creativity1

Ethan goes to a school that uses the “Learning through Play” methodology.  The kids are taught what they need to learn through arts and crafts, projects and simple stories they enjoy.  For example, in a Mathematics lesson, instead of drilling the concept of 1 + 2 = 3, the kids will pretend to buy things in a grocery store, e.g. “If  you buy 1 orange and 2 apples, how many in total do you get?”

In addition the amount of “homework” per se pales in comparison to other schools.  I am totally opposed to the idea of homework, especially at such a young age.  To have kids being drilled every day to complete their “work” is definitely uncalled for, in my opinion.  It brings unnecessary stress to the kids and to parents too.  Ethan only brings home homework once a week; 2 pages of handwriting (1 page of purely letters, lowercase and uppercase; and 1 page of words beginning with the letter of the week), and sometimes, 1 page of Chinese handwriting homework…and even then, I feel this is too much. 😛

Ethan also brings back an English book and a Chinese book each week, as a move to inculcate the love of reading from young.  I applaud this move and feel that it is very useful as Ethan looks forward to reading it every week.

One of the aspects his school has been encouraging the kids on is in honing their creativity and storytelling skills, which I am truly happy with.  I’m impressed and am very pleased to see the progress Ethan has attained in this field.

When he was in Nursery, the kids were initially asked to draw what they thought or felt.  This gave the kids the freedom to explore their feelings and thoughts.  They were also prompted to express themselves verbally.  For example, in this following picture, Ethan was prompted “Love is…?” and he replied, “My purple bicycle.” “I love….?” and he replied, “The wind, kites and circles.”

creativity2

I found it fascinating that even his thoughts rhymed! 🙂 (never mind that he does not own a purple bicycle!)

In this next creative writing exercise example, the theme was “When I was a baby…”.  The kids were asked to draw what they did as a baby and then narrate to the teacher.

creativity3

Ethan’s picture showed:

  • When I was a baby, I played with baby balls (depicted in top right)
  • When I was a baby, I played with a toy rectangle (bottom left)
  • When I was a baby, I drink breast milk (picture of the breast at the bottom right.. LOL) – I found it heartwarming that even till then, one of his fondest memories as a baby was being breastfed! 🙂

Another example of creative writing and imagination:

creativity4

As time went on and Ethan entered K1, the kids were then encouraged to create and write their own stories using their own ideas.  It may seem very difficult for kids their age, but you’ll be amazed at what stories these kids could come up with!  The kids would then draw out their ideas to illustrate it in a clearer manner.

An example of Ethan’s short story, as dictated:

creativity5

And one of “Creating a Fairytale”:

creativity6

creativity7

Such vivid imagination, don’t you think?

The next step which Ethan is being encouraged on now is creating and writing their own thoughts and stories.  Words are formed by way of trying to sound and blend the phonics of the alphabets together.  Some of the words might be spelled wrongly at first but what is being focused on is the idea that is created and not the spelling of the words.

creativity8

It’s a great start, isn’t it?  And I find that this is certainly better and more interesting that mindless drilling of words and letters and numbers…but that’s just me.

Anyway, Ethan is sharpening his listening and comprehension skills now; the teacher tells a story and the kids are prompted to repeat the story in their own words.  It’s an activity I hope to enforce at home too. 🙂

Apart of creative writing, I’m surprised the school curriculum includes some topics which I’ve either forgotten about or not aware of, like a few weeks ago, when Ethan told me there were FOUR layers in the rainforest: Forest Floor, Understory, Canopy and Emergent.

creativity9

Wow.

See?  We can learn things from kids every day too! 🙂

Weight

12.5 kilos.  (turns out my estimation of her weight had been wrong all this while, because when she went to visit the doctor recently, she was weighed in at 12.5 kilos only)

Height

Around 86cm

Teeth

Turns out I have been wrong all this time.. from the recent dental checkup, the dentist has counted that Hannah has only 15 teeth now (and not 17 teeth, as I’d thought): 4 incisors on the upper jaw,3 incisors bottom jaw.  2 canines upper jaw, 2 canines bottom jaw.  4 pramolars.  4 more back pramolars have not made their appearance.

Motor Skills

  • Likes to pretend she is walking on a balance beam, be it at the side of the bed or on a self-constructed imaginary *beam* made of cards on the floor.
  • Still likes to jump on the trampoline.
  • Attempting to put on shoes by herself (and being rather stubborn about it)
  • Insists on buckling up by herself and shows her *strength* in doing so, by making a “tremendous effort” sound.  Favorite phrase: “Nooooo!!!  I can do myself!  Close the door, Mommy!”
  • Learning about textures and smells by sometimes grabbing hold of food and moulding with bare hands.  Gives me a headache, but I try to laugh it off as a process of learning.  SIGH.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah has started asking WHY.  “Why Ethan go school, Mommy?”  “Why we go home, Mommy?”
Hannah (pointing to a dot on the crook of her elbow): What’s that, Mommy?
Me: Oh, that’s a small dot from yesterday, when the nurse took a blood sample from your arm, remember?
    Hannah: But why Mommy?
Me: So that she can test if you are all right.
    Hannah (makes pitiful face): Painful….

For the record, she did not cry a teeny bit when the blood sample was taken.  So proud of my girl!

  • She can use “Thank you” and “You’re welcome” pretty consistently now.
  • Says “Sorry” readily when she accidentally causes hurt.
  • She loves to hug her blankie to sleep.  It’s a lovely crochet one which was a gift to her when she was a newborn.  She’s had it ever since.
  • Hannah loves to role-play now.  She’ll pretend she’s cooking something for us, or that she’s serving us some food.
  • She adores her soft toys.  One of her current favorites is a little cuddly giraffe she names Isabella (name given by Ethan, but has stuck since).

hannah-isabella

  • Hannah can also be rather stubborn at times and demands her own ways.  We have had to introduce the “naughty stool” to her on a few occasions, and she has been able to apologize soon after that.
  • She can recognize most letters of the alphabet and most numbers now.  If she is not sure, she will ask, “What the that number, Mommy?”
  • Has a favorite color, which changes every day according to the color of her shirt/dress.  However, lately she has been telling me her favorite color is GREEN.  Because “Green means GO, Mommy!” 🙂 (her wonderful teacher Ethan has also taught her that “Red means STOP” and “Orange means Slow Down”)

Toilet Training

  • Hannah is about 85% toilet-trained for pooping now.  She is able to let me know when she needs to go poopoo, and can independently sit on the throne till she is done.

Food and Feeding

  • Still in the process of weaning completely from the breast at night.  There have been a few nights where she managed to fall asleep by herself (while hugging me) and also slept through the night without the need to wake up for a comfort suckle.
  • There are a few non-favorites foods of Hannah’s now, namely spring onions, onions, “brown stuff in food”.
  • One of her current favorites now are fish balls.

puzzleme1

Having a knack of solving puzzles seems to run in the genes, because now Hannah, like her brother Ethan, is beginning to show a keen interest on puzzles.

She especially loves to build words from word puzzle letters and she has sort of “hijacked” this toy from Ethan.  When she was first introduced to it, she needed a lot of help piecing the words together, but now she can more or less form all the words by herself.  She can even recognize a word simply by looking at just one of the letters from the word.  For example, she would grab hold of the letter E and tell us she wants to build the word TREE.  Then she would look for all the remaining letters and piece them together.  Sometimes she would ask for some help by saying, “How this one goes, Mommy?”  But eventually, she would be able to finish forming all the words, arranging them neatly on the floor.

puzzleme2

One quirky behavior is that Hannah would arrange all the animals together in a row, and then all the rest of the words in another area on the floor.  It’s as if she can differentiate which are the living things and which are the inanimate objects.  All with the exception of the word BUG.  We’re guessing she does not know that a BUG is an insect, which is a living thing.

And while arranging the word puzzle pieces, she would say to herself, ” This one goes here…this one goes here…ta-daaa!!!”

puzzleme3

Another puzzle that she has been into lately is what she calls her “princess puzzle”.  It’s a jigsaw puzzle  and granted, it is quite a tough puzzle to piece together for a 2-year old, but repeated practice has resulted in her being able to piece together almost the entire puzzle.  But because the pieces are quite small, some of them have chipped off.

puzzleme4

Despite that, Hannah is still able to guess and place the pieces correctly in position.  Sometimes she would even correct me when I accidentally place them in the wrong place!

And here’s the finished result:

dentalcheck1

We took both Ethan and Hannah to see the dentist for their twice-a-year checkup yesterday. Well, for Ethan, it was his 2nd time with this dentist, but for Hannah, it’s her first time ever going for a dental checkup.

While waiting for their turn, the kids were fascinated by the door sensor that went “Ding Dong” every time they’d go near it.  The waiting area was pretty spacious, which allowed them to roam around.  SIGH.  They obviously ignored our reminders to “keep it down!” 😛

dentalcheck2

I took both kids into the treatment room, because I wanted Hannah to observe Ethan having his checkup first.  The dentist remarked that Ethan’s teeth were absolutely clean and told him to keep up the good work.  Our boy was beaming from ear to ear! 🙂

Then came Hannah’s turn.  She willingly got into the patient’s chair and did not wriggle or scream when the dentist ask her to open her mouth to check.  Such is the power of sibling influence 🙂 and I was very impressed by her courage at such a young age.

dentalcheck3

Unfortunately though, the dentist detected a small cavity in Hannah’s 2nd upper right incisor, which she said had penetrated the dentin layer (not sure why Hannah had not complained of pain).  Anyway, the dentist did a composite filling for Hannah using slow frequency equipment that would not be so *scary* and loud for a two-year-old.

And Hannah did GREAT.  I’m so proud of her.  She laid very still as I held her hand and the filling was done in less than 5 minutes.  No wailings, no screaming and no tears.

I told Hannah she had to let Daddy or Mommy brush her teeth from now on (or at least take turns with her, i.e. “First Mommy will brush your teeth…and now it’s Hannah’s turn!”).  Sometimes she would insist on brushing her teeth herself, which could be the reason why she had a cavity in the first place.  Well hopefully, in 6 months’ time when they go for their dental checkup again, the dentist will give an “all clear” report! 🙂

chopsticks1

Doesn’t Ethan look like a pro using his pair of training chopsticks?  They were a gift from Pauline Kor Kor a couple of years ago (when Ethan was way too small for chopsticks), but look at my little big boy now…

chopsticks2

He is not really a fan of noodles or beehoon, but just last week, I just asked him for fun if he wanted rice or beehoon for lunch.  Surprisingly, Ethan said he wanted beehoon soup, so that’s what I served him! 🙂

chopsticks4

Add a pair of chopsticks to the equation and you have a happy camper of a toddler 🙂

Weight

Possibly 13 kilos.

Height

Around 85cm

Teeth

17 teeth: 4 incisors on the upper jaw, 3 or 4 incisors bottom jaw.  2 canines upper jaw, 1 or 2 canines bottom jaw.  6 pramolars: if I’ve counted correctly, it’s 4 on the upper jaw and 2 on the bottom jaw (with 2 more appearing slowly).

Motor Skills

  • Likes to skip
  • Likes to jump on the trampoline.
  • Can be more or less independent on playground play structures and shows no fear sliding down slides, even those tunnel-slides.
  • Attempting to work the hula hoop.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah’s getting into the hang of asking questions now, but she phrases it rather uniquely when she uses “What”.  She’ll say, “What the that smell, Mommy?” or “What the that animal, Daddy?” or “What the that color, Ethan?”.  We’ll then simply rephrase it for her, by asking her, “Oh, what’s that smell? That’s the smell of durians!”
  • She can sing many many songs, her most recent accomplishment is singing the popular A-B-C song.  Last night, I asked her if it’s okay that I record her singing it and she agreed.  Let’s see when I can get a recording to post here. 🙂
  • Tantrums are also getting regular.  Like any two-year-old, she wants to assert herself and test her limits.
  • Hannah is currently being trained to use “Please”, “Thank you” and “Excuse Me”.  Her brother is a very good teacher 🙂
  • She can count by rote from 1-39.  According to “Teacher Ethan”, Hannah will say “30” after she counts 39!

Food and Feeding

  • Hannah is weaned off the breast during the daytime.  She still needs to be breastfed to sleep though, but now in the middle of the night, she can sometimes be soothed to sleep without the breast.  We use the “hug method” or sometimes the “snuggle next to Daddy method”, the latter of which is not very popular with Daddy. 😛
  • She is very curious when it comes to food and wants to see whatever we are eating/drinking and wants to try it, if possible.
  • She likes to take cookies, tau sar pneah and her favorite ice cream flavor is “chocolate”, so she tells everyone.

Kit “May Part 1” at DMS from Nanine & Mélie.Designs

Weight

12 point something kilos, maybe close to 13 kilos even.

Height

Around 83cm

Teeth

Well, well…she finally cooperated and opened up her mouth long enough for me to count her teeth, and whaddya know?  Our little Hannah has 17 teeth now!  Yep…it’s an ODD number.  She seems to be missing her bottom left canine/incisor though.  Will take her to the dentist next month for a checkup.

Motor Skills

  • She is more or less comfortable with her movements now, and can do most of the things her brother does.  She runs a lot though.
  • Hannah loves dancing and will move her body to the music when she hears it.
  • Hannah can feed herself rather well, with either a spoon or a fork.  Of course, there will be some mess when she self-feeds, but it’s part and parcel of learning.
  • Loves to reach and touch the buttons on the elevator.  She can only reach the bottom-most row though, so she can only press G.  But she will still proclaim, as proud as can be, “See? I press G!”

Communication and Social Skills

  • Hannah’s competitive streak is beginning to surface.  For example, when a song starts playing, and someone else sings, she’ scream, “Noooo!!! Hannah SING!”  Thank goodness her brother is matured enough to say, “Never mind Hannah, we sing it together, alright?”
  • Hannah is becoming curioser and curioser.  She loves to ask, “What are you doing, Mommy?” or “Where are we going now, Daddy?” and when we answer her, she’ll reply with a knowing, “Ohhh…” Or when we tell her what we are doing, she’ll request, “Let me see…”
  • She can also express her likes for certain things. For instance, when she hears a song she likes, she will say, “I like this song.  What’s this song?” or when she eats something she likes, she’ll say, “Mmmm…nice.  I like this one.”
  • When she does something wrong, or when she accidentally physically hurts me, and I wince in pain, she’ll say, “Sorry Mommy.”  She gets this empathic trait from her brother 🙂
  • Loves to *socialize*.  When someone is on the phone, she’ll run along and ask, “Say Hello?” and then she’ll say, “Hello Aunty!” or whatever into the receiver.  That’s right.  She’s not shy at all, this girl.

Food and Feeding

  • Hannah is weaned off the breast during the daytime.  She will only ask to be breastfed after I have taken my bath at night and when she is ready for bed.  I’ll work on weaning her off her night feeds soon.  Just don’t ask me when.
  • She is able to feed herself with a spoon or fork.
  • She can drink quite independently with a regular cup or with a straw.
  • She is very open to trying new foods, and can eat quite quickly too.  Her current favorites are carrots (boiled in soup) and tuna sandwich.

hannah-numbers

Last Sunday, we were all hanging out in our home, and Pete was playing with the kids.  He was holding a numbered flash card and he asked Hannah if she wanted the card.  Hannah was going about her *work*, moving blocks and stacking toys, walking around here and there, seemingly ignoring her Daddy.

Pete asked a few times if she wanted the card, but she didn’t respond.  He asked, “Hannah, do you want this?” and “Come Hannah, Daddy will give this card to you…”

Then all of a sudden, Hannah ran towards her Daddy, swiped the card from his hand and said, “I dowan FOUR!”

Pete was dumbfounded, because he was indeed holding the card with the number 4 on it.

You see, up till then, we hadn’t realized that Hannah could recognize numbers.  We only know that she could count 1-10 by rote.

Pleasantly surprised, we tested her newfound skill further by holding up a few other numbered cards, and she could tell us most of the numbers 1-9.  Sometimes she would confuse 9 and 7 because of their similar shapes, but it’s a great start.  Of course, Ethan tried to get Hannah to say the numbers 11-20 too.. LOL

The wonderful thing is that we didn’t even teach her how to say those numbers, because we don’t believe in forcing a young toddler to learn numbers or alphabets.  She just picked it up on her own, probably through observation. 🙂 … or probably it’s just in her genes. 😛 … or perhaps because she is a breastfed baby! 🙂

Kit “Child Love” at DMS from Lilas
Color Felt Stitching Alphas from Jada Collectibles

Weight

12.3 kilos as weighed in at doc’s about 4 weeks ago.

Height

Around 83cm

Teeth

She still wouldn’t open up her mouth long enough for me to count accurately, but from what I could see/estimate, Hannah now has 16 teeth: 8 incisors (4 top and 4 bottom), with 4 pramolars appearing on the right side (top and bottom) and left side (top and bottom); also 2 canines starting to appear at the top jaw, and 2 canines on the bottom jaw.  Her 4 other pramolars might have already started growing, but as mentioned, she wouldn’t open up wide enough for me to see.

Motor Skills

  • Hannah is a handful when we dine out.  She will sit and eat when she is hungry, but she she is full and restless, she’ll announce, “I’m full.  I wanna walk.”  And then attempt to climb out of her high chair.
  • She can put on her sandals by herself (bravo Hannah!), although sometimes it is on the wrong side.
  • Hopping and jumping skills have improved.  She can also manage jumping on the trampoline!  Since March, I’ve started taking her to the parent-toddler class once a week, and it has certainly helped to hone her social skills, as well as her motor and creativity skills.  She looks forward to each session and cheerfully participates in all the activities, especially the music and movement ones.

Communication and Social Skills

  • Beginning to show more and more of a stubborn personality, no thanks to genes from both Mommy and Daddy.  Uses the words “No!” and “No want!” (don’t want) when she wants to tell us what she wants.  But she also uses “Yeah” and “Yes”, so it’s a healthy balance.
  • Can carry on simple conversations with Ethan.  It’s really enlightening to see them communicate.  Of course, they also fight sometimes, but that’s a whole other story.
  • Hannah’s vocabulary continues to increase exponentially as she mimics and parrots almost everything Ethan says (especially).  Interesting words and phrases she says are, “Mother Goose!”, “Queensbay Mall!”, “Gurney Plaza!”, “Fatty Loh!” and “I no-no” (I dunno).
  • Some of her pronunciation is not that clear and accurate yet, but it’s good enough for us to understand what she means.
  • Hannah is also polishing up on her manipulation skills.  Sometimes when we want to lead her away from something, and we hold her hand and guide her away, she will scream at the top of her lungs and say, “Uhhh….my HAND!!!”, as though we are hurting her!

Food and Feeding

  • Hannah is more or less weaned off the breast during the daytime.  She will only ask to be breastfed after I have taken my bath at night and when she is ready for bed.
  • She is able to feed herself rice, porridge or pasta with a spoon, and is able to use her fingers to eat breads and buns.
  • She can drink quite independently with a regular cup or with a straw.
  • Loves oranges and papayas, and all kinds of soup.
  • Loves experimenting on new foods.  Once, she saw a small bowl of chilli on the table while we were having dinner, and asked for some.  Hannah said, “Try some, please?”, while pointing to the chilli.  “No, baby,” I said, “That’s spicy.  Maybe next time when you’re older, okay?”  She looked at me and said, “Drink water…” (meaning if it’s spicy, she can always drink water)

Potty Training

  • Potty training is still ongoing, and I am not really pushing her.  She understands that poopoo should go into the toilet and she says things like “Icky!” when she poopoos.
  • She likes to *pretend* to wipe herself clean, but insists that I wash her butt with water after every poopoo.

rio

Last Friday, on a whim, we decided to take BOTH kids to watch Rio.  We knew Ethan could sit through the entire movie, but for Hannah, it was a first.  True, she was only 2, but at home, she had displayed tremendous concentration when she watches videos and TV, we figured why not try it?  The worst that could happen was if she made a fuss, I would just take her out of the cinema.

We used one of those free child movie passes that came with a Happy Meal purchase.  We had to buy 2 adult movie tickets though, to get the free child movie pass, and it was only valid at TGV.  The only TGV in Penang is at 1st Avenue, so it was a first time watching a movie there for all of us too.  Hannah did not need a ticket, so she just sat on my lap.

rio1

The kids went wild with excitement and waited eagerly for our cinema number to flash, so that we could go in.

rio2

Inside the cinema, Hannah was kept busy eating popcorn, so she was very well behaved for about 45 minutes or so.  Once the popcorn was exhausted, she started playing with my mineral water, and fidgeting in her seat.  Note to self: in future, make sure the popcorn lasts the entire movie. 😛

She began to wander up and down the aisles and wanted to try out the couple seats at the back row, the other seats beside us as well as the stairs.  The suddenly she wanted to go potty (for a big one).  So I had to take her out to the toilet.  Thankfully the toilet was very clean, and just a few steps away from our cinema 🙂

When we got back, Hannah was still restless.  Good thing though, that the cinema was very empty that day.  She snuggled up and tried to get some shuteye, but couldn’t.  In the end, we managed to sit through the entire movie, without too much of a fuss.

Would we do it again?  Sure, if it’s a suitable movie, and this time, I’ll make sure there’s plenty of popcorn to go round!

Oh, and I’m still perplexed as to why Rio has already been released in Malaysia, whereas the release date in US is only on April 15th!  Ethan LOVES the show though…when he wanted to go toilet somewhere near the end, he said, “Mommy I need to go to the toilet.  Can you please pause the show?”

Haha…yeah, we’re currently on a collecting spree for all the Rio toys from McDonald’s…(see first picture at the top)
