We’re right smack in the middle of the School Winter Break now, and the kids are just enjoying the vacation.  Today, I single-handedly brought both of them grocery shopping and told them that if I was pleased with their behavior at the store, I’d take them out for some snow play.

I kept my promise.

After lunch, the kids were garbed in their snow gear: snow pants, snow boots, hat and mittens and we took a quick stroll to the little playground area in our apartment.  There was a slight breeze, but the kids were kept nice and toasty in their snow attire… and they had so much FUN!

Last Friday evening, we attended the Winter Festival organized by Ethan’s school’s PTO.  It was like a mini carnival, with games, food and activities for the kids.  We were surprised by the turnout despite the freezing cold weather!

The festival was held in the school gym and the school cafeteria, and only Ethan needed a ticket (@$2).  Adults and kids 3 and under enjoyed free admission.

Ethan started by playing some basketball in the gym.

Unfortunately, he met with a mishap when he scored a basket in one of his games.  He’d jumped up and down in celebration and accidentally bumped his top incisors on a metal horizontal bar. 🙁

He was bleeding a little, but thankfully the bleeding stopped after a while.  However, he just wasn’t himself the rest of the evening, and it took him some time before he was back to his cheerful self.  Poor boy. 🙁

(At the time of writing, his teeth are okay.  He was feeling a little bit of sensitivity for a couple of days after the incident, but he’s okay now.)

I had also volunteered to bring in a cake for the Cake Walk.  Here’s a glimpse of some of the other cakes brought in by other volunteers.

The Cake Walk is a fun game open to all kids at $1 per dance.  All the participants will start dancing when the music is played and when the music stops, every one chooses a number to stand on.  A number will then be drawn from a can and the kid whose number is called will get to choose a cake of his/her choice!  The rest of the kids will win a consolation prize of a lollipop each.

Hannah wanted a go at the Cake Walk:

…but then she got upset when someone stood on the number she wanted to choose…in the end, she won a lollipop anyway.

And then, just before we left for home, the kids wanted to get their faces painted.

Meet Batman…or Batboy… 🙂

…and say hello to Little Miss Cheetah!

By the way, if you’re wondering what I used to wash the face paint off, I started with damp hands and then lathering up some shower gel and then applying it all over the face, gently massaging the face as I went along.  I rinsed off with some warm water, but only about 75% was rinsed off.  After drying the face, I used regular baby lotion with cotton pads and gently wiped off the remaining stains.  About 5% still remained after the first night, so I did the moisturizer thingy again the following day and managed to remove everything.

It has been slightly more than a week since we arrived in Massachusetts, and I’m pleased to note that the worst of jet lags has been over and done with.  In the first couple of days, both kids were “operating” at odd hours; i.e. when one slept, the other was wide awake and vice versa.  This had resulted in very tiring days, but now they are more or less accustomed to the time zones, and wake up at appropriate times in the mornings, with no afternoon naps and sleep at about 9p.m. or 10p.m. each night.  Trying to get them to sleep earlier though.

However, since our shipment from Malaysia has not arrived because we have not moved into our permanent apartment yet, the kids are mostly entertainment-less in our temporary hotel: no toys, no books.  They only have several Lego blocks we brought along and some McDonald’s toys to occupy themselves with.

I could tell they were bored.

So one of the mornings, when it was nice and warm, I decided to take them leaf-hunting, for a simple project I had in mind.  It was the tail-end of Fall and the beginning of the cold winter season.

We picked some pretty leaves in golden, red and yellow hues…

The plan was to pick 2-3 leaves each, but we ended up with so many!  The pretty leaves were so hard to resist, and the kids had a lot of fun too!

Then I had them write their names on some Christmas cards I had brought along, and also decorate them.

Finally, they added one of the leaves they had collected as a finishing touch, and put it in the envelopes.

Now we just need to find out where the nearest postal office is, or mailbox…so that we can send those cards out! 😀

Last Saturday, I’d planned an informal family photo session with a friend who had so kindly offered her time for us.  Unfortunately there was a last minute change of plans and the session was called off.

However, because we had already told the kids we were going to the beach that morning, Pete and I decided to go ahead with the plan anyway.  Mommy would have to be the photographer du jour then. 😛

Here are some photos of our day of fun in the sun!

Months of intense practising, which started at the end of January this year, and afternoon stayback sessions in school, which had me ferrying him to and from school, and countless times of Ethan telling us, “It’s gonna be a surprise!  I’m not gonna tell you what will happen!” when I asked him specific questions about his role, has culminated in an afternoon of sheer enjoyment when we witnessed our little man perform in his inaugural K2 concert at Dewan Budaya in USM last Sunday.

Unlike most school concerts which had sporadic skits and items performed by the kids, it was the tradition of Ethan’s school to hold a full-fledged concert akin to a school play.  It was a tri-lingual concert, and in the months leading up to the concert day, at times Ethan would be intently practising his lines, be it singing or speaking.  He had speaking lines in Chinese and Bahasa too, and they even had recording sessions for the kids prior to the concert, just like a professional recording studio.

Oh yes, it was a MAJOR affair.  And our Ethan was truly truly excited.

In addition, he was playing a few roles too, as were his classmates; one of his roles was that of the Sultan, whom Princess Scheherazade would tell her stories to, for a thousand and one nights.

Yes, that was the title of their concert this year: Scheherazade – Tales of the Arabian Nights.

Unlike last year when Ethan only had one dance scene in his school annual concert, since he was in K1 at that time; this year, as he is in K2, he had speaking, singing and dancing roles.

Here are a few photos taken during the concert.  Photography and videography were prohibited during the concert proper, in order to ensure a smooth production without any disruption, so some of my photos were nicked from the official photographer’s stash 🙂

It’s Finally Showtime!!

Here’s Ethan playing the role as the Sultan…love the elaborate costumes and headgear!

Now who doesn’t like Legos?  Kids and adults alike, at whatever age, love to play with Legos, and I honestly believe that a set of Legos is the best toy any kid can own.  It helps to stimulate creative minds and is never rigid, given its endless building opportunities.  What’s more, Legos are never gender-specific.

So Ethan and Hannah was ecstatic when Daddy returned home from US several weeks ago with a Lego set each for each of them.  Ethan has been “upgraded” to the smaller and more intricate Legos whilst Hannah got the Lego Duplo set.  And oh, both sets were equally fascinating!

In just less than a day, Ethan managed to finished constructing this house…complete with a drink shack and a Lego man holding a cup!

Hannah had her fun with her Cinderella and Prince Charming’s castle, complete with beautiful turrets, blankets and a dining table set!

Ethan took it a few steps further a few days later by building a more advanced version of a Lego house!  “Construction” was delayed for a few days because two of the small Lego pieces got stuck fast together and I had to google and figure out the best way to tear them apart. 🙂

Here’s the final product…sans the palm tree though: A beautiful 2-storey beach house!  Great work, Ethan!

It even includes a sun roof/air well that can be opened and closed as preferred.

Don’t you just LOVE the detailing on these Lego sets?

Here’s looking forward to more Lego creations from my little miracles! 🙂

Ethan was telling me about his playground sessions in school.

Ethan: Mommy, today we went to the playground again.
Me: You did? What did you play today?
Ethan: Oh the same thing…Dragons!
Me: Did you play only with the boys or both boys and girls?
Ethan: Only with the boys, Mommy.
Me: Oh why?
Ethan: Oh because the girls don’t like playing Dragons.  The girls wanna play *PRINCESS*. (He did the high pitch kinda tone when he said the word *PRINCESS*)
Me: (laughing) Oh really?  But don’t some of the boys act as Princes to save the Princess from the Dragon?
Ethan: Nooooooo….all the boys are DRAGONS.  And we chase all the princesses away!

You know how we always say that people take things for granted just because some things are considered easily accessible to them?  For example, Ipoh people don’t really fancy pomelos that much and Klang Valley residents don’t dig Ikea and all that jazz?

Well, we’re just as guilty.. 😛 and I will tell you why.

Despite living in Penang for so many years now, we have NEVER taken the kids on a ferry ride.  The bridge has always been the easier and more convenient option for us.  However, during the past school holidays, since we had not planned on travelling anywhere, we decided to take the kids for an adventure on the ferry.

They were excited to say the least, and kept asking us when we were gonna reach the ferry terminal.  We had a few errands to run before that, you see…

The queue to board the ferry wasn’t long so we were relieved, but you know kids, they get really impatient…

“When are we getting on the ferry, Daddy?”

“Hey Daddy, why are those motorbikes cutting queue?”

“Why is the ferry not here yet?”

“I wonder how many vehicles can go on the ferry?!”

Finally, after about 10-15 minutes of waiting, we boarded the ferry.  The kids were super excited!

Here are a few shots I managed to take while ensuring the kids stayed safe while catching a glimpse of the sea.  Pete had to stay in his car, because for some reason, his car alarm would sound as the ferry rocked to and fro.

It was a fun trip for us all.  We drove to Sunway Carnival Mall and had our dinner there before heading for home…this time, we used the bridge 😛

A couple of weeks back, Hannah went on another field trip with her class, and this time they made a trip to the Butterfly Farm.  Hannah was naturally excited, although she had already been there before, and although it was a scorching hot day, it was evident that she and her friends had loads of fun!

Recently, Hannah’s class put on a concert event called the Playgroup Event.  It involved the kids from the three playgroup classes in her school, which meant the audience was treated to 2-3 year-olds on stage.

Hannah was very excited about the event, and although she woke up that morning announcing she was “too lazy” and didn’t want to wear sunglasses, she certainly did a 180º turn during the event.

Although it was a weekday morning, Hannah was definitely very happy to see her Daddy able to make it, albeit a little late.  Well, nothing beats watching your little gal sing and dance on stage like this, eh? 🙂

I, for one, definitely enjoyed it!  Great job Hannah!  Doesn’t she look absolutely adorable? 🙂
