bravohannah

Oh yes, she is.  It seemed like just yesterday that I held a tiny little pink bundle of joy in my arms, and now a little more than 3 years later, she’s all grown up.

At the beginning of this year, Hannah was still wearing diapers day in and out, but after the first term of her school, she decided that she wanted to wear panties to school and during the day time.  She did not have any accidents…not major ones anyway.

About a month or two back, I started her on training pants at night, since I’d noticed her diapers dry almost every morning.  Then just last week, Hannah decidedly insisted that she wanted out of the training pants and wanted panties for night time.

…which is just what I put her in.

In her own words, she said, “Mommy, I want to wear panties now.  I’m a big girl, I can keep it dry.  I can!!!”

She’s done a great job thus far.  Only one isolated accident and sometimes she does wake me up to tell me she wants to go peepee.

She never fails to amaze me … she grows up so fast, and being independent is just something that comes naturally to her.  Bravo Hannah!

While I was busy sewing the tooth pouch, Ethan decided to write his first book.  Yeah, no kidding.  All his own ideas and words, with no help at all from us.

He finished the book on that day itself, and I’d asked him if he would like to color his illustrations too.  He agreed.

So after a few days of coloring, he finally completed his first masterpiece: Fire Trucks. 🙂

Here’s Ethan reading the book he wrote:

I love how detailed he was, for instance his book is from the Baby Kids series, and he even wrote the recommended age group for this book on the cover (2-4); according to Ethan, kids older than 4 might find this book a little bit boring (LOL!).  On the back, he wrote a personal message to the readers: “I hope you love my first book!”

Yesterday, he started on Baby Kids Cars, his second book; and he told me he would be working on a  Bumper Issue next!  He’s wondering if anyone would buy his first book now…Anyone?  Anyone? 🙂

There’s no hard and fast rule about when and how to toilet train a child, but experts say that if the child is ready, half the battle is won.  Some people choose to *make* the child ready by programming them to go potty from the onstart, but I was of the *other* school of thought and only began starting Ethan on toilet training after he turned 3.

Yes, you may have noticed that I hardly blogged about toilet training because I wanted it to happen naturally, or so I thought.  I also didn’t wanna jinx the process by blogging about it and then having to retract whatever I had written.  You could say that I wanted to wait till the entire process was completed before I wrote about it.

I’m extremely proud of my little boy … now my little man.  Although it was a process that took us 3 years to complete, I’m so happy that through it all, he feels a sense of achievement in what he is doing.  The initial struggle has been well worth it.

Because once it happens, it just does.

In the Beginning

Ethan was able to let us know when he wanted to poopoo when he was about 2+, and that helped loads.  But the peepee portion was the one that was eluding us.  I tried taking him to the toilet every now and then, but I could tell he was not ready.  Even though he was in cloth diapers then, which were supposed to speed up toilet training, he just wasn’t ready.

We had a few successes during our US relocation, as sometimes he would peepee successfully when we take him to the toilet.

At other times, though, he just wasn’t interested.

So we decided to go cold turkey and put him in underpants.  But even then, he would not feel uncomfortable when he had small accidents.  Time and again, we went back to square one, and we were not going anywhere.  I tried sticker charts (1 sticker for a successful peepee and 2 for a successful poopoo).  It worked for a while but then the novelty wore off and he would go back to wearing his pull-ups.

I admit I did worry a little as to when he would be toilet-trained, but then I kept reminding myself that there weren’t any teenagers I knew who weren’t toilet-trained, so I knew the day he would be completely trained would come some day.  The question is just when.

Admittedly, it’s difficult when we were in the minority.  When people around you tell you about their kids who are toilet-trained since 2, you just have to learn to smile and say, “He’ll be ready soon.”

Fresh Attitude Kit from Mel Designs

Weight

Should be about 14.3 kilos, at least.

Height

About 92 cm

Teeth

19 teeth, or almost there… Right now, she has 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 incisors bottom jaw;  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw;  4 pramolars and 4 more back pramolars are making their appearance slowly but surely.

She can more or less brush her own teeth now, including squeezing the toothpaste onto her toothbrush, gargling and spitting, however, I still brush for her after that.  Because of the good example shown by her brother, Hannah brushes her teeth twice daily: morning and night 🙂

Developmental Milestones

  • Can walk up regular stairs using alternate feet.
  • Likes to show us how she can “balance on one foot”
  • Hannah is showing an improved pencil grip, and can draw somewhat clear alphabets now, all these without us prodding or teaching her how to hold a pencil or write!  She still loves to color and will make beautiful pictures for me.
  • She’s learning how to fasten and unfasten her buttons.  She loves to undress and dress herself up, and will insist on doing so, unless if she really can’t do it, then I will step in to help.
  • Language-wise, she is showing that she knows how to use the plural form of words when necessary, although sometimes the word itself might not be right.  For example, “Wow…look Mommy!  So many car-ses!”  She meant to say “cars” of course, but it is a very good sign that she used the plural form of “car” instead of the singular.
  • She’s also picking up some Mandarin from school, and can count very simply 1 – 10 in Mandarin (though not clear), and she can also sing easy Mandarin songs.
  • Loves to narrate what happened in school and can carry on an intelligent conversation with an adult with ease.

Toilet Training

During the recent one-week school holidays, Hannah asked to put on her panties in the daytime instead of her pull-ups.  I agreed, and to my absolute amazement, she was able to keep dry the whole day long, letting me know when she had the peepee feeling and going to the toilet on time.

So when school reopened, I discussed with her teachers and told them that she was ok out of pullups during the day.

And she has been really really good thus far 🙂  Her diaper rash has also subsided since she started wearing only pullups through the night 🙂  Good progress indeed!

Food and Feeding

Appetite is good, but the only thing she needs to work on is to eat more greens!

She’s been practising this for weeks now, and finally she proves that she can do it, just like her brother!  So everyone in our family can do it now! 😀

Several weeks ago, Ethan’s school planned a class field trip to visit two heritage buildings/sites in Penang.  And since I myself have not visited those places before, I asked for permission from his teacher for me to tag along, with the primary reason of snapping some pictures 🙂

The two places that the class visited was the Cheong Fatt Tze mansion on Leith Street, and Chew Jetty at Weld Quay.

The kids were ferried around in a bus while I drove to the sites on my own.  Apparently, a few other mothers were tagging along that day too, some for reasons unknown to me.

Photography was not allowed in the mansion itself, so I could only take a few outside before we went in…well actually, I did snap some pictures inside, but with my iPhone (read: quiet and small) 🙂

The image of the stately blue mansion against the beautiful blue sky that day was breathtaking.  It was my first time there, even though I had been staying in Penang for more than 10 years now.

…and no…I am not obsessed with taking pictures of trishaws 😛

A peek into the living room where all the kids were being given an introductory explanation by the tour guide, Aunty Pauline, before the start of the tour of the mansion:

More amazing architecture from within the mansion’s walls:

After the mansion tour: a handful of the kids posing for a group photo…they actually look very hungry, don’t they?

Well, I suppose the kids had their snacks on the bus on the way to the next stop, Chew Jetty, because when they arrived, they were all full of energy!

Sweet lil’ Hannah turns THREE today, and she’s mighty excited about it 🙂

My little princess finally decided that she wanted a Dora birthday cake for her celebration in school, and since Daddy will not be around on her actual birthday date, we decided to have the school celebration a week earlier, i.e. last week.

“Mommy, I want ALL my friends to sing Happy Birthday to me,…then I will blow the candle!”

Yes, she had been waiting for it for a long time. 🙂

Those of you who follow me on Facebook would have seen the initial sneak preview of the Dora figurine that was supposed to sit on top of the cake, but I’ll have to tell you that the finished product shown here was my second figurine…errr…for reasons which I will reveal at a later time.

But anyhow, here’s the cake…with Dora and Boots looking a little too chubby than they were originally meant to be (because of the fondant spreading out).  The cake itself is a moist chocolate cake with chocolate ganache frosting in between.  Heavenly yums.

hannah-bday2

As long as the *customer* is happy, I am also happy 🙂

hannah-bday3

In order to be fair, I also made personalized chewy sugar cookies for Hannah’s birthday celebration party packs.  In line with the Dora theme, I made the cookies in the shape of stars, and used colorful royal icing on top to make it bright and interesting.  Each star was then labelled with a child’s name 🙂

Those 2 on the small white plate were decorated by Ethan and Hannah…because I made extra.

Almost done…

…and packed into pretty party packs, helped by my 2 cute assistants…

hannah-bday9

Pink baggies for the girls and blue ones for the boys…couldn’t get Diego jigsaw puzzles so everyone got a Dora one. LOL

hannah-bday10

I had to make 2 trips carrying the party packs and my camera to the car first and then followed by the cake.

Developmental Milestones

  • Getting more and more talkative by the day.  She would report to me who came to school and who did not, who is sick and who is not sick anymore because he/she came back to school today.  She would tell me whom she played hide-and-seek with in school, etc.  She’ll tell me the names of her friends and will tell me the name of Ethan’s friends too!  She’ll tell me who cried in school, who did not…and what her teacher did.
  • Hannah is also picking up some Chinese songs in school, because of the bi-lingual medium of instruction used.  And her songs ALWAYS come with actions 🙂
  • She’s very expressive too. “Mommy, mmmm….you smell good!!”
  • Without my realizing it, Hannah has started picking up how to form letters.  She proudly showed me she could write H, A and N a few days ago, and she would willingly write her name.  Well, sometimes the N is written the wrong way, but you’d have to agree with me it’s a good attempt! ..And all this without me even prodding or training her!

  • Recently learnt how to play on a tire swing!

hannah-35-4

hannah-35-5

  • Like her brother, Hannah loves for people to read stories to her.  She would select her own book of choice and ask you to read to her.

Toilet Training

Hannah’s toilet training has been getting better and better every day.  Sometimes I don’t even let her wear pull-ups, and she will wear either the cloth trainer pants or her panties.  Her teachers in school do the same and she has had close to zero accidents.

One time, we were out having lunch after school and she said she needed to go peepee.  I told her that there was no toilet around (actually the toilet was very far away), and I told her it’s okay just for this time to go in her pull-ups.  But then she replied, “But I’m not wearing pull-ups Mommy!”

She will tell us she needs to “peepee” or “poopoo” and almost all the time, there will be results 🙂

Food and Feeding

Appetite is good, but the only thing she needs to work on is to eat more greens!

Others

  • I just started her on using shampoo and conditioner recently, because I’d noticed many split ends in her fine hair.  So I changed from her regular Sebamed brand to Buds’, complete with conditioning treatment now.  And her hair smells heavenly!!

On the actual day Ethan turned 6 this year (January 31st), we planned a short celebration in school, as was usually the case.

Ethan had already requested for his specially-made birthday cake months in advance, and he had been very consistent about it; he’d wanted a Lightning McQueen birthday cake.  So, … no two ways about it…I presented him with the cake he wanted.  And he was ecstatic!

ethan-bday1

It was a lengthy process making that cake, but well worth the effort…especially just seeing the joy on Ethan’s face…

However, having a cake for a birthday celebration in school wasn’t the only thing we needed to plan…

There were still the party packs to think of, and this year we wanted to give Ethan’s friends a memento from him, along with some goodies and useful items.

I made yummy sugar cookies, in the shape of cars… in line with the theme of the celebration…

ethan-bday2

…decorated with royal icing in red and black…

…and then, personalized with each child’s name, and individually wrapped 🙂

ethan-bday5

…and then we got these neat little steel pencil holders shaped like tins and packed the sugar cookies, some oatmeal cookies and jelly, and a couple of pencils in them.

This was where my trusty assistant came in, and he worked like clockwork… 🙂

Weight

14 kilos (it was 14.3 kilos at the doc’s on Feb 1st)

Height

About 91 cm

Teeth

19 teeth, or almost there… Right now, she has 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 incisors bottom jaw;  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw;  4 pramolars and 4 more back pramolars are making their appearance slowly but surely.

Developmental Milestones

  • Can go to sleep on her own at times, but still wakes up at night crying sometimes.  She’ll only want Mommy then.  These few nights she has also been screaming a lot at night.  Hopefully it’s just a phase and will end soon.
  • Her favorite position to fall asleep in is with my hand under her body and the other hugging her.  She won’t hesitate to ask “I want someone to hug me”, or she’ll even instruct me to “Sleep straight, Mommy” and then she will position my hands 😛
  • Loves going to school and will proudly tell us all her friends’ names and also that she knows her brothers’ friends’ names.  She’ll also tell us what she did in school, and what she ate in school.  And she’ll boast that she’s a “big girl”.

Toilet Training

Toilet training has seen a vast improvement in the recent weeks.  She wears pull-ups when she is in school, which makes her feel like a “big girl”.  And now she will tell us when she needs to go pee pee.  When we are out, she’ll tell me, “Mommy, I need to go pee pee.  I’m wearing pull-ups so I can go.  I can hold, Mommy.”

I’ve told her that if she can keep her pull-ups dry, I’ll let her wear panties 🙂

Food and Feeding

Very adventurous in her food, and will try almost anything, as long as it’s not *spicy* 😛
