Friday before his birthday, i.e. on the 28th.

This time round, we bought the party gift packs well in advance, and I already had them packed up days before the event.  Ethan had wanted a Mickey Mouse themed party, so we got stationery sets according to theme and placed them in party packs.  Ethan wanted party hats too, so we got some to match as well.

bdayschool1

There was a reason we didn’t put any edibles in the party pack.  All the candies, chocolates and sweets were going into this piñata!

bdayschool2

I spent days (and nights) making this piñata, and yes…Ethan specifically wanted to have one at his celebration.  Initially I planned on making a piñata where the kids would take turns to hit it till it broke, but decided instead on making a pull-string piñata.  It was a less violent alternative to the piñata game, and the kids would not be *tormented* by the fact that they were hitting their favorite characters on Mickey Mouse Clubhouse…(well, that and also because my balloon piñata burst the first time I set it up. LOL)

bdayschool3

Anyway, this Mickey Mouse birthday cake pull-string piñata had a trapdoor underneath the bottom layer, and I fixed the ribbons in such a way that only one ribbon would open the trapdoor, releasing all the goodies.

I managed to keep the piñata a surprise from Ethan until the day of his birthday celebration, and he was thrilled to see it that morning.  Made my day when he exclaimed that he really loved the piñata, and that it was beautiful! :)

bdayschool4

So Pete and I arrived in his school and brought all the stuff up to his classroom.  First his teacher requested Ethan to pass the party hats round.

bdayschool5

And then it was birthday cake time.  Ethan had also spelled out exactly how he wanted his cake, and this year, it was my utmost pleasure to be able to bake and make the cake for him.

bdayschool6

As soon as the cake was put on the table, 21 pairs of little feet rushed to the table to take a look at the cake.

bdayschool7

And someone’s party hat very nearly fell into the cake…

bdayschool8

We sang Happy Birthday in English, Mandarin and BM, and then Ethan blew the candle and cut the cake.

bdayschool9

bdayschool10

I was so touched when a few kids came to ask me for second helpings of the cake :)

Every child that is celebrating his/her birthday will get to sit in the teacher’s chair and give out party packs, and that’s exactly what Ethan got to do.  Look how happy he is…

bdayschool11

The final part of the birthday celebration was the piñata game.  Daddy had to stand on a chair and hold it up for the entire duration of the game.  After the teacher had explained the rules, the kids each took turns to pull on a ribbon.

bdayschool12

And here’s the one who managed to yank open the trap door!

bdayschool13

Unfortunately somehow the candy and goodies got stuck in the trapdoor and I had to manually jiggle it so everything would tumble down.

And as soon as the goodies came tumbling down, sheer havoc ensued as all the kids rushed to claim whatever they could get.

bdayschool14

Here’s Ethan with whatever goodies he could get…

bdayschool15

… and the piñata that (thankfully) stayed intact during the game, finally fell apart when the party was over!

Weight

Have not weighed her since the last weigh-in in December, but she might have put on a little bit more weight now, so maybe 11.4 or 11.5 kilos.

Height

Slightly more than 82 cm

Teeth

15 teeth: 8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 4 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom) and left side (top and bottom), also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw, and 1 canine on the bottom right.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah started lifting both feet from the floor and making small jumps a few days ago.
  • She loves playing with jigsaw puzzles and will attempt to complete them on her own.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah definitely knows more than her expected 20 words for a typical 22-month old (Source).  And she’s stringing words together to make requests and statements too.  She can also answer simple questions, like when we ask her, “Where did Ethan go?”, she’ll say, “Ethan skool”; or “Where’s Daddy?”, she’s reply, “Daddy ofees!”
  • She is very musically minded, in that she is able to pick up the tune and certain words of a song, with ease.  Just the other day, I started singing, “Jesus loves me, this I know” to her, and she managed to mimic some of the words and the tune almost immediately.  When I showed her the actions for “God is so good”, she followed me almost immediately.
  • She is a pro at requesting for us to sing certain songs for her: “How I wonder” or “Star” refers to “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star” (in fact she can sing this song almost entirely on her own now), “Baa Baa” is self-explanatory, and so is “E-I-E-I-O”.  There was a time when we were in church and at the point when everyone was quiet, Hannah said, “E-I-E-I-O..quack quack here and quack quack there!”  *faints*
  • Just like her brother is a drama king, she is a drama queen.  Lately when we take her out, and if the sun hits any part of her body, she’ll scream, “HOT!”
  • She is very affectionate and shows affection readily, be it to her soft toys, or to close family and friends.
  • She’s also very stubborn and determined to do things herself.  When we volunteer to help her by saying, “Let Mommy help?”, she’ll shake her head and say, “NOooooo!!!  Hannah help!”  She’s attempting to put her sandals on by herself and buckle up her safety belt by herself too.

Food and Feeding

Hannah continues to show that she loves food.  And whenever she sees us eating something she has not seen before, she’ll say, “Try!”, meaning she would like to try it.  At home, I allow her to experiment and feed herself with a spoon and bowl whenever I can.

Hannah is still breastfed and she still asks for “milk” especially at night.  Sometimes when she asks for “milk”, I’ll tell her Mommy does not have any more milk.  She’ll ignore me of course and insist there is “some more”.

To ease her bowel movement, Hannah is also on an occasional diet of prunes.  She loves them, so I ain’t complaining!  I’m also supplementing her diet with chewable chocolate-flavored Calcium & Magnesium, besides the regular Vitamin C.

Elegant word art (you make me smile) from Bethany

Weight

11.3 kilos, as measured in doc’s office on Dec 10 2010.

Height

Around 82 cm

Teeth

13 teeth: 8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 2 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom), also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw, and 1 canine on the bottom right.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah loves to imitate what her brother does, especially…so it comes as no surprise that she loves to climb: on chairs, our couch, and even tables!!! (gasp!) She’s also starting to learn how to jump.
  • She can drink by herself from a sippy cup, sometimes she prefers to drink from a regular cup, but I will normally put just a little bit of water, so she does not get drenched.

Communication and Social Skills

  • I’m seriously losing track of all the new words she is learning every day.  Hannah can speak in really short meaningful sentences now, e.g. “Mommy come!”, “Daddy help”, “Ethan, buhbye!”
  • She has also begun picking up more and more multi-syllable words, like “rabbit” (although the way she says it makes it sound like “Brad Pitt”), “Jungle Junction”, “small scratch”, “bubble”
  • Oh yes….and NOW she can clearly say, “DADDY” (instead of “Dehdeh”) …making Daddy ever so proud :)
  • Because she is parroting a LOT, she has also begun learning how to count 1 - 10, thanks to Ethan. :)
  • Hannah is beginning to exhibit signs of the “terrible twos”.  She will throw a tantrum and scream and cry when she doesn’t get her way.
  • She’s also showing a strong sense of determination (much like Mommy :P)
  • Hannah loves taking a shower, and will willingly stop doing anything she was doing, when I announce that it’s time to bathe.
  • She loves to sing!  We’ve caught her several times, just trying to sing nursery rhymes her own way, like “Old MacDonald”, “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, and also the “I Love You” song from Barney.  Oh yeah…her favorite character from Barney is Baby Bop!

Food and Feeding

Hannah likes to feed herself, but she makes a mess most of the time.  Although she seems to take to food very well, there are some times when she just won’t eat, perhaps due to moodiness.  But she will typically take the same type of food we take.  Unlike her brother, who prefers chicken when we have our chicken rice, Hannah seems to prefer the char siew (barbecued pork).  She’ll specifically ask for “pork”.

Hannah is still breastfed and she still asks for “milk” especially at night.

lego

There’s just something about Lego that gets to kids.  Ethan loves creating masterpieces with the Lego blocks and Hannah has also found something she can do with them: STACK

build1

See how high her tower is?

build2

Look at the level of intense concentration…

build3

I’m always amazed at how long she can just sit there and quietly build the tower… :)

Maybe I’ll ask her to build one that is taller than she is!

Height/Length

Around 82 cm

Teeth

8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 2 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom), also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can eat by herself and finish her food quite fast too.
  • She loves to try new things, especially in the playground.  She loves the slides, but must still be supervised.
  • She likes to draw and scribble and paint.  She’ll play with the doodle pad and color pencils and paint (sometimes).  I might introduce her to finger painting soon!
  • Hannah loves to climb stairs, but we need to watch out when she is going down the stairs though.
  • She can bounce, whether on the couch or the floor; this is the first step towards learning how to jump.
  • Hannah can take a DVD, press the EJECT button on the player, insert the DVD, and press the CLOSE button on the player.
  • Basically, she will try to follow whatever her brother is doing.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Most of the time, we can understand what Hannah wants to convey, be it from her words or from her actions.  Sometimes if we do not understand what she is trying to say, Hannah will lead us by the hand and point to whatever it is she wants or do.
  • Her vocabulary is increasing every single day, so much so that I have really lost count of all the words she knows.  I’ll try to list as many as I can:
    • More” - actually she could already say this word a few months ago, and she uses it when she wants to ask for more food.
    • She knows her animals too, and she can say: Duck, Cat, Dog, Turtle, Cow, Pig, Bird, Bear
    • Three syllable words and phrases: “Mommy Come!”, “Mommy Card!”, “Baby BOP!”, “Chuggington!” and “Bar-wee!!” for “Barney”
    • Last syllable of some two-syllable and three-syllable words: “mote” for “remote”, “Mau” for “Mickey Mouse”, “Lo” for “Hello”, “puh” for “Apple”, “per” for “diaper”, “More..” while making the sign on both her hands for “No More!”,
    • Round
    • Yoyo
    • Wear (she’ll say “wear!” and point to her sandals, asking me to help her wear them)
    • Colors: “Lello” for “Yellow”, Red, “Boo” for “blue”, Green, Black, White
    • “Dai” for “dry”
    • Walk
    • “kau” for “couch”
    • Night - she says this when she wants to say “Goodnight”
    • Numbers she can say: Two, three, four, “fai”, eight, “nai”, ten
    • Ma (for “Ah Ma”), “Kurng” (for “Ah Kong”), “Poh”, “Pek”, “Koko”, “Kor Kor”, “Koo”, “Kim”, “Nah!” for “Hannah”
    • “Barbeee!” for “barbecued pork” i.e. char siew
    • Door
    • Baby
    • “Ka-kai”
    • “Tight” if she wants to tell me something she is wearing is too tight, and “tights” to refer to her tights.
    • “Wet” - she’ll tell me if her clothes are wet, or if she needs be changed (if her diaper is wet)
    • Body parts: Hair, eyes, nose, “mau” for mouth, fingers (she will show us her fingers), toes, leg, knees.
    • “Poo poo” and “Pee pee” :)
    • …but she still calls “Deh-deh” for “Daddy”
  • She can complete the ends of some favorite songs:
    • Mommy: Twinkle twinkle little..
      Hannah: TAR!!! … How I…
      Mommy: … wonder what you…
      Hannah: ARE!!
    • Radio: I got a feeling…that tonight’s gonna be a good..
      Hannah: NIGHT!
Radio: That tonight’s gonna be a good..
      Hannah: NIGHT!
    • Radio: Every time I close my…
      Hannah: EYES
Radio: I see my name in shining…
      Hannah: LIGHTS!
    • Mommy: London bridge is falling…
      Hannah: DOWN!
      Mommy: Falling…
      Hannah: DOWN!
      Mommy: Falling…
      Hannah: DOWN!

Food and Feeding

Still going very strong with her food intake, I’m pleased to note that Hannah is very adventurous in trying all kinds of food, even the salad that I make!  However, she loves to eat off my plate!  She also finds joy in feeding herself, either with a spoon or with her fingers.

In addition to drinking fresh milk and chocolate milk, I’ve also recently just supplemented her milk intake with GainPlus formula milk.  She will only drink the milk if it is mixed and cooked with oats though, and she takes about 1 or 2 helpings a day.

Hannah is still breastfed and she still asks for “milk” especially at night.

Hannah is also very receptive to the Amway chewable multivitamins I give her, and she can easily consume one tablet herself, just by chewing.

Weight

More than 11.2 kilos, and when she struggles while we are carrying her, it feels MUCH heavier!

Height/Length

81cm, roughly a head shorter than Ethan.

Teeth

8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 2 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom), also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw.

Now Hannah wants to hold the toothbrush and brush her teeth herself.  Yeah, she’s in that phase now where she wants to do everything herself.  So I normally will put some toothpaste on my index finger and brush her teeth for her first before she brushes with her toothbrush.  Thankfully, she still allows me to do that :)

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can hold the spoon and fork and eat by herself, albeit not in a very tidy manner.  A good start, though.
  • She can run quite well, so it’s quite a task taking both Hannah and Ethan out now, since we have to chase after them. (Yep, she no longer wants to be in the stroller)
  • She’s beginning to learn how to jump.
  • Hannah loves to empty the contents of boxes and containers all over the floor.  Sometimes she would fill up containers with building blocks and just throw them out on the floor, making a really loud noise!

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah speaks mostly in mono-syllabic words now, but we can usually understand what she wants to relay to us.
  • She uses “UP!” when she wants us to carry her up, and when she sees me putting food on the table for dinner, she’ll say, “Rai! Rai!” (for rice)
  • Words she can say now:
    • “Milk”, pronounced correctly as “merlk”
    • “Bag”
    • “Chair”
    • “Park”
    • “Car”
    • “Ball”
    • “Door”
    • “Light”
    • “Two”, “three”, “eight”
    • “Bai!” (for “belly button”)
    • “Hair”
    • “My”, “Me!”
    • …and the start of terrible twos: “NO!”
  • She is able to complete the end syllable of some nursery rhymes, like Twinkle Twinkle Little Star and Baa Baa Black Sheep.
  • Claps her hands when she is pleased with herself or when someone does something nice for her.
  • If she hurts herself, she will come to us and make a pitiful face and point at the part of her body where it hurts, indicating that we should kiss and make it better. (Yeah, she learnt that from her brother)
  • Hannah can recognize faces in photographs.  When she sees our wedding photos on the wall, she will point and say, “Mommy!” and “De-deh!” :)
  • Hannah loves to help out when she can; when she’s ready to bathe, I let her throw her dirty clothes in the laundry bag
  • She can *answer* some simple questions using “Me!” e.g. when I ask, “Whose turn is it to bathe now?”, Hannah says, “Me!” :)

Food and Feeding

Hannah can eat most of our regular food, and she is very willing to try new things.  She’s still being breastfed, and sometimes she will also drink the boxed chocolate milk, fresh milk and Yakult. She can eat both rice and porridge, and even the pieces of chicken in her food. I’ve also tried giving her the porridge with some peanuts in it (which we thought caused her to break out in a rash last month) but this time round, she was all right.

Weight

11.2 kilos

Height/Length

81cm, roughly a head shorter than Ethan.

Teeth

8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with a few more teeth appearing at the back, possibly pramolars.

Hannah has me brushing her teeth every day.  We try to do it twice a day, morning and night.  And whenever she hears me saying, “Let’s go and brush our teeth!”, she’ll open her mouth, say “Aaah!” and point to her teeth.  Yeah, she’s cute like that. :)

I’m brushing her teeth with a fluoride-free kids’ toothpaste, and we started with gargle-training using a cup with boiled drinking water (just in case she swallows and drinks it).  After about a week, Hannah can now spit out the water (still working on the gargling), so sometimes I just use tap water.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah loves to stomp around and shake her booty to music.  Once we were in the mall and were walking past a music store which started to play some music.  She stopped and started dancing, then fell over backwards!
  • She prefers to sit on a chair for her meals and playtime.  We need to find somewhere to store our baby chair now.
  • At the restaurants, when she is supposed to be in a baby high chair, she will not sit still, preferring instead to walk around and explore the surrounding areas.
  • She could form the thumbs up sign with one hand a couple of months back.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah has learnt many new words: “Ko-ko” (for “Ethan Ko-ko”), “Bear”, “Beh” (bag), “Mau” (mouth), “No no no” (I’ve been saying this WAY too much!), “ball”, “boo” (for “book”), “daw” (for “dog”), “burr” (for “bird”), “nana” (for “banana”), “rai” (for “rice”), ”nai” (f0r “nice”), “up”, “down”, “pee pee”, “poo poo”, “eye” (for “ice”), “eye” (for “hi!) and “buh-bye”.
  • In Hokkien, she can say “moi” for “porridge” :)
  • She is also very expressive and giggles a lot.  She goes “mmmm” when she tastes something good.
  • She has managed to tell me when she wants to go “poo poo” a few times and we have successfully completed the exercise several times too.  Still working on the pee pee. :)
  • She’s very loving, and loves to hug us all.

Food and Feeding

Hannah eats almost everything we eat now, with the exception of herbal stuff which we don’t know the contents of and food high in sugar and salt content.  She eats porridge on weekdays and mostly rice and noodles during the weekends.

As for milk, Hannah is still on 100% breast milk, with a little sampling here and there of chocolate milk and fresh milk.

She took a little bit of porridge with some peanuts in it (she just took the porridge part), and the following day, she had some rashes on her body and face.  Not sure if she’s allergic to the peanuts though, but we’re keeping a close eye.

Here’s a video of Hannah calling Mommy, Daddy (Deh-deh), Ethan (Nah), Hannah (Annah!) and Ah Ma (Mah).

Teeth

8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with a few more teeth appearing at the back, possibly pramolars.  I’m cleaning her teeth daily with a special tooth tissue, but when those run out, I will start her teeth brusing regiment.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can RUN around.
  • She can do the down-dog (or downward facing dog) pose.
  • She can cross her fingers (both fingers together).

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah can point to several parts of her body when prompted, e.g. nose, hair, fingers (she’ll cross her fingers), tummy, cheeks.
  • Says “Poopoo” quite consistently, though often it’s just a false alarm or she just wants to sit on the throne.  But a few times when she said, “Poopoo” and gave that oh-so-familiar *straining* look, I’ve successfully taken her to the potty and she’d successfully poopoo-ed! :)
  • Calls “Mommy!” very clearly, Daddy is still “deh-deh!” and Ethan is either “Anah!” or *points finger at Ethan*
  • She knows her name is Hannah and can call herself “Hannah”.
  • Can parrot everything rather well, which resulted in her calling “Mah!” for “Ah-Mah” when my Mom was here for a visit.  Made Grandma pleased as pie. :)
  • Hannah is very friendly and is a very sociable little girl.  She will wave and say “Hi!” to anyone she meets, even strangers, especially so if the person is a child.  And then she will also happily wave “Bye!” when we are leaving.
  • Hannah can nod her head (for yes or affirmative answers) or shake her head vigorously (when she means no) and she does so meaningfully.
  • Can say “daw” for “dog”, “bur” for “bird”, among others.
  • She can scream her head off.

Food and Feeding

Hannah eats almost everything we eat now, with the exception of herbal stuff which we don’t know the contents of and food high in sugar and salt content.  She eats porridge on weekdays and mostly rice and noodles during the weekends.

As for milk, Hannah is still on 100% breast milk, with a little sampling here and there of chocolate milk and fresh milk.

sassygirl

Lately we’ve noticed that Hannah loves to walk around on tiptoe.  Even if she wasn’t reaching up for anything, she would toddle around the house tip-toeing all the way.

Could it be that she’s practising to move around in heels?  So soon??!!!

Weight

We haven’t weighed her lately, but she sure does feel at least 10.5 kilos!

Height/Length

We have not measured her height lately too, but she should be more than 77cm now, because she is able to reach higher and higher areas.

Teeth

8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with a few more teeth appearing at the back, possible pramolars.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah can tip toe around.
  • She loves to climb on top of everything: the couch, the naughty stool, the bed, the toy train!

Communication and Social Skills

  • Consistently waves and says “Bye!” in a very cutesy high-pitched tone.  And when she is ready to sleep, she will toddle to the room, turn, wave and say, “Bye!” :)
  • Asks for things she wants by using the word “Give!”.  She says “Gheee!!!” and extends her hands, opening and closing her palm, or she will point to the item she wants.
  • Can tell me when she has “poopoo”-ed.  She will point to her diaper and go, “Poopoo”.  Sometimes I will be in time and place her on the toilet bowl before she poos but often times it will be too late.  Good start, though.
  • Can point up and say “AAh!!” (for Up) and “Down”.
  • Point to nose, hair, tummy and teeth when prompted.
  • Says “Ah-per” for Diaper.
  • *Sings* Twinkle Twinkle Little Star to the rhythm, but without the words, just “ba-ba-ba”.  She loves doing the actions though.
  • Hannah can say “boo” for “book”: she says it when she wants us to read a book to her or if she wants to flip through a book.
  • She can say “Mamak” for food, and ask for a piece of bun, by saying, “Bah!” and pointing to the bun on the table.  Her favorite is the wholemeal potato buns.
  • She can understand “go kai kai” (she will walk to her stroller and wait for us to load her in), “go and wash hands” (she will walk to the bathroom and extend her hands to be washed), go to sleep (she will walk to the room, even though the door is closed, she will wait patiently for someone to open it for her), go bathe/take a shower (she will know how to go to her room and wait to be undressed, and then walk to the bathroom for her shower).
  • She understands “Go give Daddy/Mommy a hug” - she will walk/run to us and give us a loving hug :)

Food and Feeding

Hannah eats almost everything we eat now.  When I cook at home, she will have homecooked food and when we eat out, she will sample the food we eat.  I do try to minimize her salt and sugar intake though.

She drinks a lot of water, and so far is very open and willing to try new foods.

As for milk, Hannah is still on 100% breast milk.  However, there were times when we were out for six hours plus straight, and she didn’t need any milk, so perhaps I will start her on Pediasure or fresh milk soon, just to supplement her milk intake.

She loves chicken rice, chicken, Milo, Cheerios, potato bread, koay teow, kiwi and banana, just to name a few :)

scissors

I knew this day would come, but it came a little faster than I had expected.  Using the scissors is very important fine motor skill to master, especially for toddlers, and Ethan is now old enough to learn and perfect that skill.

He has been showing a very keen interest in mastering the scissors, so I try to coach and guide him as best as I can.  I got him a scissor-cutting book with different shapes and lines to cut, and of course, a pair of safety scissors. The first pair of scissors we got for Ethan was way too blunt.  It did not have any steel blades, only plastic edges.  And this became very frustrating to use.  So a few days ago, I spotted a pair of scissors with steel blades but BLUNT points, and the packaging mentioned that it was recommended for children aged 4 and above.  Perfect, I thought.

And Ethan has been happily using this pair since.

Among the *skills* I am emphasizing are:

  • How to hold the scissors (point blades down when not in use)
  • How to pass the scissors to another person (i.e. close the blades, hold the blades and pass the handles to someone)
  • Turn the paper, NOT the scissors
  • Alternative ways to cut shapes

We try to cut out shapes and lines a page a day, but we can only indulge in this when Hannah is asleep.  Hehehe…

Hannah is VERY intuitive.

Ethan recently started playing a game where he would hide and scream “Surprise!!” when Daddy walks in the door in the evenings.

After about two times of doing this routine, Hannah has picked up this *game* too.

When we hide ourselves, Hannah would put a finger to her mouth, indicating “Shhhhhh…..!!!”  (see how she picked it up from her big brother?)

shhhhh1

shhhhh2

and when we yell “Surprise!!”, Hannah raises her arms in the air and screams out loud too!

surprise

What follows after that is the welcoming committee greeting of hugging their Daddy as he comes in the door…. (Awwwwww….)

Weight

10.3 kilos +

Height/Length

About 76-77 cm…or maybe more.

Teeth

8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with a few more teeth appearing at the back, possible pramolars.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah is walking around very quickly now, and sometimes picks up her step and starts running a little.
  • She can climb up the couch and the bed, sits there unaided and then climb down again, feet and butt first.  I still want to monitor her when she does that because I’m still wary that sometimes she does stand up on the couch/bed and appears to want to *walk off*.
  • Likes to *walk around* in the bathroom when taking her shower.
  • Loves to *hang on* to my legs, even when I am walking.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah can imitate sounds that are being made, eg. “lalalala..”, “eh…” etc
  • Says “Bar-bee” to almost anything, but more often than not, in reference to soft toys and pictures of animals.
  • She can *tell* us what she wants to do or where she wants to go.  For example, when she wants to sleep, she will walk to the room and point at the closed door.
  • Smiles cheekily when someone holds a camera.
  • Screams aloud when excited, frustrated or angry.
  • Shows affection by kissing my cheeks.  Also, when Daddy comes home, she screams delightedly and runs to give him a hug. awwww…..
  • Can point to nose, hair and tummy when asked.  Not 100% consistent but we are working on it.
  • Loves to flip through books.
  • Sometimes refers to herself by saying “Nana”.

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and is still loving every bit of her porridge!  She takes a bit of our every day foods, and is very willing to try new things.  I try to give her foods which are low in salt and sugar though, but I love it that her diet is more varied now.  In fact, our girl will *ask* to be fed new things even though she’s not allowed to have it yet, e.g. when I’m eating ice cream, she will come very close to me and open her mouth.

New foods she has been introduced to include:

  • Wanton noodles (from Old Town coffee shop)
  • Chopped celery (in chicken soup)
  • Beef balls (from spaghetti in Italiannies)
  • Beef stew (from Du Viet)
  • Pasta with tomato pasta sauce
  • Steamed Fish balls (dim sum) - she had a slight rash on her chest after this, so I’ll probably retry this sometime later.
  • Jiu hoo char with lettuce leaves (from Hainan)
  • Tau-ewe-bak (little bit)
  • Hainanese chicken rice
  • Cheerios

We will probably stop cooking porridge for her during weekends now that she can take almost the same food as we do. :)

worldcupmania

Everyone’s high on World Cup Mania nowadays…yes, even Ethan!  And when the newspapers published a pullout with pictures of the 32 teams, Ethan was VERY excited and wanted to learn how to say the names of all the countries.  He kept the pullout and has been learning the names of the countries ever since.  His favorites are Brazil and South Africa (because the team’s jerseys are yellow).

And now, he can proudly name them all! (I love the way he pronounces “Ivory Coast” :))

And you know what?  It’s not only from memory that he can name the countries!  Ethan can really read…here he is, reading from our World Cup Guide magazine.

So is this an indication of interest in:

A: Sports
B: World Geography
C: Reading
D: All of the above :)

When Hannah was being treated in the hospital for her pneumonia a month and a half ago, the pediatrician took a sample of her blood for testing too.  The results showed that her red blood cells were a little bit on the pinkish (i.e. not red as they should be) and also slightly smaller than usual.  Further tests showed a decreased level of Serum Ferritin (iron) in the blood (only 10ug/dl when the acceptable range is 37-145ug/dl for females).

Hannah’s test results indicated either a Thalassemic condition or iron-deficiency anemia.

Her doctor asked if either Pete or I had any history of Thalassemia, but since we are both blood donors, it is highly unlikely that we are Thalassemic or even carriers.  So it became apparent that Hannah was most probably deficient in iron.  This could happen because she is exclusively breastfed, and might not have sufficient iron in her solid food intake.  Exclusively breastfed babies receive sufficient iron from their mother’s breastmilk from birth till about 6 months of age, after which the iron levels in the milk could drop a little; and if other food sources do not provide adequate amounts of iron in the diet, the child might be deficient in iron. (Source: Ask Dr Sears)

Because iron-deficiency in toddlers/infants from birth till 3 years needs to be addressed immediately, Hannah’s pediatrician prescribed an oral iron therapy solution to be taken for 3 months.  Hannah was to take 2.5ml of Maltofer twice a day for 3 months, after which her iron levels will be retested.  In addition, doc also prescribed a Multivitamin syrup to improve her appetite.

irontherapy

It has been 1.5 months now, and I have to say it’s really working.  Hannah, whom we thought was already very active pre-iron-therapy treatment, is now MORE active and MORE vocal than ever.  Her appetite has increased by leaps and bounds and she loves trying different types of food.  We’ve also been giving her lots of iron-rich foods like chicken liver, beef, pasta, tomatoes, bread, etc just to boost the iron levels.

I thank God that feeding her the iron therapy and multivitamin is not stressful, because she is very cooperative and I simply use the syringes to administer both the iron and multivitamin.  Plus, because she is on an iron supplement, it is important for her to drink lots of water to prevent constipation, and Hannah has also been a very good girl in gulping down water. :)

I can’t wait for the iron therapy to end and the test results to show a favorable level of iron in Hannah’s blood come the end of three months.  Meanwhile we’ll have to deal with *slightly more pungent* poopoo for a few more weeks! :P

hannah2

Hannah’s favorite word (besides “Mommy”) has got to be “Bar-beee!”  She is definitely NOT referring to the doll of a similar sounding name, that’s for sure.

When she opens a book, she will point at the pictures and say, “Bar-beee!   Bar-beee!”

When she hears a dog barking, she’ll laugh and say, “Bar-bee!”

When she sees a bird flying, she’ll point and scream, “Bar-bee!!”

She even points at our photographs at home and goes, “Bar-beeee! Bar-beeee!!!”

All the soft toys and animals are “Bar-beee!” to her.

I know she will soon outgrow this phase when she adds more words to her vocabulary, but right now sometimes it is just so amusing to hear her go, “Bar-beee!” and he brother *correcting* her, “Not Bar-beeee, Hannah…that’s an apple!” LOL

Last weekend we took a drive down to KL.  It was a 3-day weekend, so we got to spend 2 nights in KL.

For a long time now, when Hannah rides in the car, she has been turning her head to see what’s in front.  Hannah was still in the infant car seat which was rear-facing, and seeing that she is so curious about “what’s in front” (plus the fact that she LOVES being in a forward-facing stroller), we figured it was high time she was *upgraded* to her front-facing car seat.

Both Ethan and Hannah looked SO adorable in their matching car seats.  Here they are, all buckled up and ready to go! :)

carseat1

And yes, they both have matching CHEEKY grins too.  I guess it’s hereditary.. :P

carseat2

carseat3

It was a rather relaxing trip, and we didn’t really want to rush around everywhere.  But we did manage to stop by 1-Utama for lunch and a quick walkaround.  We rented a stroller for Hannah, and Ethan wanted something to ride in too, so in the end, he got to ride in on of the kiddie firetrucks.  I tell you, that firetruck was a BIG HIT with both his cousins, Collin and Jonathan! :)

firetruck

On the day we were to leave for Penang, we decided to go for a short dip in the swimming pool in Pauline KorKor’s condo.  Believe it or not, it was Hannah’s first time ever in a swimming pool, and boy, was she excited!  Ethan was of course, the eager beaver, and he slid into the pool all by himself!

kltrip1

For someone who was having a first-time experience in the pool, Hannah really enjoyed herself, and she didn’t show a single sign of fear.

kltrip2

kltrip3

Ethan was even strong enough to climb OUT of the pool on his own!

kltrip4

We really had an awesome time in the pool.  I did two laps, and Pete did one (shortened by the fact that he hurt his forehead on the wall of the pool…OUCH).

Ethan told me later, “Mommy, I had a great time in the swimming pool.  Did you have a good time, too?”

Of course I did, baby.  :)

Spending My Time QP from Mystique Designs
Harvest Spice alphas  from Shabby Princess Designs
Elegant word art (angel eyes) from Bethany

Weight

10.3 kilos (she appears to be a little bit thinner now, but taller)

Height/Length

About 76-77 cm.

Teeth

6 incisors (4 top and 2 bottom), 2 more teeth appearing at the bottom (probably incisors), and 2 pramolars appearing at the bottom too.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah is very steady in her walking now and sometimes, I do realize she is picking up enough speed to start running.
  • She can climb up the couch by using her upper body strength to hoist her butt up, first putting one leg up and then pulling the other leg up.
  • She is very inquisitive and wants to touch everything and open every drawer or anything that has a handle.  Did I mention she can open the fridge door all on her own now?!!
  • She can perform the “fingers crossed” manoeuvre, on both hands.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah is a very sociable baby, and does not mind being around anybody.
  • Words she uses on an every day basis are “Mamak” (when she wants food), “Baby” (when she points at pictures - don’t ask me why), and my personal favorite: “Mommy!!!”  It’s only fair that she calls Mommy first before Daddy, given that Ethan called Daddy first.  Anyway, Daddy to her now is still either “Dedek” or “Baba” :)
  • Hannah can say “A” and “E”, which sometimes frustrates her brother, who wants her to say the entire alphabet! :P
  • She knows how to lift my shirt/top when she wants milk.
  • Hannah is able to imitate/parrot the people around her.  We recently noticed she has been clicking her tongue, and were curious as to how she might have picked that up.  Then she said something like, “Baby, Baby! *click click click*” ; Ah, so she picked that up from strangers who talk to her that way! LOL
  • Hannah can shake her head and nod her head.  Of course when she nods, her whole body moves too!  I don’t think she fully comprehends the meaning of shaking and nodding yet, but it’s a whole lot of fun when I ask her, “Hannah, do you want more porridge?” and she either shakes or nods. :)

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and is still loving every bit of her porridge!  She can finish quite a lot now, and eats at an amazing pace!  I’ve started giving her a little bit of our every day foods, just so she can soon join us at the dining table too :)

New foods she has been introduced to include:

  • Organic Brown Rice Crunch snack
  • French beans (chopped finely and added to porridge)
  • The white part of Char Siew Pau
  • Siew Mai dumplings, containing chicken and shrimp (she loves this!)
  • Pasta (spaghetti and spiral pasta(fusilli))
  • Beef
  • Prawn Fritters (from Mama’s restaurant)
  • Chicken liver

Ethan has been picking up Chinese in school (like a sponge, I might add!), because his school employs a dual-language approach.  We’re happy he is learning a new language, though we aren’t forcing it on him.  And I am quite certain he will soon be speaking WAY more Chinese (Mandarin) than me!

Lately he has been picking up the Chinese words for some basic shapes.  I don’t know if his pronunciation is accurate, but he certainly sounds adorable saying it!

First he learnt how to say three shapes:

And now, he can say SIX shapes!  Way to go, Ethan! :)

phone2

Hannah is beginning to role-play a lot these days.  She started picking up the comb and *combing* her hair a few months ago, and just lately, she began holding my cellphone to her ear, as if she was talking to someone.

I wonder if this is a sign of things to come…..hmmm….

Teeth

6 incisors (4 top and 2 bottom), 2 more teeth appearing at the bottom (not sure if they are incisors or canines), and I can also see 2 pramolars appearing at the bottom too.  No wonder Hannah has been having sleepless nights for a few weeks now!

Motor Skills

  • Can walk VERY fast all around now, and I can see she will start running very very soon.
  • She’s able to bend over and pick up objects very steadily and then return to standing position.
  • Can remove both her sandals, by first unfastening the velcro straps and then removing the sandals.  We have to now remove her sandals when she is riding in the car, just so she doesn’t remove them and put them in her mouth or somethin’.
  • Can unfasten the velcro tabs on her diaper on her own.  She hasn’t quite mastered the snaps on the snap-style diapers yet, so we are safe for now.  But when I put her on the velcro diapers, I need to remember to put on a pair of shorts or skirt for her, otherwise she’ll remove the diapers on her own!
  • Loves to hug my legs, and will cling on for dear life, even though I start to walk around.
  • Hannah takes *showers* now and not *baths* - yep, she doesn’t want to be in the bath tub and prefers to stand while being showered.  I still need to support her in case she slips though.
  • She’s also learning how to play with the shape sorter, sometimes under the tutelage of big brother Ethan.
  • Hannah loves music and loves to dance to music, and will tap her leg while standing and sometimes shakes her booty too! :)

Communication and Social Skills

  • Asks for food by saying “Mamak” (no relation to the mamak stall, by the way).  We think she is saying “Mum mum” though.
  • Can very very surely recognize her own name when being called.
  • Can understand simple instructions and respond to verbal requests, like:
    • “Come here, Hannah” (she’ll turn and come over to me)
    • “No” (she’ll turn around and check to see if she should really NOT be doing what she is about to do)
    • “Stop” (she’ll stop whatever she is doing…unless she is totally engrossed)
    • “Look Up!” (she’ll look up - I ask her to look up when I am giving her her shower and I want to clean her neck!)
    • “Buh bye!” (waves goodbye)
    • “Flying kiss” (she’ll put her hand to her mouth to give a flying kiss)
  • I thought I heard her saying “baby” and also something like “eh-fer” (for elephant).

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and is still loving every bit of her porridge!  She can finish quite a lot now, and eats at an amazing pace!

New foods she has been introduced to include:

  • Homemade wholemeal bread
  • Kiwi fruit
  • White bread (which she loves!)
  • Tofu
  • Foo Kui chye
  • Dried scallops, cooked with her porridge
  • Regular rice mixed into her porridge

He wants me to call him a “big boy” now, instead of “baby”. :P

I have not been documenting all of Ethan’s achievements thus far, more so because there have been so many, that they have surpassed my ability to pen them down.  He amazes us every day with his vocal prowess and intelligence, and it is hard to believe that he was once a shy guy.

  • Ethan now knows all the months of the year, from January to December, in order, and he even knows the numerical equivalent of it; e.g. October = 10th month of the year, June  = 6th month of the year.
  • He knows the days of the week in order, and can even sing them!
  • He knows how old Daddy and Mommy are.  Sometimes he says my age out LOUD in public! :P
  • He can say his name in Chinese (Mandarin), and he even knows Daddy’s name, Mommy’s name and Hannah’s name in Chinese.  Sometimes he calls us by our FULL Chinese name.
  • He can name some of his body parts in Mandarin: hair, ear, eyes, mouth, hands.
  • He can perform addition using his fingers.  Sometimes he asks to “borrow” our fingers and toes too! :)
  • When he is in a good mood, he will guide Hannah in playing with her toys. “Here Hannah…put this triangle here.  Yes!  Good job, Hannah!”
  • Spontaneously says, “I love you Mommy!” or “I miss you Daddy!”

He may be a big boy, but he still looks like an angel when he sleeps… :)

Weight

10.1 kilos, weighed in at the doc’s during her one-year old well-child checkup.

Height/Length

76 cm, as measured at the doc’s too.

Teeth

4 incisors (2 top and 2 bottom).  Next 2 top incisors are becoming more prominent, and the next 2 bottom incisors are also making their appearance.

Motor Skills

  • Prefers to walk around, albeit in a quite a *scary* manner, because she does sometimes look like she will fall.  However, Hannah most of the time manages to balance herself quite well, and can move around rather quickly while walking now.
  • Can cross her fingers (middle finger on top of index finger).
  • Very inquisitive and curious and keeps exploring things.  Her pincer’s grip is very advanced and she can pick up even minute things from the floor.  It’s a good thing too, because it forces me to keep the floor as clean as possible.
  • Attempts to climb up the couch by lifting her legs.
  • Can stand on tip toe for a while.
  • Likes to climb out from her bath tub and stand up while I bathe her.  I have also started using the shower to bathe her.  Soon, I suppose we can do without the tub.
  • Can wriggle her arm out from under her seat belt a la Tarzan style, just like her brother did last time.  And she can even do it both arms!

Communication and Social Skills

  • Very consistently says “Mameh” or “Momma”, sometimes “Mommy”!  Says “Deh-deh” for Daddy, very consistently too.  Says “Yah”…and recently she said, “PAPAYA” :)
  • Can point to fish in the fish tank when asked “Where’s the fish?”
  • Can understand simple instructions like, “Give the block to Ethan”, or “Give Mommy the toy”.  I love the way she smiles as she extends her hand with the toy.  Sometimes though, she teases us by handing us the toy and then NOT giving it to us!
  • Throws and tantrum and screams out loud when somebody takes her toy away.
  • Has a really good sense of humor and laughs at almost anything, especially what her brother does.

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and is loving every bit of her porridge!  She can finish quite a lot now, and eats at an amazing pace!

New foods she has been introduced to include:

  • Cod fish
  • Pork
  • Watercress (I made watercress soup without the salt and fed her with it)
  • “Kai Lan”
  • Egg yolk
  • Wolfberries (”Kei Chi”)

Hannah LOVES to drink water.  When I ask her if she wants to drink water, her face will light up, and when she sees me getting her purple cup and pouring water into it, she will grin excitedly.

She can also drink a little bit from a straw tumbler now.  When we bought her her first straw tumbler, she didn’t know how to drink from it, but then I tried putting a regular straw into a small cup and from then on, she figured out how to do it.  Besides, she has her big brother giving her all the encouragement.

During the 3-day weekend before Hannah’s actual birthday on March 2nd, we made a trip down south to have a birthday celebration for Hannah.  Our trip was also to celebrate the kid’s Pauline Kor-Kor’s housewarming.

Both of Hannah’s grandparents made the trip to KL for her first birthday celebration, and we are really happy and honored that they could come :)

We also ordered full moon gift packs for everyone, because during Hannah’s full moon last year in the US, we didn’t have those full moon delicacies then.  So we decided to have them for her first birthday instead.

bday-kl2

The birthday lunch was at Italiannies The Gardens, and everyone arrived on time..good thing too, because we were all really hungry then.  Hannah also wasted no time in checking out the menu…

bday-kl3

Unfortunately though, she pulled the menu from the table too quickly and the porcelain plate that was on top of the menu went crashing to the floor!

bday-kl4

(Pssst….yes, that’s the Coach Resort I was carrying :))

We took the opportunity to take a few pictures with the birthday girl before our food came.  Here’s Hannah with her 2 grandmas.

bday-kl5

Hannah wasn’t really herself though, and felt a little listless and tired, because the poor dear was still coughing and had thrown up a couple of times the night before due to the forceful coughing.

Ethan, though, was not interested in taking photos at all.  Instead, he preferred to fill his rumbling tummy first….with BREAD!!!!

bday-kl6

Notice how he painstakingly peeled off the crusts…

bday-kl7

He almost finished our entire plate of bread slices, and then he still had space in his tummy for his spaghetti marinara.

 bday-kl81

Meanwhile, Hannah enjoyed herself being carried by Ah Ma and Ah Kong…doesn’t she look comfy? :)

bday-kl9

She enjoyed herself till she fell asleep!  Look at her comfortably getting her beauty sleep in the stroller we rented from Midvalley.

 bday-kl10

Meanwhile, the kids were all going hyper, running around and taking pictures everywhere…

bday-kl11

bday-kl121

…and besides we needed to buy some time to get the birthday girl all woken up and fresh for the cake-cutting.

bday-kl13

I ordered this adorable birthday cake from Swee San.  I wanted the elephant at the top because Hannah really LOVES elephants.  When she takes her bath, she absolutely needs to hold and play with her elephant bath toy.  If I offer her something else, she would flatly refuse it.

Love the details on the side of the cake too.  It’s a marble cake with fondant all over.

bday-kl15

Ethan very willingly volunteered his services to *help* Hannah blow the candle on the cake, while Hannah looked on in confusion. :P

bday-kl14

The cake was rich and absolutely delicious, but because Hannah had not been introduced to eggs, butter and other stuff in the cake yet, I baked her her own special cake, just like I did for Ethan’s first birthday last time.

bday-kl16

This one’s a carrot, banana and pumpkin cake, without milk, eggs, butter and sugar.  First, she hesitated when I fed her a slice…then she opened her mouth and took a bite…

 bday-kl162

bday-kl17

…and then she wanted to feed herself…

bday-kl18

bday-kl19

Looks like it’s a HIT, baby! :)

bday-kl20

After a very fulfilling lunch, we headed back to Pauline Kor Kor’s condo to open the birthday presents.  Again, Ethan had volunteered to help Hannah open the presents.

bday-kl21

The initial plan was to allow Hannah to choose the present she wanted to open and then Ethan would help her open them.  But you know kids, there’s bound to be some grabbing involved.  And the birthday girl was also very determined to get her way!

bday-kl22

Hannah received lots of lovely gifts, among them a beautiful crocheted dress from her Ipoh Ah Ma and Ah Kong.  The dress is handmade with love from Ah Ma.  We asked Ethan to display the dress.

bday-kl23

…and Hannah to pose in it…

bday-kl28

Ethan himself also gave his little sister a present.  He knows she loves elephants, so he gave her this:

bday-kl24

Here are some of the PINK vehicles Hannah received too.  We got them in pink to deter the boys from playing with Hannah’s toys….errr…don’t think it worked…

All in all, a very enjoyable and memorable birthday celebration.  Happy birthday little Hannah! :)

birthday1

A year has passed since you came into our lives
A year since you, our bundle of joy, arrived
You gave us adorable smiles and cutesy giggles
Happy happy birthday, my sweet darling little girl!

On Hannah’s birthday, we decided to take the kids out for a treat.  Pete took the day off and after we picked Ethan up from school, we headed over to Gurney Plaza.  Incidentally, we also took Ethan to Gurney Plaza on his first birthday. :)

We ended up having lunch at Chili’s…it had a been a long while since we ate there and we wanted to check to see if they had improved since then.

Ethan of course enjoyed himself tremendously.  He couldn’t decide between the spaghetti and the hot dog, so he ordered both…and also had free flow ice lemon tea…which prompted a few visits to the loo…haha.

birthday2

Hannah had some home-cooked porridge and was very well-behaved indeed.

birthday3

birthday4

birthday5

Hannah enjoyed her rusk while we dug in to our meal….

…and sometimes she did her upside-down stunt…

birthday6

…and at other times, the birthday girl was entertained by her brother’s funny antics…

birthday7

We walked around Gurney Plaza a bit after our hearty meal, stopping at some of our favorite stores, including Ethan’s favorite Toys R Us (which he noticed a mile away!).

Oh, and here’s another shot of Hannah doing her infamous upside-down pose again….this time, a close-up:

birthday8

Happy birthday Hannah!  Sure beats a day at the office anytime, eh Daddy?

  • Throw things and then closes her eyes in anticipation of the loud sound it makes.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Says “Mameh”, “Mamma”, Dadeh”, “Baba”, “Mamba”.
  • Imitates and responds in a smiliar fashion when we “blow” on her tummy.
  • Loves the remote, and will do whatever she can to get a hold of it.
  • Can make “pathetic”-looking faces just so we’ll feel sorry and carry her.
  • Can “manipulate” us by purposely knocking her head on the wall when she’s in the cot, and then crying so we’ll pick her up.

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and also LOVES drinking water from a regular cup.  Sometimes I have had to pry her hands from the cup!

New foods she has been introduced to include:

  • Heinz Teething rusks, which she absolutely LOVES.
  • Red dates (cooked with porridge)
  • Organic baby oats (mixed into porridge and sometimes served just on its own with water)
  • Regular fragrant rice
  • Fish (Jade perch)

When it’s time for her porrdige, she will smile and look very happy.  Then, if she has the mood to eat, she will open her mouth eagerly and wait for me to feed her.  Sometimes if I am a little slow in feeding her, she will pull my arm or shirt!

Ethan’s birthday culminated in a celebration amongst relatives.  We decided to have a buffet lunch at the E&O Hotel, and it goes without saying that Ethan was very much looking forward to this celebration.

See, he even willingly posed for a nice shot before we left for the hotel.

… and then, he started being his CHEEKY self again.

I think the part Ethan enjoyed most about the birthday lunch was the chocolate stuff: chocolate-covered marshmallows from the fondue station, chocolate ice cream, chocolate cake….

..and the part that Hannah enjoyed the most was the teething rusk she was chewing on.  She even fell asleep while holding it!

…and woke up for a moment to give it a few more chomps, then she was off to dreamland again….Even after she awoke, and her Ah Ma was carrying her, she was still holding the rusk.

Such “devotion” can only be admired. :)

So anyway, after our very filling lunch, we all adjourned back to our home to cut the birthday cake and to open the presents.  After three days of preparation, I was very pleased to unveil the birthday cake Ethan had requested for.   On the 1st day I made the cream cheese frosting and chilled it, on the 2nd day I baked the cake, and the night before Ethan’s birthday, I relived my childhood playing with *edible play-doh* a.k.a. fondant.

After he had cut his Thomas cake in school a few days back, I had asked him if he liked the cake, and his reply was, “Yes…” and then after that he said, “Where’s my Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake, Mommy?”

I had told him the Mickey Mouse Clubhouse cake was gonna be for his home celebration.  Haha.

err….you see that small DENT on the lower left of the cake?  That was caused by Mickey having the first taste of it; you can see his nose is a little bit blue… :P

I chose to make the nutritious and rich carrot cake with cream cheese frosting I had tried a few weeks back.

And his expression when he saw the cake was just priceless. :)

The birthday boy then continued opening all his presents, including the HUGE present from Daddy, Mommy and Hannah.  I had to enlist the help of one of my neighbors to help store it first lest Ethan sees it in our home and spoil the surprise.

He tore open the wrapper, and…..immediately got on it!

…and wouldn’t get down!  It was a tricycle in his favorite color: YELLOW.  He had wanted one since a few weeks before we left the US, so we figured it was high time we got him one now.

Look….all the pictures we took with him after that were of him on the trike.

Ain’t it weird that you can’t see the rest of  my body in the photo above?

…and one with both his grandmas…

Ethan definitely had a LOT of fun on his birthday.  He proudly announces he is FOUR years old now, and that he can play toys that are meant for “FOUR AND ABOVE”.

He even asked me for more presents to open… :)

Happy birthday, dearest Ethan Boy! :)

Two days before Ethan’s birthday, we ended up having dinner at Friday’s.  The birthday boy had requested for spaghetti…yes, he said “PLEASE…???” :)

While Ethan and Daddy went to the loo, I inquired on whether the folks at Friday’s could sing a birthday song for Ethan that night.  I knew he loves to blow out the candle, and he loves cake, so we agreed to have them sing for him.

After our dinner, a group of Friday servers came over and Ethan was asked to stand on the chair.  Of course, he willingly did it.

Ethan looked very overwhelmed but he was very happy when they started singing, not in the least bit perturbed by the loud voices.

And after blowing out the candle, he dug in to the slice of chocolate cake, finishing every single morsel.

It was the perfect end to a little family celebration.  And even though he wasn’t yet officially 4 years old then, Ethan proudly announced that he was! :)

A few months before his birthday, I had already discussed with Ethan that he was gonna have a small celebration in school with his friends and another one at home.  And when asked what birthday cake he would like for his birthday celebration in school, he had replied that he wanted a Thomas the Train birthday cake.  And because his favorite number is 2, he also wanted the train with the number 2 to be on the cake, i.e. Rheneas.

I could not find a picture of Thomas with Rheneas, so I managed to coax him into agreeing to have a cake with Thomas, James and Percy on it.  And that’s how I ended up ordering this cake:

I thought the bakery did a great job and the cake looked fantastic…well, as long as Ethan likes it :)

The celebration in school began around 10:10a.m. (because I was a little bit late arriving with the cake), and Ethan was given the honor of placing the FOUR birthday candles on his cake.

Then we all sang the birthday song, in English and Mandarin, and Ethan promptly did a great job in blowing out all the four candles.

He also cut the cake three times! LOL

I had also prepared party packs for Ethan to give out to his friends.  In line with the Thomas and Friends theme, I had wanted to get Thomas party bags, but alas, I had been unsuccessful.  I also enlisted the help of friends and relatives (you know who you are, thank you very much!) to help me look for them in KL and Ipoh, but they were all sold out.

In the end, I decided to make simple party packs myself in the form of Thomas paper bags.

In addition to being in *theme* with the event, paper bags were also environmentally friendly as opposed to plastic. :)

I also *converted* some Winnie the Pooh yoyos into Thomas yoyos, as one of the party favors.

It caused me several late nights, but it was well worth it.  Ethan had fun and so did I! :)

I knew the moment would come soon.

Any day now, I told myself.

And I was right… :)

Here’s Hannah, with her newfound confidence at 10 months old! Ta-daaaa…!!!!!!

Weight

Did not measure but should be close to 10 kilos now.

Height/Length

Getting taller and taller!

Teeth

4 incisors (2 top and 2 bottom)

Motor Skills

  • Stands unsupported for longer periods of time, sometimes smiling and raising hands in jubilation, a la “Look Ma, no hands!” pose
  • Able to take one step and then sits down on butt :P
  • Can pull herself up from seated position to standing and then can very slowly, unsupported, lower herself down again.
  • Able to squat.
  • Unlike her brother, Hannah has the ticklish massage feeling; when I give her her body massage after her night bath, she will giggle uncontrollably.
  • Loves to roll around the bed with her brother.
  • Loves to roll around on the bed, suddenly sit up and then very quickly make herself fall backwards with a big PLOP!
  • Able to climb up stairs (shudder!).
  • Is always trying to *escape* from diaper changes.  I’m running out of toys for her to hold when she gets changed!
  • Can shape her fingers into numbers 1 (pointing position), 2, 4 and 5!

Communication and Social Skills

  • Can sometimes point to her nose when I ask her, “Where is your nose, Hannah?”
  • Can respond to “Hands up” instructions when I am undressing her.
  • Stops whatever she is doing when we say, “No Hannah!”.  She will look at us, and then sometimes she will stop completely or continue doing it (as if to test us) :P
  • Voluntarily claps her hands when she hears some nice music.  Can respond to verbal instructions to clap her hands, in English and Mandarin.
  • Blabbering and raspberry-blowing continues.
  • Is able to imitate movements. e.g. when we point at something, she will also point at the same thing.
  • Hannah is very attached to us, especially to me.  She will cry out when I leave the room, and stop crying when I reassure her.
  • Is fascinated when anyone (Ethan, especially) recites numbers.

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and is having her solids for 2 meals a day now (if I can help it).  Thanks to the fabulous invention of the slow cooker, I am now able to cook her porridge before I head for bed, and have the porridge ready for her by lunch time the next day.  Hannah normally eats more during lunch time.

New foods she has been introduced to include:

  • Banana
  • Bayam (Heng chye) , of which she didn’t really like
  • Millet
  • Brocolli
  • …and just a few days ago, CHICKEN!

She appears to love her chicken porridge a LOT!  And of course, she loves papaya too!

I don’t puree food anymore, not even the chicken.  I just steam it and mince it into tiny pieces and shreds and then freeze it into cubes.  And then I use them in her porridge.  Little Miss Bulat loves it! :)

Oh, and she drinks her water directly from a regular cup (the purple one with her name on it) - of course I have hold the cup for her!

Ethan is a natural with numbers.  He picked up counting on his own, without our prodding or pushing.  He can count to a hundred very well now, but I was totally surprised when he started counting in Chinese one day when I was out with him.

He is exposed to both English and Mandarin in school, as he has two teachers: one for English and one for Mandarin.  And so by the by, he has also managed to pick up counting in Mandarin too, although to us, it sounds rather *slangy”, if you know what I mean… :)

Weight

Did not measure but should be close to 10 kilos now.

Height/Length

Getting taller and taller!

Teeth

2 bottom incisors, and we can see the *whites* of 2 more at the top!  She is a perfect candidate to sing the song, “All I want for Christmas is my two front teeth!”

Motor Skills

  • Crawling everywhere
  • Cruising everywhere, but at a slightly slower pace compared to crawling.
  • Slowly beginning to *let go* of the support she uses to stand.
  • Likes to arch her back upside down when being carried.
  • Can raise one index finger as if in pointing, and sometimes 2 fingers too!

Communication and Social Skills

  • Calling “Mommy” more consistently. :)
  • Can clap her hands.  Can clap her hands when being asked to verbally, and also if we show her by action.
  • Loves playing with all of Ethan’s toys.
  • Smiles a LOT - has a very cute dimple to boot!

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and is taking a little bit of solids too.  New foods she has been introduced to include:

  • Ground red rice porridge
  • Spinach
  • Pumpkin
  • Japanese sweet potato
  • Papaya

Finally, just slightly after 9 months, she uttered the word that has the ability to wrap me around her little adorable fingers.

Last night, Hannah awoke, let out a “come carry me” cry, stood up in her cot, faced me and said, “Mameh….!”

She’s currently under the tutelage of her big brother to perfect the pronunciation, and from the looks of it, it will certainly be “Mommy” really soon.

…can we say that that’s officially her first word? :)

Last weekend, we visited a friend and coincidentally there was also another baby at the house.  I was asked how old Hannah is, and when I said “8 months”, there were gasps all around.  Turns out the other baby is close to a year old, but Hannah looked a wee bit bigger than the baby.

Weight

Did not measure but should be close to 10 kilos now.

Height/Length

Getting taller and taller!

Teeth (yup, she has some growing!)

2 bottom incisors, and 2 more at the top at sprouting, I believe!

Motor Skills

  • Can crawl really well now.
  • Attempting to cruise.
  • Loves to hold on to things for support and stands up, e.g. the couch side, cot side, wooden toy, Ethan’s toy train…you get the idea…
  • Casting (throwing) of objects has started.
  • Getting harder and harder to bathe her because she will want to stand up or crawl out of the bathtub!

Communication and Social Skills

  • She sometimes responds/*talks back* to her brother when he *scolds* her or takes her toys away.
  • More pronounced verbalization of sounds.  I’m hoping she’ll call “Mommy” any day now :)
  • Can wave hi and bye.  I’ve also caught her waving to her reflection in the mirror.
  • Can give a high 5, well…more like a low 5.  I offer her my palm and she’ll high/low 5 it! :)
  • She is usually independent enough to play on her own, provided there is someone around in sight.  Will cry if she does not see anyone around.
  • Hannah has learnt the art of smiling into the camera when prompted. :)

Food and Feeding

She’s on Mommy’s milk 100% and is taking a little bit of solids too.  She has a solid meal once a day in the evenings, but it is more for tasting rather than making her full. She takes a combination of any of the following now:

  • Rice cereal + EBM
  • Pureed pear
  • Pureed apple
  • Pureed carrot
  • Pureed potato
  • A little bit of water.

Her favorite right now is Pureed carrot + rice cereal + EBM.  I normally add some rice cereal and EBM to the fruit/vegetable purees to make it creamier in texture.

Last week, Ethan surprised us yet again with another one of his newfound abilities: Coloring INSIDE the lines.  I bet he must have picked this up from school, because we never pruposely force him to color inside the lines.  I prefer to allow him free reign of how to express himself artistically.  And look how handsomely that has paid off!

I’m so proud of my boy, and can’t believe how much he has grown up! :)

Last Saturday, October 17 2009, little Hannah was baptized in church, in a simple meaningful ceremony.  She didn’t really put up a fuss at all, although at times it was hard to keep her hands away from everything; from grabbing the book, from grabbing my hair, my pendant, and from being ever-so-wriggly!

In fact, she was so active that I could not position her properly for the holy water to be poured over her head.  This here is my attempt…

Hannah was curious to see what was going on…

I had to pass her to Daddy, the expert…and that also, some of the water entered her eyes!

Of course, there was the compulsory family photo after the end of the ceremony,…errr… positions all a bit out, but everyone was there nevertheless. (baby in front is NOT Hannah…that’s Phoebe, her cousin. LOL… Hannah too busy with *other* things at the back)

I also wanted a family photo of just the 4 of us.  We didn’t have many of those, but I discovered that it was becoming increasingly difficult to get a proper shot.

Hannah’s baptism of course calls for a reason to fill our tummies…and fill them we did, at Mama’s… No photos of the food, sorry! :P

With 2 kids to attend to, it’s rather impossible to whip out the camera, set the macro and focus…but trust me when I say the food was definitely scrumptious!  To quote Ethan, “Smells…..LEEECious!!!!” :)

Two days ago, on Monday, Daddy lowered Hannah’s cot level.  It was beginning to look really dangerous, the way she would very quickly hold onto the side of the cot and hoist herself up on her feet, sometimes trying to reach over the cot.  At that time, the cot side was at the level of her tummy!  Now, it is the same level as he mouth…and she has discovered that the cotside tastes incredibly yummy…

At least now I can safely put her in the cot sometimes, when I have to urgently attend to her brother.

My little girl Hannah has been growing up so rapidly the past few weeks, I find that it is inevitable that I need to post a milestone post now before her 8th month update comes along!

  • She has begun crawling really really well now.  Sometimes when she doesn’t see me around and wants to look for me, she will crawl all the way from our living room to the dining and kitchen.  If she is in her *manja* mood, she will wail and cry while crawling!
  • She can stand, while holding the edge of her cot or the couch, or our hands, for support.
  • Sometimes we have even caught her beginning to cruise!
  • Since she can now sit steadily, we can put her in a baby chair when we dine outside in restaurants.  (soon, when I introduce rusks, she will have more things to occupy herself with)

  • She has cut her first two teeth!  I can see two bottom incisors sprouting!
  • And she is getting increasingly difficult to bathe.  Each time, she will want to grab onto my stool or the bath tub and try to stand up!

We do not believe in forcing our child to write or forcing him to hold a pencil or pen, when he is not ready.  We would rather he take his time to play and learn and discover it on his own.  That being said, Ethan has always loved numbers and alphabets.  And he LOVES experimenting, especially on his doodle pad.

One fine evening, he surprised us by using the square-shaped mold from the doodle pad to *write*.  He calls it “draw numbers”.  At first he wrote 1 and 2, and he was mighty pleased when we applauded.  He then proceeded with other numbers.

And writing this was his own idea…watch…

Ironically, that is also how Pete and I write the number 9.

But when I ask Ethan to write 6 after that, he looked at me with those sweet adorable eyes and shakes his head, “I don’t know how to write 6, Mommy!” LOL

Oh, how I love my little boy!

This could be the start of another very very chatty chatterbox in future! :)

What’s behind a name?  After I did a whole detailed post on Ethan’s name, it’s now Hannah’s turn.

When we found out we were gonna have a baby girl, we had already pretty much decided on the name Hannah.  I have loved the name Hannah since I was a schoolgirl, and it was only apt that I name my daughter as such.  We definitely wanted a Biblical name and one that is meaningful both for us and for her.  And we also wanted a name that’s not too common.  That’s why we chose Hannah, which means Favored (or Favored by God), or Grace.    In Biblical context, Hannah was one of the wives of Elkanah, and she was blessed with six children, one of whom was Samuel, the glorious warrior and judge of Israel.

With the Christened name decided, it was time for the harder part: deciding on a Chinese name.

Thanks to the internet, while we were in the US, I contacted a friend of mine in Penang to ask her hubby to help me ascertain a good number of strokes for Hannah’s Chinese name, based on her birth year, surname and also Mommy and Daddy’s birth year.  This friend of mine was also the one who helped calculate the number of strokes suitable for Ethan’s Chinese name.

She then came back with the results, which stated that based on Pete’s surname, Chua (蔡Cài), there were 4 stroke combinations that would be a good match for the 2nd and 3rd Chinese character for Hannah’s name:

  • 7 + 18
  • 18 + 7
  • 8 + 17
  • 18 + 7

So off to the drawing board we went.  Referring to some Chinese name books we had brought along, we wanted a name that had the water radical or water element in it.  I used the internet to list out the various combinations that would sound good and mean good, meeting all the criteria we had set out, and then we gave the list to another friend of ours in Santa Clara to help us decide or recommend.  After a few tweaks here and there, we arrived at a name that we all thought would be perfect for our baby girl.

We chose the name Xi Ling (Xǐ Ling:  ), which is a combination of 17 + 8 strokes.  Xǐ () meant Joy and Ling (), which also contained the water radical, carried the meaning “sound of the water flowing“; and together, Xi Ling (Xǐ Ling: ) means Joy Overflowing, which Hannah is living up to really well, seeing what a happy little baby she is! :)

So Hannah’s full name is Hannah Chua Xi Ling ( ~ Cài Xǐ Ling), carrying the meaning of Favored by God and Full of Grace, with Overflowing Joy.  Isn’t that a pretty name for a pretty baby? :)

Weight

9.1 kilos.  This month she only gained 100g, maybe because she was ill a few weeks ago.  But her weight is still in the 90-something percentile.

Height/Length

67cm

Motor Skills

  • She started with the commando crawl backwards, and now she can crawl slowly by moving first her arms and then lifting (sometimes dragging) her knee.  You’ll see Hannah moving all around the floor, and from one end of the cot to the other.
  • Hannah can sit unsupported most of the time, and when she does tumble over to the side, she will assume her crawling position.
  • Hannah also tries to do *stunts* like balancing herself on one knee and one elbow.
  • Very good and deft with her fingers.  She is able to hold objects very sturdily, transfering them from one hand to the other and back.  She hardly ever drops the objects, unless she is throwing a tantrum.
  • Attempting to STAND while being held by her hands.  Gave me a shock!
  • Hannah can (for the most part) sit independently in the bath tub when I give her her bath.  She loves playing with water and will kick and squeal with delight.  And she adores playing with the washcloth and a little cup I sometimes give her.  At times she will *protest* when I take her out too soon.   Note to self: time to introduce some cool bath toys to her! :)

Communication and Social Skills

  • Saying “Mum-mum-mum” when she wants milk or  Mommy.
  • Vocalizing many different sounds, “Bababa…”, “ooooh…”, “ahhh…” etc
  • Will stop, listen, look at me and smile when I start singing to her.  Her favorite songs: the ever popular “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”, “The Wheels of the Bus” and “If You’re Happy and You Know It”.  The actions totally tickle her.  And hey, I have noticed she has also started to try to copy my actions in “Twinkle Twinkle Little Star”!
  • Absolutely intrigued by Mickey Mouse Clubhouse’s Hot-Diggity-Dog song.  Will stop whatever she is doing, look in the direction of the TV, and smile happily.
  • Showing signs of readiness to play with Ethan.  She laughs and smiles at him and is always looking at him, as if *learning* how to behave.

Food and Feeding Every ounce of milk she takes is 100% Mommy’s milk.  She is back on rice cereal and EBM once a day now.  After I stopped her rice cereal for a few weeks, she initially didn’t seem interested in the cereal when I reintroduced it a few days ago.  But when I allowed her to hold her spoon and supervised her feeding herself, she got excited!  Now Hannah looks forward to every evening when I feed her the rice cereal.  I normally will feed her at dinner time (and her brother will want some of his own cereal too!) So rice cereal for Hannah, and a serving of Koko Krunch with fresh milk for Ethan! :P (I’m not complainin’!)

”I push myself up like this…”

“There…I’m on all fours. Now what?!”

“Eh? Smile for the camera AGAIN??!!!”

“Lemme try lifting my butt up…”

“I put one knee forward…like this, Mommy?”

“Gonna try to sit up on my own now…”

“That looks interesting…wonder what it tastes like…”

She’s almost there!

When we reached Hannah’s sitter’s house today to pick her up, Ethan exclaimed loudly, “Hi Hannah!” when he saw her.  Hannah squealed in delight, lifted her right hand up and waved! :)

She is SO the sociable little baby!

Ethan runs up to me and says,

“Mommy, Mommy look!  I draw Ethan!  Look!  E-T-H-A-N, ETHAN!”

By the way, he is SUCH an expert at spelling his own name.  And he even knows and can read my name, Pete’s name and of course, Hannah’s.

Two weeks ago, we brought Hannah for her first haircut.  Her bangs were getting too long, and I wanted to have the hairdresser do something about the “bald patch” at the back of her head.  After a short wait, it was Hannah’s turn, and I held her in my lap as the hairdresser did the trimming.  My hairdresser recommended we shave off the back portion of her hair, so that when the hair in the “bald patch” grew out, it would grow together with the bottom section.  For her bangs, she trimmed it a little bit shorter in a side parting manner.  Hannah’s sideburns were trimmed too.

She sat quietly while she had her haircut.  And then she smiled for the camera when the haircut was done!

Ain’t she a darling? :)

Oh, just in case you were wondering, it was just the kids getting their hair done that day.  So Ethan got the (ahem!) royal treatment too!

How time does fly!  Without me realizing it, my little bundle of joy is now an adorable, bouncy little baby girl, achieving milestone after milestone before my very eyes!

Weight

9 kilos!  Dr Jessica had only one word to say, “Wow!” :P

Height/Length

If I remembered correctly, it’s 67cm - will check with doc and update later.

Motor Skills

  • Can support herself with hands straight and on both her knees, as if preparing to crawl.  Then she rocks and pivots her body forward and backward!
  • Can also lift up her body so that her butt is high up in the air, and she is on tip toe, something like what her brother did with his downdog.
  • Able to sit independently for longer periods of time, her favorite place being the green and yellow playmat.  Her sitting position is still more towards the front, where she needs to support her weight with her arms, but she can go a few seconds without using her arms as support too.
  • Can crawl backwards, in backward commando or caterpillar fashion.  Can also move around by using the same method.
  • Can hold and grasp objects very steadily and pass them from one hand to the other.
  • Will try to grab hold of everything within her reach: drinking cup, plate of rice, etc.
  • Can sometimes extend her arms out to ask to be carried.
  • Her “breaststroke kicks” are getting stronger and stronger.
  • Loves to bounce up and down on our laps when we carry her holding her under her arms.
  • Can arch her back backwards when she is sitting or being held.
  • Can hold a toddler sippy cup quite steadily and drink from it!

Communication and Social Skills

  • Smiles and responds very well when spoken to.
  • Blowing a whole lot of raspberries!
  • On occasion, I have heard her saying “Momma” or “Memma” when she either wants milk or Mommy.
  • Loves to be carried and held.
  • Squeals and giggles.

Food and Feeding

Every ounce of milk she takes is Mommy’s milk.  I started her off on rice cereal about 2 weeks ago, but stopped for a while because she had a diaper rash the day after, and then she was a bit unwell, so I am now waiting for a few more days before continuing.

Just several days ago though, she gave me quite a scare because that evening, she totally refused to nurse from the breast, and instead kept biting me!  In the end, I had to express my milk and fed her with the sippy cup, and she eagerly finished 6 whole ounces!!!  She even cried when we took her cup away after 4 ounces to refill an additional 2 ounces.  I was shocked and surprised that she would have weaned herself from the breast automatically like that, and I was worried too that I would then have to express milk by the clock :P

Pete was all, “Okay what…then you don’t have to resort to using Bonjela!”

But thankfully, that night she was okay with nursing from the breast again, and she’s back to her old self again now.  Whew! :)

Some people might think I am a fussypot, but my criteria for selecting a daycare for Ethan is really very simple: he has to enjoy himself there.  I believe that a kid his age should not be made to do homework, or forced to study, instead all I am looking for is for him to mingle with his peers and have a good time.  Only then will he be able to learn in a conducive environment.

So upon our return from the States, we visited some centers and schools in Penang to see which one is suitable.  One was too far away, although I actually like the teaching methodology they employed, allowing the kids to learn through play.  But a 45-minute drive there and another 45-minute drive back home every day was definitely not acceptable. One center which was nearer to our home gave me the impression that the kids were being forced to read.  And another one which was just down the road from our place, I didn’t like it because the principal did not teach the students.  Instead it was a daycare franchise.  Some of the centers did not have openings available, so we didn’t bother checking them out.

In the end, we enrolled Ethan in a center/school for half a day, for something called a Playgroup (for his age).  It would take me about 10-15 minutes to drive there though, which was rather acceptable.  The good thing about this school is that they allowed a 2-week orientation period, whereby the parent would accompany the child for 2 hours and then slowly extend the period till he was confident enough to be on his own.  I knew that Ethan would be fine on his own for just half a day, but it was the getting used to the new environment, making new friends and all that would maybe be too overwhelming at first.

Before he started school, we prepped him for it by telling him every day, “We’re gonna put Hannah at Ah Poh’s house, okay?  Then we’ll leave Daddy in the office, and then we’ll fetch Ethan to school.  After that Mommy will go to the market.”

So when we ask him, “Where will Hannah go?” , he’ll say, “Ah Poh’s house!”

And “What about Daddy?” - “Daddy goes to office!”

“And Ethan?” - “Ethan goes to school!”

“Mommy?” - “Mommy goes to market!”

So even though it was only 2 weeks before the one-week school holidays were to start, we started Ethan off on his 2-week orientation.  I thought we were good to go with the prepping, but I was so wrong!  The first few days, he clung on to me like a leech.  He didn’t really want to participate in the activities, preferring instead to sit on my lap or asking me to carry him.  On the way to school, he would whine and complain, “I don’t want to go to school, Mommy!!”

But little by little he began to participate and join the other kids.  On the 5th day when I took him to school, I asked him if it was okay that he played with his friends in school, while Mommy goes to market and that I would come and fetch him later…he said “Okay.” :)

And then the following week, we slowly extended the duration he was in school.  First he was on his own for 2.5 hours, then 3.  Here are some pictures of Ethan, taken by one of his teachers during the recent Merdeka Day celebration the school had (dunno why Ethan had that serious worried look on his face…)

Nowadays, most of the time, he would happily go to school, and he would be all smiles when I pick him up afterward.  Occasionally he would not want to go and would not want me to leave, but I suppose it could be because of the long weekend or holiday.

Just last Monday, he didn’t want me to leave when the teacher greeted him at the door.  After a few minutes of persuasion, I realized he was asking me to KNOCK the door first before he could enter! LOL  So I knocked the door, the teacher opened it, and he entered the classroom happily…hehehe

One of his teachers commented that Ethan is now more settled and can play with his classmates.  She even said that he can speak really well, which left me beaming with pride.  When he comes home, he would tell us about his school friends: Annabelle, Nicole, Sharmay … how come all girls huh? :P

I’m glad I am able to play a major part in this milestone Ethan is experiencing.  Never mind the initial screaming, occassional whinings and sometimes tear-filled eyes when I take him to school…all that disappears as soon as I see his face light up when he sees me waiting to pick him up after school.  And it makes it all SO worth the while.  Sometimes when I leave him feeling sad and unhappy at school, I worry about how he’s doing, but he puts all my worries to rest when he tells me after school, “School’s so very fun, Mommy!”  And that’s all I need to know.

So our weekday routine is more or less established now, except sometimes he wakes up quite late.  On the way home from school, he will ALWAYS request to go to “O McDonald”, where he wants either “Vanilla ice cream” or ”Fries”.  Maybe we should be given a frequent diner card at Mc-D’s!

Yesterday marked the day I introduced Hannah to her first solids.  Just like for Ethan, I mixed some rice cereal with fresh EBM into a runny consistency(actually you couldn’t even tell the cereal was there!)  Good thing I managed to bring back the Gerber rice cereal from the US.  This one does not contain sucrose but supposedly tastes really good.

…and Hannah was living proof of it!

She was very eager from the onstart and tried to grab the spoon a few times.

As expected, some of the cereal dribbled out from the sides of her mouth, but she was practically willing to open up her mouth every time I offered her a spoonful.

Although she made a “sour face” on some occasions, and tried sucking on the spoon, she managed to finished the entire bowl of rice cereal, much to my joy :)

The conclusion?  Hannah is definitely READY for solids, and has a voracious appetite to boot!  Today, I gave her the same thing for tea time and she finished it all too!  Bravo Hannah!

Doesn’t this happy face tell you how much she loves it?

Hannah had her 5-month checkup with Dr Jessica back in Penang.  She took her 3rd dose of the Pneumococcal vaccine too.  Unlike her brother, Hannah laid down quietly on the scales as her weight was being read.

Weight

8.1 kilos.  About 98 percentile on the graph :O

Height/Length

Not measured, but sure seems like she has grown longer!

Motor Skills

  • Able to roll over at 4.5 months!  Ah, the beginning of mobility.  She started to roll just on the right side, but now she can do both right and left and then back again!  Diaper changes are definitely VERY challenging now!
  • Hannah has also started to push forward by lifting her butt and inching her way forward (sometimes backwards!).  If she doesn’t succeed in moving forward, she will just move around in circles.
  • Head support is quite steady now.  She can now sit comfortably in her Bumbo.  However, just like her brother, most of the time she will treat the Bumbo as her potty.
  • She can be amused by hanging toys for longer periods of time now.
  • She can play with and hold on to a toy and eventually suck on it.
  • She can hold both her feet at the same time.
  • She can sit on her own for a few seconds by bending her body forward and supporting herself with her arms.
  • She can raise her chest with arm support while lying on her stomach

Communication and Social Skills

  • Giggles a lot.
  • Loves to watch her brother and laughs at him.  I think she adores Ethan.
  • Can more or less respond to her name when called.
  • Can recognize faces better now, and is forever looking for Mommy.
  • Babbles a lot, and is VERY responsive when spoken to.  She smiles and coos.
  • Loves to be massaged.  She gets a body massage after her evening bath, which includes, hands, legs, chest and tummy and her face too!
  • Loves to get her hair combed.  Will lie very still and appears to be enjoying every minute of it.

Others

Sleeping through the night more often now, but occassionally still awakes for a feed.

Food and Feeding

She is 100% on Mommy’s milk. Drinks EBM from a toddler sippy cup and refuses the bottle.  Milk intake has increased apparently.

Hannah watches us intently when we eat.  Looks like she is quite ready for her intake of solids milestone next month!

During our past 9 months or so here in San Jose, Ethan has definitely enjoyed a tremendous time here.  And while we are in the midst of all our packing, I do think it is inevitable that Ethan will miss the precious time and the fun he had at daycare when we leave.

From a rather shy and not-too-many words little guy, Ethan is now talking non-stop, complete with a mind of his own!  His confidence has skyrocketed, although he sometimes still is a little shy with strangers.

He has learnt SO many new things at his daycare: singing, dancing, reading, counting, adorable expressions, good manners…the list goes on.

He’s also made many womderful friendships.  Wouldn’t it be cool if these kids were to meet up again a few years from now?

And I bet he also learnt a few things about how to be a good big brother too!

Yes, Ethan will definitely miss daycare here, but I am just so very thankful that he at least had the splendid opportunity to experience it.

And now, I just pray that we can find a good daycare back home that Ethan will love just as much.

We took Hannah for her 4-month checkup yesterday, just in time for me to post an update on her milestones (yeah, it’s all part of the plan). :)

Weight

7.569 kilos (16lb 11 oz)

Height/Length

64.8cm (all that stretching paid off!)

* Note: Hannah’s pediatrician commented that Hannah is growing beautifully :)

Motor Skills

  • Our little supported sitter is making more and more attempts to roll over.  If I place her on her back at an angle, she can roll her body over.  Won’t be long now!
  • Lifts head 90 degrees when lying on tummy or does a little push up sometimes.
  • Making “rasberry” sounds with her lips.
  • Grasping objects within her reach with incredible strength: mobile toys, toys given to her by her brother, my shirt, my hair, my fingers.
  • Can “bear weight” on both legs when we hold her to a standing position.
  • Salivating has increased.
  • Brings many objects to her mouth, including our hands!

Communication and Social Skills

  • Lots of repetitive sounds, high-pitched squeals and adorable giggles and sounds are made now.
  • Very sociable, smiles a lot when spoken to.
  • Looks at us very intently.
  • Beginning some separation anxiety.  As I am the one who is always with her, she sometimes cries out when she doesn’t see me.  Sometimes she would be happily playing but will cry out when she sees me! :P
  • Ticklish.

Others

Sleeping through the night more often now, but occassionally still awakes for a feed.

Food and Feeding

She is 100% on Mommy’s milk.  Less regurgitation, but of course, needs to be burped after every feed (otherwise she complains).  Hannah is not at all on the bottle, and we are contemplating moving her to the cup right away when she is six months, probably.  We’ll see.

With Hannah spending all her time with Mommy, isn’t it a given that I would be busy taking pictures of my little angel?  I cherish every minute I spend with her, whether it is breastfeeding her, bathing her, changing her, playing with her or simply just watching her sleep.  There is something very angelic about watching a baby sleeping; with Hannah, I love seeing her sleeping position with both hands to her sides: so peaceful, so calm :)

Oh, and of course, I absolutely LURVE the smell of her head and her hair…and her SKIN!  Intoxicatingly heavenly…and dare I say, strong enough to drive away the worries and stress of the day!

Hannah loves her tummy time; being rolled over from her back to her front, and then trying to inch her way forward.  She’s very good, and is able to *adjust* her hand position in order not to let it be “stuck” when rolling over.  Of course she can’t roll over herself yet, and needs to be supervised.

We bring Hannah out on days I go out, but I suspect she loves it better and finds comfort at home.  The thing is, Hannah cannot stand heat at all!  It’s summer now and way, way hot!  Just a little rise in the temperature and she will be perspiring!  And since she cannot *tell* us yet, she will wail and cry, all the way back home (if we are in the car): persistent, heart-wrenching cries that will not stop until we push her stroller back safely in the confines of our home and then turn the air-conditioning on.

But she does look adorable sitting in her infant car seat, no?

Oh, and apart from just sleeping and reclining in her infant-toddler rocker, Hannah can also sit quite comfortably in the Bumbo now!  Of course, her big brother would then want to sit in it too! LOL

Last week, Ethan had his first visit to the dentist.  I know we should have brought him when he was about two or two-and-a-half, but I was searching for a good pediatric dentist, fussypot that I am.  Anyway, I stumbled on this pediatric dentist’s site and the pictures in his clinic looked really cool; with soft toys everywhere and smiling kids, I knew this was where Ethan could go.

I promptly made an appointment, and although we arrived at the clinic a little late, we quickly registered (while Ethan busied himself with Super Mario Bros.) and were ushered in.  I went in with Ethan while Pete stayed in the reception area with Hannah.

The dentist’s examination room was nothing like the regular dental clinic.  It almost seemed like a child’s playroom!  Ethan immediately went for the Ikea bolster thingy, which coincidentally was the identical one he has at home.

Then the dental assistant got Ethan to warm up by giving him a giant toothbrush to brush the “dino”’s teeth:

It was funny cuz Ethan wanted to brush his own teeth at first! :)

Next, the dentist came in and explained that he would just be checking Ethan’s teeth and *counting* them.  Unfortunately, despite Ethan saying “okay” back home when I told him what the dentist would be doing, he refused to lie down.  So I had to hold Ethan, one leg on either side of my waist, then I faced the dentist, and lowered Ethan’s head so his teeth could be checked.

There was some buildup along the gumlines of some of his teeth, but thankfully no cavities.  As usual, the dentist asked Ethan to brush at least twice a day and floss too.  And as expected, when his teeth was counted, he had only 18: the 2 missing teeth were his two bottom incisors, just like Daddy’s. :P

We were then ushered to the x-ray room where Ethan was the perfect angel while his teeth x-rays were taken.

No fuss, no mess…he just bit on a piece of material for the x-ray to be taken, then his teeth picture was snapped; twice: once for the top jaw and once for the bottom.

Here’s his anxious look waiting for the x-rays to be ready.

Well, that soon turned to happiness when he was asked to choose a balloon: Ethan chose the red one:

His teeth x-rays looked fine, and we could see the permanent teeth below his milk teeth.  It is possible though that he will still take after Pete and have 2 incisors missing in the bottom jaw.

Oh, and before we left the clinic, Ethan was asked to choose a toy too.  He is very into musical instruments, so he chose a purple recorder!

We were told to make another appointment for cleaning of his teeth, so I did.  And his teeth-cleaning appointment was 2 days ago…

I had explained to Ethan that it would just be a very simple brushing and cleaning and he would get a balloon and toy after that.  On the way to the clinic, he was all, “I wanna see Mr Dentist!”

But as soon as the dental assistant was ready to start the cleaning procedure, Ethan looked very troubled and began sobbing.  He lied down on the bench-like chair (totally flat, not reclinable like a regular dentist’s) and looked very upset.  Maybe he wasn’t very sure what to expect, but after a few minutes of consoling and reassurance (and me holding a red balloon for him) he quietened down, wore his *sunglasses* and had his teeth cleaned.

The dental assistant did the following:

  • flossed his teeth
  • brushed his teeth with a toothbrush to show me (and Ethan) the correct way of brushing
  • cleaned his teeth with a rubbery vibrating tool
  • wiped his mouth and teeth dry with cotton gauze
  • applied flouride *bubble bath* on the teeth
  • wiped his teeth again

Ethan was to refrain from food and drnks for half an hour after that.

Good job, Ethan!  Look at how sparkling clean his teeth are now!

And this is the toy he chose:

Looks like I’ll have to get him a balloon and toy the next time he visits a dentist in Malaysia!

Weight

Let’s just say she is growing well and getting chubbier by the day.  I did notice, however, that her waistline has decreased a tad, because I have had to tighten the snaps on her cloth diapers a notch.  She’ll be going for her 4-month checkup early next month, so we’ll get an official weight reading then.

Height/Length

Again, we’ll get her measured for length next month, although I must say that Hannah has been doing a lot of stretching!

Motor Skills

  • Hannah’s coordination skills have improved a lot, and she can now finger, touch and play with her toys hung over her head.  Sometimes she would even “talk” to them!
  • She loves her tummy time, and being able to look around when on her front.  I have also been allowing her some exercise time, closely supervising her rolling back and forth on a flat and soft surface like the bed.
  • She has started salivating a little, and sometimes blowing raspberries.
  • Her head support is also getting stronger by the day, although she still wobbles her head a little when we put her in the Bumbo, so we still have to supervise her.
  • Very good at kicking and struggling.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Eye contact and focus is now better, and you know, I just love looking and talking to her, looking at her big brown eyes!
  • Hannah is becoming very sociable, and will smile almost immediately when we talk to her, or sing to her.
  • She will giggle sometimes too, and laugh out loud when I tickle her.
  • She will turn in the direction her name is called.
  • She will sometimes open her arms wide when she senses I am about to pick her up in my arms.
  • She likes to make a cooing “rrrrr” sound when I speak to her, as if in reply to what I say.
  • And, as is apparent in our family gene pool, she is one persistent baby, with loud and heart-wrenching cries when she needs attention.

Others

Being a light sleeper, Hannah will stir from her sleep at the slightest sound.  But immediately when I carry her in my arms, she will fall back to sleep.  Once, her Daddy managed to calm her down by holding her hands away from her face when she woke up and she slept on for 4 hours straight!  We are trying this method now :)

Food and Feeding

She is 100% on Mommy’s milk.  Still regurgitating off and on, but hopefully it will be a thing of the past soon.

As we were having dinner yesterday, Hannah was sitting in her infant-toddler seat, quietly playing with the toys hanging over her head, batting at them with her hands and fingers, and cooing softly.

And then suddenly, when Pete and I were in mid-conversation, we heard that oh-so-familiar melody of Old MacDonald coming from Hannah’s direction.  When the cord attached to the little cow in the middle is pulled, the song would play.  Ethan was playing with his fridge phonics in the kitchen at that time, so he couldn’t have pulled it. :P

I turned to look at Hannah, and her hand was firmly gripping the cord holder, making sweet nursery rhyme music.  That was all it took for me to start applauding.

Much to my delight, Ethan has developed a keen interest in reading books lately.  He would ask us to read to him all his books over and over again, and although sometimes he impatiently wants to turn the page, he would be all smiles when we read to him.  Unlike his behaviour before when I tried reading to him, where he would push away the book disinterestedly, Ethan now voluntarily brings his books to us.

We do not have many story books here with us in the US, so instead of pathetically reading the ABC or Numbers book repeatedly, I decided to get him some new ones.  Lately I have been trying to get some books online and it’s addictive, really!

I was so glad when this came in the mail today.  Eric Carle’s The Very Hungry Caterpillar has got to be one of the most popular children’s books around today.  And when Ethan refused to bathe yesterday, I showed him his surprise *treat* to be enjoyed after he took a bath and off he willingly went.

After his bath, he remembered the book, and happily asked me to read to him.  All through the book, he was eagerly pointing out the things he saw.  The moon, the sun, the caterpillar…he even counted the fruits like strawberries and apples.

And when we read that the caterpillar turned into a beautiful butterfly, Ethan exclaimed, “The End!”  Sure meant a whole lot to me when he turned to me and said, “I like it Mommy!  Thank you Mommy!”

Later that night, I read the book a couple of times to him again, including using it to calm him down when he was throwing a tantrum.

I’m sure we will be reading about the hungry caterpillar again this evening.  And I can’t wait to share other wonderful stories with him.

Weight

5.846 kilos or 12 lb 14.2 oz (weighed in at her recent 2-month well child checkup).  Hannah’s weight is charted at 92.35% of growth percentile based on weight-for-age!

Height/Length

56.5 cm

Motor Skills

  • Hannah’s getting stronger in her kicks.  She also loves to splash the water with her feet when I bathe her.
  • She can open and close her hands sometimes.
  • More eager at batting the toys hung in front of her.
  • Can hold head up at an angle when placed on her tummy.
  • Can rotate her whole body while placed on her back on a flat surface.
  • Once, it felt like she was trying to stand when I held her against me, and her feet were pressed on my thighs, as if she was standing with support!
  • Likes to be propped up.  She loves to *sit* on the sofa, or held in a sitting position when carried.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah’s loud throaty sounds are getting less, especially after we started using a humidifier.
  • She has started cooing and making sounds in response to what we speak.  Sounds like “oooh” and “aaah” are her specialties.
  • More smiles now :)
  • Cries are getting louder and stronger and more persistent, sometimes to the extend of  “sounding out of key”.  The word we are looking for here is “heartwrenching”.
  • Eye contact is more apparent and she will follow our movements intently with her eyes.

Others

Hannah can sometimes sleep for about 5 hours straight during the night, but it is not consistent.  Hopefully our sleepless nights will be a thing of the past soon.

Food and Feeding

She is 100% on Mommy’s milk.  However, because her weight is on the higher end of the scale, her doctor has asked us to try giving her slightly less to drink; perhaps removing the breast a little sooner or feeding her just one breast during the night, or try going through the night without a feed.  On the other hand, I feel that Hannah can gauge when she is full because she would sometimes reject the breast, unlike her brother the last time.

Ethan loves playing with jigsaw puzzles, and solving them, of course!  That’s a good thing, right?  Jigsaws hone a child’s ability to think, be creative and it’s fun!

A few weeks ago, my Mom got Ethan a 24-piece Little Einsteins jigsaw.  He was thrilled when he saw it, and wanted to fix the puzzle immediately.  We had to guide him the first few times, so he was able to solve it.  Then by and by, he would practise on his own, trying to fit the pieces together.  Sometimes he would try a particular piece, turning it in all directions, and when he saw it did not fit, he would try a different piece.  He would only ask us for help if he was really stuck.

Ethan would practise solving his jigsaw puzzle almost every day, sometimes several times a day.  And each time he completes it, we’d praise him and say, “Wow, you did it!” and applaud his efforts. :)

Well, practice indeed makes perfect, for now Ethan can solve the jigsaw puzzle all on his own, in just a very short time!  He’s all seriousness when he’s at the puzzle, sometimes saying, “Two more pieces…” and “One more piece..” as he completes it.  And then when he does, he’ll go, “I did it!” and flash a jubilant smile!

Ethan has shown a remarkable improvement in his language skills since we relocated to the States.  His prowess in phonics has been especially exceptional, and even Aunty Van, his daycare provider, has reported that Ethan is getting very good at phonics.

In fact, I have no doubt in my mind that he can already read.  And here are some scenarios to prove my point:

  • As Ethan was playing with his Leapfrog Word Whammer on the fridge one day, Pete guided him to spell the word “bus”, by asking him to put in the letters “b”, “u” and “s”.  Ethan immediately said “bus!” when he was done.  And that’s not all.  One day as I was cleaning up in the kitchen, he pointed out a word to me by saying, “Mommy, cold!”  I turned around and looked.  He had spelt “koh” and he proudly announced that it was “koh!”
  • His Aunty Van told me that Ethan read off the word “pink” on her sweater, even though there wasn’t a hint of the color pink on her.
  • Ethan was *accompanying* me in the kitchen and he wanted to spell the words on the dishwasher.  He went, “O-F-F”, and I would ask him, “What does that spell?”, and Ethan would say, “Off!”
Then he went, “O-P-T-I-O-N-S”, and when I asked, “What does that spell?”, he happily exclaimed, “Octopus!”
Why, of course!  He recognized that the word OCTOPUS has similar letters to the word OPTIONS!
  • Lastly, he surprised us one day when he was about to play on his computer.  We’d created user profiles on our PC, and we had to click on the profile to enter.  Ethan knows he has to click on the “Ethan” profile, but that day, he suddenly said, “Jors!” and pointed to my name!  Nobody taught him to say that but for some reason he knew that was how it was pronounced!
Now, he would say “I wanna click on ‘JOYCE”!”  :)
Yep, he has already got the pronunciation down pat!

Ethan’s favorite song right now has got to be the ABC song.  When he first started daycare, he would sit quietly and listen.  Then by and by, he picked up the song himself, and would be very happy when we sang it to him at home.  He would smile happily and clap when we were done.

And then one day, when they had the singing session at daycare, he suddenly stood up and sang the song all by himself.  His Aunty Van was the one who told me this, and I was so proud of him then :)

Sometimes when we start to sing the ABC song at home, Ethan would say, “No!  I’ll do it!” and he would start singing it on his own.  It started with a slightly off-key version, but now the song is beginning to take shape…well, he does it in a most adorable manner now.

Here’s his slow version, video taken right before bedtime:

… and a faster version of the song, sung after dinner:

Ain’t he a darling?

Last week he surprised me with Twinkle Twinkle Little Star, full version.  I need to get a video of him singing that soon :)

Weight

3.35 kilos (weighed in at 2 weeks’ old during her 2-week pediatrician visit).  She sure feels a lot heavier now!

Height/Length

50.8cm (measured at 2 weeks’ old during her 2-week pediatrician visit)

Motor Skills

  • Hannah is able to lift head for a short period of time when placed on her tummy.  I try to give her some tummy time every day just to allow her a different view and also to provide some exercise! … and she LOVES it!
  • She can also move her head from side to side, especially when a rattling toy is moved in front of her face.  She will follow the sound intently.
  • She has started batting the little toys on her mobile in the infant-to-toddler rocker.
  • She makes jerky arm movements, especially when asleep. When there is a loud disturbance when she is asleep, Hannah jerks her hand upwards, and they sometimes remain that way.
Communication and Social Skills
  • Hannah makes loud throaty sounds all the time, and even more so during the night when everyone is asleep (or trying to sleep).  It could be due to her GER, and I hope it will go away soon.
  • She gives the occassional social smile, sometimes when we talk and sing to her, and sometimes she even smiles in her sleep!  In fact, the first time Hannah smiled at me was the first night we spent together in the hospital!
  • There are times when Hannah is awake and alert and just observing the world around her, but she will sometimes cry when she feels lonely or thinks no one is around.   She will, however, quieten down and look at people nearby with those huge brown eyes when we start talking or singing to her.
  • She sometimes will cry, not out of hunger, but just to be carried and cuddled.
  • Hannah can soothe herself to sleep most of the time when placed in the cot. We try to place her in the cot when she is drowsy but not asleep, although sometimes I allow her to fall asleep in my arms and carry her in a sling in a snuggle hold position, which is currently her favorite.  I am not complaining because in the snuggle hold position, I have two free hands! :)
  • She enjoys being clean, and when she cries to be changed because her diaper is wet, she will calm down immediately when I put her on the changing table.  She also loves her bathtime nowadays, and will patiently stay as still as possible while I bathe her.

Others

  • Hannah is pooping less frequently now, but some of the poops are MAJOR BIG ones.   In fact, we just had a catastrophic explosive poop on the morning of the day she turned one-month-old.  My whole right forearm acted as a shield for the poop and as a result, I had to clean the carpet, the side table, bottles of lotion, changing table and mat early in the morning.
  • Hannah has some pimple-looking rashes on her face and head. I have already removed chocolate and ice cream from my diet, and hopefully it will help the rashes subside. Ethan had rashes too, so perhaps it runs in the family.

Food and Feeding
She is 100% on Mommy’s milk.

Last week, we brought Ethan and Hannah for a routine pediatrician checkup; Ethan had his 3-year-old checkup, while Hannah had her 2-week checkup done.

Ethan was very cooperative.  He happily undressed and put on a very cute hospital gown, and stayed very still while his blood pressure was taken, his eyes, ears and throat was checked, and he was very well-behaved too as Hannah was being checked.

Ethan’s height: 3′ (0.914m)

Ethan’s weight: 28lb (12.701kilos)

The doctor assessed Ethan and we were VERY amazed that Ethan could draw a CIRCLE when the doctor asked him to!  Isn’t that spectacular? :)

Anyway, the doctor required that Ethan take a Tuberculin skin test and an anemia test.  The anemia test is a simple finger prick test, and we were given the results immediately: Ethan is not anemic.  As for the Tuberculin skin test, we had to return 48-72 hours later to obtain the results.  The Tuberculin skin test (also known as the Mantoux test) involved injecting a little bit of Tuberculin into the skin layer of Ethan’s forearm and observing the reaction.

Our poor boy of course wailed and cried when both the Tuberculin test and anemia test was done.  Not even stickers would pacify him.

The doctor also prescribed fluoride tablets for Ethan, given that the tap water in the area we live in does not contain fluoride.  Ethan calls it his “circle” vitamins now, and thankfully, he happily takes one a day (they are grape flavored!)

Anyway, back to the Tuberculin test…we returned to the hospital 2 days later for the reading, and it was positive.  Of course, Pete and I think it is possibly due to the fact that Ethan had his BCG vaccination at birth.  Kids born in the US do NOT have the BCG vaccination and they take the Tuberculin skin test to test if they had been exposed to the TB bacteria.  Now because Ethan tested positive for the skin test, as a routine protocol, we had to get a chest x-ray done on him to ensure he did not have the active TB bacteria in him.

Two days after the chest x-ray, the doctor called to let me know that the x-ray was fine and Ethan did not have an active TB disease in him.  However, the doctors here are worried that the TB bacteria could lie dormant in the child’s body, as in latent tuberculosis,  and recommended Ethan go on a 9-month medication.

Pete and I are declining this because it is very certain that Ethan’s initial positive skin test result is due to his BCG vaccination.  Furthermore, Ethan will definitely NOT like to be on medication for such a long duration and also we would be headed for home in about 4 months’ time.

In any case, we learnt a few new things from this experience, but what is confusing is…the BCG vaccine is not a 100% fullproof prevention of the TB disease.  If this is so, why are babies in Malaysia being vaccinated at birth?  Why can’t they do away with the vaccine and perform the skin test instead?

Last Sunday, Hannah had her first professional photo session.  It was not by choice, of course… we had to get her passport photos done to register her birth with the Malaysian Consulate in LA and also to apply for her Malaysian passport.

The night before I googled for nearby photo studios that provided this service, and we decided on one that was opened on Sundays.  Little did we know that it would be SO packed!

I had to specially request that the photographer take Hannah’s picture first because we were afraid she would fall asleep soon.  So after a little bit of a wait, the screen was set up, but there was a slight problem.  Because Hannah was only 2 weeks’ old, of course she could not yet hold her head up on her own and so we had to support her neck.  But that would mean the photo would show the hands of the person holding her!

So the photographer got a tiny little round chair and draped a piece of whitish cloth over it.  We then placed Hannah on the chair and tried to make her stay very still and look straight for the photo to be taken.  It wasn’t easy, because she kept turning her head to one side and didn’t look very comfortable.

We finally got a few shots, but when the photographer tried to view them, there was a problem with the memory card.  So he had to retake the shots.

And there we were again, trying to make Hannah *smile* for the camera.  But just as Hannah had the perfectest pose, the photographer had some problem with the camera and had to change the memory card again!

Anyway, we attempted once again, and finally we were able to get a couple of shots.  We paid for the photos and waited for them to be printed.

What do you think?

Monday March 2 2009 was a historical day for Ethan because it was then that he was elevated to Big Brother status. :)

Mommy gave birth to baby Hannah at 2:17p.m. and at the same time, presented Ethan with an added responsibility.

I had to stay in the hospital for that night, and Pete had to single-handedly care for Ethan.  It also marked the first time ever that I had ever been away from Ethan at all.  My fears were unfounded, of course, because when I called home that night, Ethan sounded very cheerful.  Pete assured me that everything would be well taken care of, and it certainly was!

Ethan only came to visit me and his sister the following evening, right before Hannah and I were discharged.  I was very happy to see Ethan and likewise, I think he was happy too! :)

I had brought along a photo of him to place by my bedside, just to let him know that I was thinking of him.  And of course, he noticed it and grinned happily when he saw it.

I am very glad to be home now, and I hope Ethan is as excited to be a big brother as I am about embarking on a new chapter in our lives.

Ethan turned three on January 31st 2009.  Having survived the “terrible twos”, are we allowed to heave a sigh of relief now?

On the contrary…I think not! :P

Weight

He was weighed in at about 29.3lbs when he visited the doctor last month, and that converts to about 13.3kilos.

Height

36 inches.

Developmental Milestones

  • He is becoming more assertive in his actions, and knows how to take his stand when he wants something.  Surely a sign of independence, but sometimes can lead to tempers too.  He even says, “NO! Don’t do that!” when it suits the situation.
  • Can count from 1-40 now, but strangely he leaves out number 16.  He is learning really fast, and he knows the concept, i.e. I have heard him attempting, “Forty-ONE, Forty-TWO,…”
  • Calls out endearingly to his Daddy, for example, he would say in a singsong way, “Oh Daddy…!”, and sometimes when I pick Ethan up before fetching Pete after work, upon seeing his Daddy, Ethan would smile and go, “Hallo Daddy!” and “Miss you Daddy!”
  • Does not really like to reply in the affirmative YES, but he uses the term “okay” sparingly.  Lately, he has even started to reply “Okay, Mom!” (yes, that’s right, Mom and not Mommy!).  Oh by the way, his favorite word is “NO” :P
  • Loves to show us what he has built or done, especially with his Lego set.  He’ll go, “Look! Look!” while proudly displaying his masterpiece.
  • Learning to take turns by saying, “My turn!”
  • Has a great sense of humor, and sometimes does things that makes himself laugh out loud.  He especially finds it funny when we accidentally drop things, and say “Oops!”, and he’ll laugh and say, “Funny!”

Food and Feeding

Depending on his mood, he will eat a lot or very little.  There have been times when he will finish 2 whole bowls of rice, and sometimes he would even take the chicken meat.  But sometimes, he would reject rice completely, choosing only to have bread or cheese or muffins or chocolate milk.

For Ethan’s 3rd birthday, we decided to have a small do at his daycare on Friday, the day before his birthday.  After all, all his friends are there and we figured he would have so much more fun that way.

I prepared party favor packs for each of the kids at the daycare, and we chose the (what else?) Mickey Mouse theme.

Inside the party bag, there was a toy spring (Ethan goes “BoinggggkKKK!” when he plays with it), a mini spinning top, a kaleidoscope, an activity sheet and a big sticker for the kids.

I also baked Ethan’s favorite “featherberry muffins” for the party, and we ordered two pizzas too!

Of course we also had some balloons!  Ethan had been asking for “banoons” since early January, and I told him he would get some for his birthday.  And these did not disappoint…. :)

Driving with a dozen helium-filled balloons and a gigantic Mickey Mouse balloon in the back seat of the car was a scary experience, but it was worth the while.

And oh, we certainly didn’t forget the cake!  Here in the US, (surprisingly) it is so hard to find a bakery which does character cakes on the cake itself that was edible.  But we managed to get an adorable Mickey and Minnie cake for Ethan from Safeway.  Although the figurines aren’t edible, we were sure that Ethan would love it, simply because of Mickey and Minnie!

All the kids were excited when they saw the cake, and in order to prevent the cake from being *destroyed*, we decided to do the cake-cutting first.  When we lit the No. 3 candle on the cake, Ethan looked stunned, perhaps a little awestruck?

He looked all of seriousness, and it was as if he was deep in thought.  He still looked so serious when we sang the Happy Birthday song to him, and didn’t even smile when we asked him to….

Still serious when we blowed the candle out….

Still serious when we cut the cake…

…and still deep in thought when we posed for a picture…

Maybe he was just letting it all sink in…..still figuring out how to react to all this “birthday boy” attention he was getting…

And then…he decided to do something!

We all had a fun time at Ethan’s party (pizza was good!), and I am sure Ethan was thoroughly enjoying himself too!

I know for a fact that he was absolutely delighted with the balloons!

And that infectious laugh and happy face never fails to brighten up our day…. at the end of it all, it just makes it all the more worthwhile when he voluntarily exclaimed, “Thank you Daddy!” and “Thank you Mommy!”

Awwwww……..

Weight

Should be about 12.5kilos.

Height

36 inches.

Teeth

Loves to brush his teeth on his own, even carrying his step stool to the sink, asking for his toothbrush and toothpaste and imitating his Daddy brushing his teeth.  I have a feeling he swallows a little bit of the toothpaste though, but I am still using the fluoride-free toothpaste on him, so that’s perfectly fine.  Ethan allows me to brush his teeth for him too, when he is in the mood.  Of course, I am always happy to do so.

And oh yes, his teeth-brushing sessions always end with a good gurgling and spitting session. :)
Developmental Milestones

  • Becoming more confident in the way he speaks, and can make short sentences like, “Look at that!”, “I wanna go outside!”, or “I don’t want it!” and my favorite: “Daddy, wake up!”
  • Knows how to work his charm using magic words like “pees” (please) and “thank you”.  When I give him a Ritz Bits cracker, he will say ever so sweetly, “Thank you Mommy!” - melts my heart every time he does that.
  • Loves to hop and jump around.  I guess it is just him practising and perfecting his skills.  In addition to jumping and hopping on level surfaces, he sometimes also jumps from a slightly higher level (like the bottom step of a flight of steps).
  • He uses the term “Go Potty” when he wants to have a bowel movement.  Sometimes if he peepees in the potty, and we applaud him for doingso, he will say, “I pee pee in the potty!”
  • Knows how to put away his toys.  I especially am pleased to see him detach his Lego pieces and put them away nicely in the box.  He’ll go “put it away”, and does the deed.
  • Loves to share his toys, his food, his milk etc with one and sundry, … well especially his soft toys.  It’s so cute the way he goes, “Here, Mickey..”, and “Here, bear…” and then “Here, Daddy…”, and “Here, Mommy”, while he gives out the item he is sharing.
  • Ethan is a very sensitive and affectionate boy, and is always asking for a HUG.  And he is very PASSIONATE about things.  Even when he is watching TV… he gets very engrossed when something bad is about to happen to Dora, for example, and says, “No, no, noooo!!!!” almost in a pleading tone.
  • Has started to say numbers like “Twenty-ONE!”, “Twenty-TWO!”, etc…
  • Wants to go swimming in the “swimming pool”, but we told him we would only take him when the weather is warmer.  It’s enticing to him because he sees the pool every time he steps out of our apartment.
  • Becoming more sociable and he actually looks forward to meeting all his friends at daycare every day.  He knows all their names and sometimes during holidays or weekends, he would mention their names too.  And now, who wouldn’t smile when they see Ethan saying “Hi!” while waving, or “Hello Daddy!” first thing in the morning? :)
  • Can tell us where we *should* go or where he *wants to go*, by saying, “This way!” and pointing to a particular direction.
  • Demanding to be more independent and his favorite phrase now is, “I’ll do it!”  He wants to buckle up on his own, climb into the car seat on his own, take off his shoes on his own, etc.

Food and Feeding

Lately Ethan has started eating more, we noticed.  He has been asking for “more milk”, “more rice” and (yippee) “more chicken”.  His favorite food of course is still rice and he absolutely loves rice with “saw-soyce” (soy sauce).

I absolutely love the way he pronounces “milk”.  He used to say “nenno” but not any more.  Now it’s “merlk”…you know, the VERY precise pronunciation.

Weight

Did not weigh him recently, but he certainly looks more *bulat* now.

Height

36 inches

Teeth

We recently discovered that Ethan LOVES to brush his teeth together with his Daddy.  So whenever we get the opportunity, both of them will brush their teeth together.  After all, we have 2 bathroom sinks side by side to accomodate that :)
Developmental Milestones

  • Can and chooses to unzip his jacket and remove it all by himself.  In fact, he wants to do most things by himself now, including buckling himself up in the car seat.
  • Can recognize and verbalize most colors, for instance “yellow”, “red”, “blue”, “brown”, “purple”, “white” and “green”.  For some reason, though, “orange” is still “afoo” to him.
  • Picking up words and expressions we use like a sponge.  His f
